In short (whole book)

War and dungeon danger close around Liscor from different directions. Laken Godart uses trebuchets against Rags's Flooded Waters tribe, but deception turns a possible truce into battle and leaves the surviving Goblins scattered and pursued. At the Wandering Inn, Erin supports adventurers entering Liscor's dungeon and protects Goblins despite mounting hostility. Gnoll-like captors abduct Mrsha, Ceria, and other Gnolls under Calruz, the missing former captain of the Horns of Hammerad. After repeated rescue attempts fail, Mrsha helps the prisoners escape and Erin uses her magical door to place a combined city, adventurer, Antinium, and Goblin force inside the enemy camp. Mrsha and Ceria are saved, the Horns defeat Calruz, and he is imprisoned for trial. Erin publicly credits the Goblins whose help made the victory possible, while the dungeon, northern war, anti-Goblin conflict, and an academy investigation of Liscor remain unresolved.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Erin established the Wandering Inn outside Liscor as a meeting place for people who rarely trust one another. She protected five Redfang Goblins, employed individual Antinium, and cared for Mrsha with Lyonette. The inn's magical door connected distant places and made Erin increasingly important to Liscor. The Horns of Hammerad survived a disastrous dungeon expedition but lost their captain, Calruz, and remained marked by the experience. Ceria now leads the team with Pisces, Yvlon Byres, and Ksmvr. Liscor's newly discovered Gold-rank dungeon still contains unknown routes and powerful monsters. Farther north, the blind emperor Laken Godart built the Unseen Empire at River Farm with Durene, while Rags led the Flooded Waters Goblins and tried to preserve her tribe. Rhys, the Goblin Lord blamed for Zel Shivertail's death, continued his campaign with an undead-backed army. These separate conflicts leave Liscor, its dungeon, and the northern Goblin war poised to converge.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Laken demonstrates working trebuchets and courts northern nobles while considering Magnolia Reinhart's offer to recognize and support his realm if he withholds the weapons from everyone else for four months. He also sends Wiscaria against thousands of Goblins entering his territory. Her surprise attack inflicts severe losses and leaves Rags unconscious, but Pyrite preserves the tribe until she recovers. Rags captures a city, disperses Redfang raiders across the countryside, and turns the pursuit into a wider war. Lady Bethel, released without ransom after witnessing the Goblins mourn, no longer views them as a simple enemy. At the inn, Lyonette takes greater responsibility for Mrsha, Apista, staffing, and security. She loses her Princess class and grieves despite claiming it no longer matters. Pawn's attempt to pray the class back violates her wishes and causes a rupture between them. After learning that his feelings may be romantic, he creates a dance for Lyonette and his Antinium. She teaches him to waltz, the Workers and Soldiers find a shared recreation, and her classes consolidate into Worldly Princess. Lyonette and Pawn reconcile and agree to explore their uncertain feelings together.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

Erin commits the inn to helping adventurers prepare for Liscor's dungeon and offers a reward for reliable news of Calruz. Ceria, Pisces, Yvlon Byres, and Ksmvr decide that the Horns of Hammerad must return and find him. Several expeditions enter by different routes. A vast shield-spider nest erupts, but the Gold-rank teams contain its known shaft while survivors flood deeper passages. Ksmvr diverts one swarm and saves two adventuring teams. The Horns then discover a fortified Antinium route. Pisces deliberately encourages outside suspicion about the Hive so more forces will be drawn to the dungeon. In the north, Garen Redfang and Tremborag reject Rhys's demand for submission and fail to ambush him. Rhys besieges Tremborag's mountain while Laken surrounds the city held by Rags. The Flooded Waters tribe learns that destroying marker-totems blinds Laken's awareness and rapidly copies his trebuchets. Rags offers withdrawal and a truth-tested truce, but forged magical orders launch the human assault before Laken can halt it. He rejects her renewed appeal, and an arriving human lord saves him from a counterattack. At the mountain, the appearance of the feared Kingslayer sends both Goblin armies fleeing. Laken agrees to discuss an alliance with the newly arrived lord.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

