The eighth Undying Mercenaries novel finds James McGill's home life interrupted when Legion Varus is unexpectedly recalled for an undisclosed and clearly dangerous assignment. McGill is placed in a six-person group with fellow veterans and sent into Central's deep vaults for what Primus Graves calls an experiment, where a series of merciless survival trials cost the team several members their lives before the truth emerges: the vault ordeals are a covert contest to select an elite delegation. As Group 9 advances through the trials, McGill and the survivors learn the winning team will be sent to represent Earth on a mission to appease an unidentified and dangerous alien power on the frontier.
