Blood World recap

Legion Varus is sent to win the allegiance of Blood World, whose engineered armies could strengthen Earth for an approaching frontier war. Shipboard sabotage, concealed gateways, and lethal contests reveal competing schemes within the expedition. Claver murders Tribune Deitch, frames James McGill, and later impersonates Winslade while trying to divert the prize to the Regalians. McGill exposes the disguise, helps Graves restore control, and publicly kills Legion Germanica's tribune in a duel that gives Earth the victory. Blood World makes McGill Geetha's consort and commander of its army, but he accidentally returns through a gateway to Earth. Geetha bars him from returning while still supplying troops. Drusus demobilizes him, and Claver warns before his death that the failed bargain leaves Earth facing war over Imperial province 929.

Previously: James McGill is a veteran officer of Legion Varus whose repeated revivals and unorthodox field decisions have made him useful to Earth and troublesome to its commanders. His history includes concealed dealings with powerful Galactic figures, a prior invasion involving Claver, and the death of Inspector Xlur under circumstances that McGill and Galina Turov helped suppress. McGill's family remains in Georgia, including his outspoken daughter Etta. Earth survives under Galactic authority but faces continuing danger on a remote frontier, while McGill's relationships with Varus personnel and senior command carry old loyalties, suspicions, and personal complications into the new mobilization.

So far this book: Etta tells McGill that she intends to join the legions, but he sees both her ambition and her anti-Galactic opinions as dangerous. Primus Graves then recalls McGill for an undisclosed mission. At Central, McGill joins Winslade, Kivi, Carlos, Sargon, and Harris in Group 9. Their first trial traps them with a lethal jugger. Winslade, Sargon, and Carlos die before McGill's improvised snare kills the creature, though all three later return by revival. Galina Turov reveals that the survivors are competing to become Earth's alien-facing delegation under Inspector Xlur's supervision. Group 9 defeats Legion Germanica in a pit fight and becomes the chosen team, although the purpose and destination of the mission remain undisclosed.

Turov explains that Earth needs a frontier coalition as Galactic military support withdraws. The target society respects martial strength, and its population consists of engineered soldier castes created through coerced techsmith work. Claver joins the expedition despite McGill's distrust. During the long voyage, the Legion Varus transport is violently forced out of warp and its drive fails. A boarding attack by giant clones is revealed as a planned test of the legion's ability to fight without direction from its senior officers. McGill's decision to avoid the expected route reduces his unit's losses and helps Varus pass the test. The warp failure was not part of the exercise, however, leaving the stranded expedition with evidence of a separate and unexplained threat.

Small engineered saboteurs seize engineering, kill McGill and Natasha, and repel a counterattack. The revived McGill learns that the expedition's techsmith researcher helped create these beings under coercion. Negotiations collapse, damaging his relationship with her, while the intruders retain control of the drive. McGill proposes capturing their nearby assault ship as leverage. His boarding party suffers heavy turret fire but breaches the vessel, finds its bridge, and secures it moments before Varus would have destroyed it. The captured craft offers only a limited escape route and yields no prisoners, so the main transport remains trapped with too many people to evacuate. McGill therefore prepares a dangerous assault to recover engineering without destroying the drive.

Varus reaches Blood World after sending Natasha home with the captured ship. A local techsmith representative displays a force vastly larger than the legion and requires the visitors to compete in the Pit, where each contest ends only when one side is dead. McGill volunteers for the first trial. Alone in a desert crater, he survives explosive drones, identifies a small concealed opponent, and kills it with a trap. His victory establishes the lethal terms of Blood World's selection process, but the full political stakes and the identity of later competitors remain uncertain.

McGill retakes engineering through a costly hull assault. Harris and Toro die during the fighting, and grenades badly puncture the drive's cooling system, but living prisoners are finally captured. Repair crews save the transport by venting heat and restoring coolant circulation. The techsmith researcher discovers paired gateway posts carried by Varus and concludes that the diplomatic mission conceals an invasion capability. McGill forces a private meeting with Tribune Deitch. She orders secrecy, confirms that Claver is the contact agent, and makes McGill her confidential source without plainly admitting the full plan. Meanwhile, McGill begins a relationship with Evelyn Thompson. The repaired transport resumes its voyage toward Blood World.

Deitch reveals that Earth must win a single-elimination contest to gain Blood World's enormous army. McGill's unit next faces shielded Saurians without revival support. Acid artillery kills Leeson and Toro, while Sargon takes over the surviving guns. McGill discovers that Claver commands the enemy. During a parley, Claver demands a planet and a later revival in exchange for cooperation. McGill accepts, kills him as agreed, and dies when Varus artillery destroys the pursuing Saurians. After revival, McGill finds Claver bargaining with Deitch. Claver murders her, Winslade records McGill beside the body, and the conspirators kill him to complete the frame. Evelyn Thompson and the techsmith researcher secretly restore McGill. Thompson admits she works for Turov, and the two women send him through the gateway to Earth to report the conspiracy.

Turov tells McGill that Legion Germanica is secretly another Earth-backed contestant intended to defeat Varus in the final, ensuring Earth wins regardless. She sends him back because Claver and Winslade have disrupted that arrangement. In the next Pit round, invisible Volbites kill Della, Harris, Kivi, and many other Varus troops. Winslade orders McGill to throw the contest, but McGill instead supports Graves's counterattack. He finds Geetha directing small helpers who supply the Volbites with stealth technology and negotiates with her. Geetha says Blood World's people regard McGill as humanity's true warlord. She also exposes the deeper fix: Germanica represents Earth, while Varus officially represents Rigel, so neither expected outcome gives Earth an uncontested claim. Varus defeats the Volbites, but the political problem remains.

Germanica destroys the retreating Varus force, but Geetha warns that a victory showing McGill humiliated will not satisfy Blood World's population. McGill escapes custody with her stealth suit and interrupts the victory ritual, claiming its prize before Germanica's tribune. Their dispute becomes an unarmored sword fight to the death. Badly wounded, McGill kills the tribune and is publicly recognized as the victor, making Earth Blood World's ally. After dying and reviving, he learns that the agreement requires him to become Geetha's consort and personally command the planet's army. He accepts under orders. During the first mass troop transfer, he accidentally walks through the active gateway to Earth. The gateway closes behind him, leaving the Blood World deployment underway while Turov treats his unexpected return as possible desertion and suspects that he may answer to an unknown higher patron.

McGill's public duel secures Blood World's allegiance to Earth, but the agreement also makes him Geetha's consort and nominal commander of the planet's enormous army. He accidentally crosses the active gateway to Earth as the first Blood World forces deploy. Geetha bars him from returning, although her world continues honoring its military agreement, and Drusus demobilizes him at centurion rank. Claver then admits that he had tried to deliver Blood World to the Regalians in exchange for peace. With that arrangement ruined, he warns that Earth faces a frontier war over Imperial province 929 and kills himself. McGill returns to Georgia, where he stops Etta from exposing Blood World's location and suspects Galina Turov has placed him under surveillance.