The Free Queen reconnects with the wider Antinium leadership and is ordered to pursue dungeon artifacts at any cost. She initially sees Bird's independence as a defect, but his songs persuade her that he is a valuable individual. Bird returns to the inn with her conditional approval and later gains a Singer class. Elsewhere, Black Mage escapes the control of one academy faction long enough to bargain access to a hidden magical study for Revivalist protection. The rival faction responds by directing investigators toward Erin, her magical door, Pisces, and the Horns. At Liscor, intelligent furred dungeon captors raid both the city and the inn, using enslaved Cave Goblins and abducting Gnolls. The defenders kill several attackers, but two escape. Yvlon's metal-fused arm is badly broken, and she knowingly permits Pisces to reinforce both arms with living bone. A surviving Cave Goblin explains that the captors keep deep mobile camps, control her people, and specifically seek Gnolls. Ilvriss funds large recovery bounties, and Pallas sends more than one hundred adventurers. The first mass expedition finds no camp, but Ceria's trail marker reaches Calruz. He is alive inside the dungeon and turns away from the offered route out.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Liscor fortifies the inn and launches repeated dungeon searches. Erin prevents the Redfang Hobgoblins from killing a captured Cave Goblin and instead begins treating the prisoners as potential allies. During a night attack, the inn's defenders defeat a limited assault, but Erin and Zevara recognize it as a diversion. Calruz has united the furred captors, seized Ceria, and is holding Mrsha with dozens of Gnolls. He is unstable, demands Ceria's obedience, and uses threatened executions to control her. A blood ritual kills a captive Gnoll and transforms one captor into a stronger, fully reasoning leader. Ceria submits outwardly and sends Pisces a coded warning. Ksmvr asks the Hive for help and is defeated by Klbkch when he challenges the refusal, though Klbkch privately makes the captives an objective of a large Antinium incursion. Adventurers, Antinium, Bird, and Redfang Goblins enter the dungeon through separate routes. The Horns defy orders to stay behind, but Pisces exhausts himself sustaining bone constructs and the rescue force is worn down by traps and monsters. Bird is found alive with a crushed leg. The rescuers withdraw without Ceria or Mrsha, leaving the hidden camp intact.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Erin establishes a hidden Cave Goblin refuge and sends the five Redfang Hobgoblins through its dungeon entrance with new equipment. They discover that dungeon water prevents many inhabitants from seeing one another. The Redfangs destroy a captor outpost, free its enslaved Goblins, and learn where the main prisoner camp lies. Calruz explains that he survived the Horns' failed expedition, killed the captors' former chieftain, and took command. He uses their forces to conquer dungeon territory and raid the surface for Gnolls. A Gold-rank rescue attempt fails, costs an adventurer's life, and prompts the ritual killing of twenty more prisoners. The newly intelligent captors begin forming a faction against Calruz, while he abuses Ceria and suspects betrayal. Ceria turns his fear of a coup against them and wins a pause in the sacrifices. Mrsha finds Ceria's wand, grows grass through the prisoners' restraints, and frees twenty-seven Gnolls. She then deliberately draws a powerful dungeon guardian to the camp. Its paralyzing presence creates an opening for the captives to flee, and an elder Gnoll escapes with Mrsha. Ceria and Calruz remain behind amid the struggle, while the fugitives are pursued through the dungeon.

Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)

Mrsha draws the pursuers away from the escaped Gnolls and Redfang Goblins, sacrificing her own chance to leave. The other Gnolls reach the inn, where Erin prepares a final rescue. Inside the camp, Ceria and Calruz maintain a temporary alliance against the newly intelligent faction, whose leader wants Mrsha killed for power. Erin persuades Liscor's leaders to use her magical door for a coordinated assault. A Cave Goblin secretly builds a crude doorway inside the camp and activates it with a mana stone, allowing adventurers, Watch members, soldiers, Antinium, and Goblins to attack from several directions. The combined force breaks the captors despite serious losses. Lyonette, Apista, and a half-Giant defender stop the enemy leader from escaping with Mrsha, and Mrsha is returned safely through the door. Ceria reunites with Pisces, Yvlon Byres, and Ksmvr. Together, the Horns of Hammerad defeat Calruz when he chooses to fight them. Ceria accepts his surrender, and he is taken wounded to Liscor's prison for trial. Ceria, Mrsha, and the surviving Gnoll prisoners are safe, though scattered enemies remain in the dungeon. Erin reaches level 36 as a Magical Innkeeper, gains a natural alliance with Goblins, and has her inn recognized as a Liscor landmark. She publicly credits the Cave Goblins and Redfang Hobgoblins for making the rescue possible.

How does it end? (ending)

Erin's door-based plan opens several attack routes directly into the dungeon camp. Liscor's Watch, soldiers, Antinium, adventurers, and Goblin allies overwhelm the captors, though the assault causes serious casualties. Mrsha is recovered alive, Ceria reunites with the Horns, and the surviving Gnoll prisoners are freed. Ceria, Pisces, Yvlon Byres, and Ksmvr defeat Calruz together. Ceria accepts his surrender, and he is wounded, imprisoned in Liscor, and left to face trial. Some enemy survivors remain elsewhere in the dungeon. Erin reaches level 36 as a Magical Innkeeper, gains a stronger bond with Goblins, and has the inn recognized as a Liscor landmark. She publicly identifies the Cave Goblins and Redfang Hobgoblins as essential to the rescue. The Horns are functioning as a team again, but Calruz's trial and their future in the dungeon remain open. Liscor still faces the dungeon's deeper guardians, political conflict over Goblins and Antinium access, and possible academy agents seeking Erin's door. In the north, Rags and her dispersed tribe remain hunted, while Rhys, Garen Redfang, and Tremborag survive the larger human campaign.
