In short (whole book)
With Earth facing a Maxolhx-made cloud that could block sunlight, Joe Bishop and Skippy turn a hidden servicing station into the foundation of a stronger human fleet. They steal relativistic darts and wormhole controllers, strike Maxolhx targets, and support breakaway populations to build a new alliance. The campaign brings limited victories and covert Jeraptha aid, but it also drives the Maxolhx and Rindhalu into coordinated action. After their combined forces damage Admiral Zhao's fleet, Bishop fakes the power to disable distant wormhole networks and wins a temporary strategic pause. The Rindhalu offer technical help against Earth's cloud and warn of an attack elsewhere. The book closes with David Chica, Janes, and their landing force isolated on a hostile world as a burning starship falls toward them, while Earth's crisis and the wider war remain unresolved.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Joe Bishop commands Valkyrie with the Elder AI Skippy, while Flying Dutchman and a growing collection of alien-built ships serve humanity beyond Earth. Human forces have survived conflicts among the Ruhar, Maxolhx, Rindhalu, Thuranin, Jeraptha, and their client species, but remain far weaker than the senior powers. The Alien Legion and the Mavericks provide a basis for cooperation with alien soldiers outside the established coalitions. Earth, Paradise, and humanity's off-world forces are all vulnerable, and Skippy's rare abilities make both him and Bishop central to UNEF strategy.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
Maxolhx forces destroy the Jeraptha ships that were meant to strengthen humanity, while a manufactured cloud approaches a position where it can cut sunlight reaching Earth. Civilian disruption spreads, and David Chica turns to an Earth-based Skippy submind for help moving his parents south. Bishop argues that humanity cannot defeat the cloud directly and must compel the Maxolhx to remove it. Admiral Reichert, meanwhile, intends the crisis to lure humanity's new fleet home for destruction. UNEF promotes Bishop and authorizes his special-mission group to strike a remote Maxolhx shipyard. Valkyrie slips through the installation's defenses, launches nuclear weapons from inside a maintenance bay, and escapes after destroying the yard and several major warships. The raid provides a visible act of retaliation, but Earth remains exposed and the human fleet is still under-equipped.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Data taken during the shipyard raid exposes a Maxolhx contingency to evacuate chosen survivors beyond the galaxy, activate Elder weapons, and return after the Sentinels destroy galactic life. The same intelligence leads Valkyrie to a long-isolated servicing station. The crew restores enough of it to establish Ragnar Anchorage, giving humanity fabricators, parts, missiles, and a much faster route to refitting its fleet. Admiral Zhao reorganizes the upgrade program around the station. Flying Dutchman is assigned to reconnaissance near Earth, but sealed orders also begin a covert extraction effort. Samantha Reed leads the insertion while Emily Perkins holds temporary command. Colonel Chang, selected personnel, early-warning equipment, and Bishop's family are removed from Earth. Margaret Adams identifies herself to Bishop's parents as his girlfriend and explains why leaving them available as hostages would endanger his command freedom.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Bishop searches for leverage strong enough to make the Maxolhx reverse the attack on Earth. Skippy detects clusters of relativistic darts, but matching their speed would make an interception impractical. Bishop instead has Valkyrie arrange a chain of micro-wormholes that lets Skippy remain in contact long enough to penetrate a dart's control system. The first captured AI calls itself Marty the Bringer of Doom, and the technique gives humanity control of a larger formation. Valkyrie then uses precisely placed moving wormholes to redirect six darts through the defenses of a Maxolhx research world. Their impacts destroy the main target and damage other underground facilities. Bishop publicly accepts responsibility, demands removal of Earth's cloud, and warns that further protected worlds can be reached. The Maxolhx now know humanity can turn their own strategic weapons against them, but they do not understand how.
Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)
The continuing need for Valkyrie to open secure routes threatens to limit fleet operations, so Bishop seeks additional Elder wormhole controllers. A Star Team raid on a museum steals working modules while misleading investigators about which artifacts matter. After testing, the controllers can schedule access to Ragnar and Jaguar without Valkyrie's direct presence. Skippy also begins a long-term search for indirect signs of dormant Elder AIs. With refits ahead of schedule, Zhao divides the Navy into independently operating fleets and launches Operation Payback. At a Thuranin-held system, the human ships destroy the local warships, defenses, and shipyard without Skippy directing the battle. Sixteen humans die and multiple vessels are damaged, but the victory proves the Navy can execute a coordinated combat mission on its own.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
Zhao completes the retaliatory campaign by defeating another client-state force while limiting attacks on civilian and surface targets. Humanity then shifts from punishment to alliance building. At Casternull, a prepared local movement breaks from Ruhar rule, forms a mutual-defense pact with humanity, and supplies volunteers for a renewed Alien Legion. A second breakaway brings tens of thousands more recruits and badly needed transports, but the Ruhar respond by restricting humans on Paradise. The growing force lacks equipment, so Smythe leads a Star Team onto a poorly maintained Kristang weapons transport carried by a Thuranin ship. When quiet access fails and the carrier prepares to leave, the team fights into the control area and connects Skippy directly. He engineers the transport's release and jumps it away. The team survives, and humanity gains powered armor, weapons, ammunition, and the captured vessel.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
The new Legion trains with outdated equipment and inexperienced personnel. Margaret Adams receives Skippy's only Mark VII Delta powered-armor prototype for her work with the Mavericks. Zhao next attacks an occupying fleet over a Ruhar world, wins control of orbit, and sends the Legion into a costly urban campaign. Perkins presents the intervention as liberation rather than conquest, seeking a durable relationship with the local Ruhar. Meanwhile, a Jeraptha covert office steals fifteen obsolete but human-compatible patrol ships and intends to transfer them in exchange for a future favor. It also uses a false human fleet to force an enemy occupation off a Jeraptha world, creating the appearance that humanity will defend Jeraptha interests. On the ground, David helps prevent reprisals against surrendered prisoners. Now engaged to Perkins, he supports Janes's request for a separate allied operation on an isolated world, even as the main Legion prepares to move elsewhere.
Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)
Bishop learns that the Jeraptha impersonation may force humanity to defend a relationship it never authorized. Seeking stronger leverage against Admiral Reichert, Valkyrie uses captured darts to trigger a directed solar flare against a Maxolhx terraformed world after warning its residents to shelter. Humanity again demands removal of Earth's cloud and offers a private route to negotiation. The strike instead accelerates cooperation between the senior species. They destroy nearly every remaining dart group, demand that humanity abandon its allies and off-world presence, and require the surrender of Skippy, the ships, and Elder access. Bishop refuses. Simms then proposes replacing an active Maxolhx relay with an abandoned compatible station. The substitution succeeds and reveals combined Maxolhx-Rindhalu forces waiting in stealth at 137 possible Legion targets. The Legion's current operation is already covered by an overwhelming ambush, forcing Bishop to seek an unconventional rescue.
Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)
The Rindhalu openly join the Maxolhx and attack Zhao's fleet. Four human destroyers are lost and the flagship is disabled. Bishop draws enemy ships close to Valkyrie, then uses a captured dart fragmented into dense projectiles to cripple much of the surrounding senior-species force. The attackers withdraw, but Perkins and Bishop recognize that the Legion cannot safely expand while its allies remain exposed to intervention. Bishop and Skippy answer with a deception. They arrange timed self-diagnostics across several wormhole networks, then present the simultaneous outages as a human ability to disable distant portions of the network. Only they know the shutdown is staged. The resulting fear produces a broad pause in military offensives. A Rindhalu delegation meets aboard Valkyrie and refuses to remove Earth's cloud, but offers expertise to help humanity disperse it and promises to discourage interference. In exchange for intelligence about the Maxolhx evacuation plan, the Rindhalu warn that a hidden Thuranin force threatens the allied operation on a Christang world.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
The wormhole-network bluff buys humanity time without solving its underlying problems. The Maxolhx campaign remains active, the Rindhalu offer only limited cooperation on Earth's cloud, and the senior species can still overpower humanity's fleet if they discover the deception. Their warning about the isolated allied operation arrives too late for Valkyrie to reach it quickly. David Chica, Janes, two companies of human troops, and roughly a thousand allied soldiers have already landed on the Christang world. A concealed Thuranin task force attacks their assault carrier and three destroyer escorts, disables the carrier, and cuts communications with the ground force. The soldiers destroy an attacking gunship, but a large burning starship begins falling toward their position. The book ends with David, Janes, and the landing force stranded beneath that descending wreck, with no outcome yet known. Bishop and the main fleet remain active, while Earth's climate emergency, the alliance campaign, and the false network deterrent all remain unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
The Maxolhx and Rindhalu openly combine forces against humanity, destroying four of Zhao's destroyers and damaging his flagship before Bishop uses a captured dart to break their immediate advantage. With the Alien Legion unable to protect its new allies, Bishop and Skippy stage synchronized wormhole diagnostics as a galaxy-spanning shutdown. The deception halts major offensives and gives humanity bargaining power, but only they know the capability is false. The Rindhalu refuse to clear Earth's cloud themselves, though they offer technical assistance and say they will discourage Maxolhx interference. They also warn that a concealed Thuranin force is attacking the separate operation supported by David Chica and Janes. That landing force loses orbital support when its carrier is disabled. The final scene leaves the troops cut off beneath a descending, burning starship. Bishop, Skippy, Simms, Zhao, Perkins, Adams, Smythe, and the fleet survive, but the cloud, the fragile bluff, Paradise's detained humans, the new client alliances, and the stranded ground force all remain open concerns.
