In short (whole book)

Theo, Fiyu, and Nauda pursue separate soulcrafting goals while a planted artifact drives demon attacks and political conflict in the Dustwind Plateaus. Fiyu becomes a ruler, Nauda recovers a weir key, and Theo gathers materials while investigating the crisis. The companions reunite during a battle involving House Blacksilver, the Asplendat Movement, House Crimson, the Order of the Deepest Blue, fleshmaskers, and a Bloodcrete war construct. They expose the artifact and prevent a fourth-stage demon from fully forming. Dan ascends to stronghold, the attackers are checked, and Homes later reports the artifact ruined, but the political struggle remains unresolved. Theo, Fiyu, Nauda, Fiyu's relative, and Senka leave for the next world to seek authority advancement and investigate Vistul's cross-world scheme. Cree-Cree and Navim remain on Celeste, while a separate offworld faction continues to control a Tatian community.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Theo, Fiyu, and Nauda became companions while developing distinct forms of soulcrafting across the Nine Worlds. Theo is a gravity soulcrafter allied with House Blacksilver in Norro Yorthin, Fiyu combines light and kante techniques, and Nauda practices healing through natural materials. Their wider circle includes Cree-Cree, a ruler-tier fighter from Celeste, and Navim, an Arbai researcher who collaborates with Theo. Nauda has ties to Queen Yessir's colony, while Fiyu continues to learn from her authority-level relative without surrendering control of her own development. Senka is a knowledgeable traveler afflicted by a curse that disrupts her memory and awareness. Theo's conflict with Vistul remains unresolved, and all three companions need rare materials, sound designs, and access to other worlds before they can safely advance further.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Theo gathers gravity-aligned black sand during a dangerous Arbai expedition and brings it to Navim for use in his soul-home windows. He also retrieves Cree-Cree, who has completed her third floor but is still adjusting her understanding of other people. Fiyu designs a corporeal floor based on her own identity, collecting a shadow mind, dark plasma, and light-absorbing feathers under her relative's guidance. On Celeste, Nauda gains a royal-bee hive and a new military role with Queen Yessir, while Tithes warns her to secure a weir key. Back in Norro Yorthin, Theo learns that an outside power has planted a demon-summoning artifact in the Dustwind Plateaus to provoke a regional conflict. House Blacksilver cannot intervene openly, so Theo and Cree-Cree begin a covert investigation without official protection.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Nauda establishes allies in an abandoned termite city, defeats a war-bred acid devil, and recovers the weir key she was sent to find. Fiyu completes her ruler ascension, merging her body with a corporeal floor that makes her stealth and kante abilities innate. In the Dustwind Plateaus, Theo meets the cursed Senka and gains a possible route toward the next world. He attacks an Asplendat convoy carrying Bloodcrete, but turns the confrontation into a conditional agreement with Homes: if Theo proves outside manipulation, Homes will seek a pause in his movement's operations. House Blacksilver takes over the initial plateau investigation. Nauda returns with Dan and entrusts her recovered key to the house, while Theo learns that her newly discovered gate may offer an indirect route into a hostile empire. The companions then separate again, with Theo assigned to reconnaissance and Nauda returning to Tatian for personal work.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Theo scouts the hostile empire and concludes that its aggression may be another part of Vistul's scheme. Nauda visits Tatian, where she finds one city held through coercion and consults her former mentor Nanjuma. Fiyu returns from gathering deep-ocean materials just as rival forces converge on the Dustwind Plateaus. Wraith Darkblade, presented as evidence against Norro Yorthin, rejects the Order of the Deepest Blue's claims and escapes through a breach in reality. The House of the Lost then abducts Theo and reveals that he has no surviving Earth body. It attributes a wider program of cross-world recruitment and accelerated ascension to Vistul. Theo returns rather than abandon the plateaus. When the standoff becomes open battle, Fiyu and her relative locate the planted demon artifact, while Nauda rejoins the group and helps destroy a demon titan. The artifact is seized and publicly exposed, but six titans begin merging into a still greater threat.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Three strongholds prevent a fourth-stage demon from fully manifesting, but a fleshmasker attack turns the contest over the artifact into a multi-sided battle. Tithes brings a stolen Sleskin army through a gate, while his father and a massive Bloodcrete golem enter the struggle. Theo and Cree-Cree defend the House Blacksilver position until a fleshmasker authority tears off Cree-Cree's arm and badly wounds Theo. Fiyu and her relative defeat the Order of the Deepest Blue authority after breaking its containment. Nauda reaches the artifact, but Homes overpowers her and takes it for examination instead of destroying it. Theo finishes the refinements needed to channel his singularity through all three floors of his soul home, then kills the exhausted fleshmasker with decisive help from Cree-Cree. Dan ascends to stronghold, preventing Tithes' father from dominating the field. Tithes withdraws protection from his imported army once it has served his purpose, and Nauda treats Theo, Cree-Cree, and the other survivors as the battle ends.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

The survivors rebuild after the plateau battle, but the settlement is temporary. Homes reports that the demon-summoning artifact has been damaged beyond repair and that the Order of the Deepest Blue has been driven from Asplendat territory. Bloodcrete production continues, while House Coin treats its support for House Blacksilver and the plateaus as an investment. Tithes reveals that his father has interworld backing for a plan to unite the continent under House Crimson, although Tithes refuses to inherit that project. Theo receives another material needed for his authority design but does not ascend. Nauda is formally accepted as a symbiote by the leaf-puller colony and receives a compatible sublime hive. Cree-Cree stays on Celeste to heal and train, and Navim remains to pursue independent research. Theo, Fiyu, Nauda, Fiyu's relative, and Senka depart for the next world to seek advancement and investigate Vistul. Elsewhere, Nanjuma discovers that a fallen offworld authority and allied rulers control a Tatian community with the Land Guard's consent. He escapes, but the hostile alliance remains in power.

How does it end? (ending)

The struggle in the Dustwind Plateaus ends with the planted demon artifact disabled, the Bloodcrete golem destroyed, and the immediate fleshmasker attack defeated. Dan's rise to stronghold prevents Tithes' father from taking control, but no lasting political settlement follows. Homes says the artifact was damaged beyond repair and that the Order of the Deepest Blue has been expelled from Asplendat territory, although Bloodcrete production continues. Tithes rejects his father's plan to unite the continent under House Crimson, while revealing that the plan has support from an unidentified interworld organization. Theo remains below authority but completes vital improvements to his soul home. He leaves for the next world with Fiyu, Nauda, Fiyu's relative, and Senka to pursue advancement and investigate Vistul. Cree-Cree stays on Celeste to recover and train, while Navim remains to conduct research. Nanjuma ends the book confronting a separate danger: offworld rulers retain control of a Tatian community with the Land Guard's acceptance.
