In short (whole book)

Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu prepare for war while rebuilding their soul homes and investigating House Crimson. A clash with the Wild Tribes and House Crimson breaks a weir key, scattering them and their allies across insect-dominated Celeste. Theo joins Cathina and Cree-Cree, Fiyu protects an injured House Crimson healer, and Nauda is drawn into Tithes' plan to steal and return Queen Yessir's egg. Isaac betrays Fiyu's group and nearly kills Nauda, whose bonds fungi then spread through her body and soul home. After the companions reunite, Nauda learns to control the fungi. Tithes secures Queen Yessir's protection, Fiyu reunites with her relative, and their alliance kills Queen Ayona. Nauda saves a neutral leaf-puller mound and becomes its symbiote, while Theo forces an army to retreat. Nauda remains on Celeste to heal; Theo and Fiyu leave for separate next steps as threats involving Ichil, House Crimson, Vistul, and the expanding Asplendat Movement remain open.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Theo, a traveler from Earth and gravity soulcrafter, became a ruler allied with House Blacksilver in Norro Yorthin. He travels with Nauda, a Tatian staff fighter and natural-material soulcrafter, and Fiyu, an Ichil scout whose light techniques provide stealth and perception. Their time in the Chasm left Nauda's soul home devastated and placed emotional strain on the three companions after Fiyu proposed a lifelong bond with both of them. Theo emerged with powerful materials but still needs a carefully built soul home before attempting authority. He also remains committed to opposing Vistul, the interworld enemy connected to the earlier vault disaster. Nauda begins this volume physically capable but spiritually damaged, while Fiyu has delayed her own advancement as she waits for an absent relative. Navim remains a trusted technical collaborator. House Crimson authority Tithes has an unsettling interest in Nauda, and his house's ambitions form part of the danger surrounding Norro Yorthin.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Theo supports San Frasken in a limited battle against the Asplendat Movement and water Fythens, earning dense crest and other materials for his third floor. Back in Norro Yorthin, House Blacksilver expects him to compete in the coming war games, where rare materials and political leverage will be available. He refuses to rush his eventual authority ascension and continues seeking a precise blueprint. Nauda, meanwhile, helps rural villagers but discovers that a corpse-consuming fungus has entered her damaged soul home. House Blacksilver's recovery specialist quarantines the growth and burns it with sublime lava, yet learns that it feeds on kante and may be unusually difficult to remove from a ruler. Nauda rejects the prospect of building around permanent limitations. Fiyu worries about both Nauda's condition and the unresolved strain among the companions. The situation grows more dangerous when a water-Fythen cult binds Nauda and calls her an outsider from beyond the Nine Worlds. Tithes frees her, then acknowledges his connection to the Chasm door and warns that his father's plans for House Crimson may extend beyond local politics.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Theo acquires grizzle root for his soul home, develops stronger defenses and a nonlethal disorientation technique, and keeps his distance from Wraith Darkblade, a wealthy apparent Earth outsider who soon claims an Artifact of Elgiera. House Crimson's pressure on the Wild Tribes becomes open conflict. Theo accompanies House Blacksilver to witness House Crimson capturing tribal fighters under false pretenses, but political scrutiny does not end the house's operations. Nauda's crisis deepens as bonds fungi spread through her foundation despite repeated treatments. She refuses an authority-level scouring that would cause lasting damage, and the recovery specialist ends formal treatment. Isolated and distressed, Nauda finally asks Theo to help redesign her soul home from the foundation upward. Together they plan a statue-shaped structure with separate living, death, and inorganic columns, incorporating surviving materials and the fused remains of her old construction. Theo gives her a static stone for the staff tower, and their practical trust is restored. The rebuilding offers a viable future, although Nauda is unlikely to recover enough for the war games.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

Theo and Nauda begin considering whether the bonds fungi can be controlled instead of eradicated. With Navim's stone-shaping help, Nauda completes enough of her first floor to regain all her techniques, integrates a Chasm heart into her hard oak, and returns to field readiness. Her partnership with Navim also becomes personal. Fiyu joins Theo and Nauda on the expedition rather than remain behind, while her authority-level relative reaches the route toward Norro Yorthin. He has received a message suggesting that House Blacksilver controls Fiyu, but war and a closed gate prevent him from confirming it. The expedition reaches the Wild Tribes horde alongside forces from House Blacksilver, House Crimson, and the House of Coin. House Crimson's internal struggle erupts during the battle, leaving one of its authorities badly wounded. Fiyu's relative arrives and misreads an ally's restraint of Fiyu as an attack. As authorities clash, a House Crimson stronghold breaks a weir key. The resulting breach scatters Theo, Nauda, Fiyu, a merchant-house ruler, and other combatants into an unknown world, separating the companions at the moment the political conflict turns violent.

Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)

The scattered survivors land on Celeste, where the altered atmosphere impairs breathing and organized insect colonies dominate the region. Theo reunites with House of Coin ruler Cathina and learns that he can interpret Sleskin pheromone meanings. After hostile scouts kill a House Crimson companion, Theo and Cathina retain Cree-Cree as a guide. Nauda survives alone among exploited leaf-puller beetles until Tithes finds her and draws her into a plan to obtain a way home. Fiyu travels with an injured House Crimson healer and locates Nauda across an active warfront. Isaac, a coercive Wild Tribes leader, gathers followers and approaches Theo's group at a kante-rich merm pit. Queen Ayona's Blue-Red-Blue colony holds the advantage over Queen Yessir's Grey-Blue-Gold colony. At Tithes' direction, Nauda steals Queen Yessir's captured egg from a convoy. Meanwhile, Isaac intends to betray Theo, but Cree-Cree disrupts the ambush and an adolescent merm attacks. Theo kills it with his singularity, allowing his party to harvest valuable materials and a tunnel egg. Isaac withdraws, while Theo gains both resources and a design insight for integrating grizzle root into his soul home.

Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)

Fiyu and the injured healer rescue Nauda and Queen Yessir's egg, then accept Isaac's offer of passage through the death zone. The offer is a trap. Isaac attacks Fiyu, but Nauda intercepts the ruler-tier strike and suffers a catastrophic abdominal wound. Isaac steals supplies and departs with new recruits, leaving Fiyu to command a divided camp. Sublime honey lets the healer stop Nauda's immediate bleeding, but bonds fungi spread throughout Nauda's soul home and begin hardening her body. Across the warfront, Theo helps Cree-Cree build a stronger foundation and ascend to ruler. He completes his own third floor, strengthens his singularity, and launches a crossing with Cathina and Cree-Cree. They survive attacks from both colony armies and reach Fiyu under her stealth. Reunited with Nauda, Theo learns that the fungi have overtaken her construction. Nauda asks him to carry on her plans to free Nukoko from Ariano of the Golden Wings and to challenge the authority ruling her birthplace if she dies. Theo refuses to accept that outcome and begins training her to control invasive materials, starting with a measured dose of merm poison.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

Nauda learns to move bonds fungi out of her soul home's interior and use it to reinforce the outer walls, establishing a path toward coexistence rather than eradication. Tithes then returns the stolen queen egg to Queen Yessir and reveals that he engineered the theft to secure Grey-Blue-Gold's protection. The party gains a promised route home in exchange for joining her war. When Queen Yessir tries to claim Fiyu's service, Fiyu's relative arrives. He confirms her safety, accepts her trust in Theo and Nauda, and joins the alliance. Together they discover that the alarming biolumen message he received was subtly falsified. During the decisive fighting, Queen Yessir kills Queen Ayona with his help. Nauda and Theo split away to defend a neutral leaf-puller mound from the advancing army. Bonds fungi protects Nauda through otherwise fatal wounds, and the beetles recognize her as their symbiote. Theo's strengthened singularity forces the attackers to retreat. Nauda remains with the leaf-pullers to build a healing chamber. Cathina, Cree-Cree, and Tithes stay on Celeste, while Theo and Fiyu leave for connected next steps. The altered message, House Crimson struggle, surviving Sleskin forces, and rapid Asplendat expansion remain unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Queen Yessir recovers her egg and kills Queen Ayona with help from Fiyu's relative, but the opposing consort and surviving forces leave the Sleskin war unfinished. Nauda masters bonds fungi while defending a neutral leaf-puller mound, survives grievous wounds, and is accepted by the beetles as their symbiote. She remains on Celeste to pursue a healing chamber and direct her own reconstruction. Theo's strengthened singularity drives off the attacking army, and he later turns toward an old ally's legacy while maintaining his commitment to oppose Vistul. Fiyu reunites with her relative, who accepts her independence, but the falsification of her biolumen message points toward an unresolved danger connected to Ichil. Cathina and Cree-Cree remain on Celeste with Queen Yessir's side. Tithes also stays there as his aunt recovers and House Crimson's internal contest continues. Meanwhile, the Asplendat Movement is advancing with possible outside support, raising the prospect of a broader war.
