In short (whole book)

After Owen destroys a contested dungeon and releases its creatures into the Wilds, Trent Embra prepares a westward company with Carrie, Felicia, his bonded creature, and a silver-haired rogue. His private traveller trial gives him rapid training through Rhea, while evidence of royal interference with class choices makes departure more urgent. Elsewhere, Orion Embra bonds with a sunstrider and resumes his journey toward Wallander. Carrie defeats Jace, the group formally becomes Brambles and Thorns, and Trent grows into its accepted captain. The company enters Mortimer's Miraculous Maze, where Carrie gains a second class and a living slime summon. They escape only after Trent destroys the final guardian and abandons a golden chest to secure possible treatment for Felicia. The company ends the book outside the maze but badly injured, with a wood nymph healer following its trail west.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Trent Embra was known as a violet-eyed Al'rashian adventurer with an uncertain past, a damaged spirit, unusual knowledge of trials, and soulbound equipment. Carrie Moss was an academy fighter, while Felicia was a half-elf mage apprentice. An intelligent young creature was Trent's prospective bond. Lewis Al'dross was the duke of Al'drossford.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

Owen refuses Isaac Devlin's demand for the Iron Wolves' settlement and dungeon. After the Red Tiger Company breaches the enchanted defenses with an alchemical attack, Owen uses a dungeon buster rather than allow the prize to be taken. He dies in the destruction, a spatial breach opens, and released trial beasts spread into the Wilds. Sasha, Gar, and other Iron Wolves escape, while Isaac survives after losing many of his core followers. Trent prepares to leave Belrise with Carrie, Felicia, and his bonded creature. A strange seed-like object activates the deeper purpose of his Storage, allowing him to combine a trial fragment, trial heart, and knowledge compendium into a personal traveller trial. Its keeper, Rhea, trains him at greatly accelerated subjective speed and warns him about the uncontrolled Heart of the Inferno within him. Trent gains spear skills and begins learning command through constructed battle exercises. Meanwhile, Lewis Al'dross continues resisting royal influence, and ancient figures interested in Al'rashian bonds examine Trent's prospective bond with his intelligent young companion.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

Rhea explains that the familiar set of basic classes is only a fraction of what should exist. She suspects a king's will is restricting choices throughout the kingdom and urges Trent to take his companions west before the situation worsens. Trent nevertheless keeps his final slot open for the dangerous Shadowhunter path. He trains Carrie in practical combat and tests whether both Carrie and Felicia are ready for wild trials. Felicia's inherited account of her family and Tenredi contains serious contradictions. Trent invokes Terra in a life-staked truth ceremony. The ceremony disproves important parts of the story but does not establish who killed Felicia's family. Terra strengthens Felicia, gives Trent seeds, and leaves him owing an unspecified favor. Elsewhere, Orion Embra and his Windblade companion find a wounded sunstrider amid the spreading consequences of collapsed trials. Orion is carrying a lost king's message toward Clan Embra in Wallander. With a Grimtosh pack approaching, he refuses to abandon the creature, and his companion stays to help him face the attack.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Orion forms a genuine bond with the sunstrider, saves the Windblade companion from the Grimtosh, and regains his former high-level Swordmaster and Dragoon capabilities. The three continue toward Wallander with the king's message. In Belrise, the silver-haired royal rogue discovers that Lewis Al'dross is openly spreading class guides and expanding access to guild systems. She concludes that his policies defy kingdom controls and seeks a team of her own. Her attempt to approach Trent's group is complicated by accidental intoxication and Carrie's dispute with Jace. Carrie accepts a guild duel rather than pay Jace to leave his charter. He wins, but Jace breaks the truce by attacking with a real sword. Trent stops him, and Jace forfeits his equipment and effective claim over Carrie. Tersa enters the Storm Guard, where her lightning abilities, durability, and separate Thief class make her a prospective trap specialist. Trent, Felicia, the bonded creature, and the silver-haired rogue sign a company charter. Carrie overcomes his fear of charters, joins them, and proposes the name Brambles and Thorns. With Trent as captain and Felicia managing their funds, the newly equipped company commits to travelling west.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

