Tala escorts a caravan through a forest overwhelmed by unusually aggressive Leshkin, loses and regenerates an arm, and reaches Makinaven after five guards die. In the city she restores the casting rings lost with the limb, upgrades her soul-bound weapon, expands Kit, and works with Jevin on a dimensional tether and systematic gravity training. She begins the long process of becoming Fused while developing better targeting, multi-target control, and attraction between selected masses. An investigation indicates that a hostile arcane may have reached her inside a human city and altered her memory. A profitable but dangerous hunt confirms both her growing strength and the need for restraint. Her closest new training partner later enters an inherited lethal combat state during sparring, injures her, and reconciles with her after explaining it. At the close, Tala remains in Makinaven, prioritizing fusion and sustainable recovery while the Leshkin anomaly, unsafe soul bonds, and her missing memories remain unresolved.

So far this book: Tala's caravan enters the forest on the route to Makinaven, where migrating great trees obstruct travel and Leshkin attacks rapidly intensify. Tala begins training active gravity manipulation, first changing her own effective weight and then applying the effect to other targets. Terry proves overwhelmingly superior in a harsh sparring session, but his direct combat value against Leshkin is limited because their caustic sap makes physical attacks dangerous to him. Tala's usual defenses are also a poor match for them. The caravan loses guards as lesser Leshkin escalate into warriors and knights. Tala's gravity magic becomes valuable for destabilizing the attackers even though it is not yet a fast killing tool. Near the city's protective boundary, a juggernaut charges. Tala pins it with extreme gravity, but its thrown glaive severs her right arm and kills a guard behind her. Her inscriptions regenerate the limb almost at once, consuming most of her reserves. The restored arm leaves her physically whole, but the original arm and the rings it carried are now stored in Kit, while the juggernaut remains a threat.

So far this book: The caravan reaches Makinaven after surviving a final assault by Leshkin that have crossed the boundary where they should be unable to operate. Two juggernauts pursue Tala, and the caravan mage keeps an opening in her shield long enough for the fellow protector to pull Tala inside. The attackers eventually break back into lesser forms, allowing the caravan to escape. Five guards have died during the route, with many more seriously injured. Tala discovers that regenerating her arm did not restore the casting rings and secondary inscription channels lost with it. In Makinaven, a practitioner approved by Holly restores the missing offensive activations and recovers the gold from the severed limb. Tala refuses a duplicate set for her other hand because she wants greater active control rather than deeper reliance on fixed triggers. The caravan mage helps her recognize her emotional distance from the deaths and injury as a response to trauma, not evidence that the losses are unimportant. Tala is combat-capable again, but the reason the Leshkin crossed the city's drawdown boundary and concentrated on her remains unknown.

So far this book: Tala settles into Makinaven for training and seeks the Constructionist Guild's help with being thrown around in combat. A Guild alarm mistakes her for a concealed threat until Jevin intervenes. He identifies her as the recently raised Blood Archon, advises systematic testing of her gravity magic, and warns that bonding with Terry is still unsafe. Jevin finds that a captured juggernaut glaive can be merged with Tala's soul-bound weapon, while tests inside Kit show that the storage responds to Tala's will and is unlikely to imprison her easily. Tala also approaches the Culinary Guild for compact expedition food. Its head conditionally accepts Tala as a possible intermediary for a proposal that mage authorities have repeatedly blocked. At a high platform within Makinaven's great tree, Tala studies the connection among her body, spirit, gate, and Archon Star. After an unsuccessful first attempt, she creates a permanent stitch between her physical and spiritual selves. This is her first real step toward becoming Fused, though almost the entire process still lies ahead.

So far this book: Tala begins training with another newly raised Archon, a skilled apprentice of Grediv who has also started the path toward becoming Fused. Jevin completes the merger of Tala's soul-bound weapon with the juggernaut glaive after Tala rejects transformations that would make her more like a Leshkin. The weapon gains a powerful glaive form without changing her identity. Tala postpones binding Kit because a bond would fix an inadequate starting capacity, then spends part of her delayed caravan payment to expand the storage to more than three times its former size. Jevin supplies a dimensional tether meant to limit how far Tala can be displaced from an anchor, along with equipment for testing gravity through barriers. The Culinary Guild provides a large reserve of travel food and confidential access connected to its proposal. An investigating mage then compares Tala's memories with another account and concludes that her earlier hostile arcane encounter probably happened inside a human city. The matter goes to the governing council, while Tala is advised to strengthen her will and soul, continue fusing, and avoid isolation. She also extends active gravity manipulation to two targets.

So far this book: Tala tests Jevin's tether and confirms that it can keep her within a fixed distance of its anchor by warping intervening space, although solid barriers may defeat the connection and abrupt anchor movement makes her severely disoriented. With her training partner's help, she replaces an inefficient targeting image and succeeds in reaching a wooden target through a permeable iron shell. She learns to call her soul-bound weapon into her hand and finds that the tether prevents sparring opponents from hurling her into walls. After he is hurt and truly threatened, an inherited family boon replaces his ordinary control with a primal combat state. He attacks lethally and wounds Tala through the abdomen before her voice reaches him, after which he collapses. Tala's regeneration clears her injuries. When he wakes, he apologizes and explains that the state may treat an attacking friend as an enemy. They reconcile and seek medical assessment, but no simple treatment resolves the underlying danger. A healer also confirms that Terry's smaller form works by placing much of his body outside ordinary space and inertia. At a celebration, a gravity-transport official remembers an Academy meeting Tala cannot recall, adding another gap to the suspected memory intrusion. Tala develops a rapid but inscription-intensive way to increase gravity. She ends by making fusion her highest priority and accepting recovery, nourishment, recreation, and careful training as necessary to sustain that work.

Tala remains in Makinaven after the caravan's departure is delayed. Her casting rings have been restored, her soul-bound weapon has gained a glaive form, and Kit has been expanded but left unbound. Jevin's dimensional tether gives her a way to resist forced movement, while her gravity work now includes multiple targets, attraction between selected masses, and a much faster but costly activation method. She has made her first permanent step toward becoming Fused but is still far from completing the process. Terry remains her partner without a soul bond, since the available options are too dangerous. Tala and the fellow new Archon reconcile after his inherited combat state takes control and nearly turns a sparring match lethal, but the condition remains a risk. The abnormal Leshkin movement is unexplained. Evidence that a hostile arcane reached Tala inside a human city, together with another encounter missing from her memory, keeps the threat of memory intrusion open. Tala ends by accepting that fusion is her central priority and that food, rest, recreation, and measured training are necessary parts of pursuing it.
