Continuing the Millennial Mage series, mage protector Tala travels with a merchant caravan through a dangerous forest toward the city of Makinaven, defending against escalating attacks from Leshkin, hostile plant-based creatures that combine into more powerful forms as combat continues. She trains a newly awakened gravity-manipulation ability under pressure from both the Leshkin and brutal sparring sessions with her powerful companion Terry, discovering that her usual magical defenses are vulnerable to the creatures' corrosive blood and sap. As the caravan pushes deeper into the forest, the attacks intensify, forcing Tala to adapt her abilities in real time to protect the guards and travelers around her.