Trent absorbs several crafting skills too quickly and must integrate the resulting knowledge while Brambles and Thorns begins its journey. His efforts to train the others reveal both his combat advantage and his uncertainty about leadership. During an archery trial, he concludes that his best approach combines preparation, movement, traps, and protection of his companions rather than a rigid class role. The elder hunt spirit interferes with Rhea's constructed lesson, spends Trent's stored resources, and forces him through an unguided challenge. Trent learns Sleight of Hand and gains a better understanding of the uncertainty ordinary adventurers face. The episode exposes a serious problem of permission and control within his private trial. Back on the road, Trent and his bonded creature gain new movement skills, while Trent's reaction to the rogue's summoned stallion deepens his fear of ever being bound as someone else's disposable summon. Felicia openly supports Trent as captain despite his flaws and challenges the silver-haired rogue's continuing effort to take command. The full party then enters a wandering cottage trial. Its entrance disappears, and the first room teaches them that they are inside a shifting puzzle dungeon where hidden objects, reversed clues, locks, and careless experimentation can determine their route.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

The party learns that Mortimer's Miraculous Maze offers several solutions to each room, different rewards for speed and route, and possible exits after every sixth room. They cross a vast ravine by decoding a wall map, activating temporary structures with fire, and combining the rogue's silk with their own ropes. Trent also recovers a valuable enchantment schematic. The maze rewards the group individually before sending them into a grid of color-changing slimes, where fire exposes both a path and a hidden transition. While the company continues through the maze, its keeper enters Rhea's sanctuary and claims the rights of a conqueror. Rhea answers by forming an equal, blood-sealed agreement with the elder hunt spirit. The spirit becomes her guardian, establishes that the maze keeper initiated a contest by intruding, and prevents him from controlling what Rhea learns about her new status. The maze keeper expects that his loss will eventually require him to surrender spoils. Rhea gains protection and a path toward understanding her independent existence, but she still cannot access her status or freely warn Trent about the maze's lethal possibilities.

Story so far - through chapter 52 (this book)

The maze sends the party through a dangerous slide and into a trapped room where Carrie becomes encased in hardening material. Trent frees him by combining earth manipulation with Wither in a hazardous form of old magic that may endanger his Shadowhunter title. The bonded creature reveals hidden pillar numbers, and the group defeats the room's stone constructs. In the following safe zone, Carrie attempts to learn what appears to be a slime spell. It is actually a concealed contract that gives him a second, summoner class without removing his warrior class, apparently breaking part of the kingdom's inherited restriction. His summon is a living slime rather than a conventional mark. In Belrise, a disguised wood nymph healer learns that Carrie has gone west with Trent and begins tracking their party through plant roots. After two days of recovery, Brambles and Thorns continues through the maze. A false meadow puzzle floods the group into another chamber, and their escape leaves Carrie with a broken arm, Felicia seriously ill, and both the bonded creature and rogue injured. Trent defeats a shape-changing game-board guardian with recovered acids, collects items that may treat Felicia, and forces open the exit. He deliberately leaves a golden chest behind. The company escapes the maze under Trent's accepted leadership, but its injuries and Felicia's condition remain urgent as the healer follows from behind.

How does it end? (ending)

Brambles and Thorns escapes Mortimer's Miraculous Maze, but the company emerges in immediate danger. Carrie has a broken arm, the bonded creature and silver-haired rogue are injured, and Felicia is seriously ill. Trent defeats the shape-changing game-board guardian with acids collected earlier, gathers the supplies most likely to help Felicia, and forces open the exit instead of remaining for a golden chest. He is now accepted as the company's captain, while Carrie remains both a warrior and the holder of an unusual living slime summon. Rhea has gained the elder hunt spirit as an equal guardian, though her contest with the maze keeper is unfinished. Orion continues toward Wallander with the Windblade companion and his bonded sunstrider, while the wood nymph healer follows Trent's party west. Trent's past and damaged spirit, Felicia's family history, Terra's favor, the kingdom's restriction on classes, and the consequences of Owen's destroyed dungeon all remain unresolved.
