Bishop rejects both the fatal use of the Elder weapons and an obvious attack on Jupiter. With Valkyrie damaged and Earth still vulnerable, he turns toward a surprise operation intended to obtain Ruhar support, while Avalon, Paradise, and the new human fleet remain exposed.

Previously: Joe Bishop and the Merry Band of Pirates survived their latest crisis, captured the Maxolhx battlecruiser Valkyrie, and used it to save Emily Perkins and the Mavericks from capture. The operation left the crew with Elder weapons that could unleash galaxy-wide destruction, but their authority over those weapons had not been settled. Skippy, the Elder AI whose capabilities make the pirates' missions possible, abandoned Bishop and the crew during the crisis before returning. His remorse did not restore their trust, particularly with Margaret Adams. Humanity remained divided between Earth and Paradise, where the Alien Legion and other displaced people continued under Ruhar authority. The Flying Dutchman and Valkyrie gave Earth limited reach, but neither solved its strategic vulnerability.

A Jeraptha squadron learns that Bishop commands the human-operated Valkyrie and seeks a controlled rendezvous. Bishop then makes humanity's new position public to Kristang and Thuranin witnesses, declaring possession of Elder weapons while Valkyrie destroys military and clan targets connected to murdered and abused human captives. The Jeraptha respond with a tentative offer of transports and a star carrier, potentially easing the problem of moving people from Paradise. Valkyrie next attempts to rescue 289 Keepers held by the Deathstalker Kristang. Their dormitories are rigged for rapid demolition, so Jeremy Smythe leads a covert ground operation rather than risk an obvious ship attack. Adams penetrates her assigned building and discovers a more complex detonator system than expected. She neutralizes the charges under pressure and kills guards who are about to expose the operation. The mission then shifts into an open assault, with dropships striking the guard force while the teams begin evacuating the prisoners. Skippy supports the operation while trying to prove through his conduct that the crew can rely on him again.

The Keeper rescue succeeds without fatalities or serious injuries among the captives. Nine human collaborators are confined aboard Valkyrie, while Bishop welcomes the others home rather than treating every survivor as guilty for remaining under Kristang control. The ship then targets the deeply buried Thuranin bioweapons facility on Slithin. The facility is destroyed and the Thuranin receive a warning against biological attacks on Earth. At Paradise, Bishop privately tells Ruhar administrator Baturnah Logellia that the pirates survived, freed Earth, captured Valkyrie, and hold Elder weapons. He also identifies Skippy as the Elder AI the Ruhar had known as Emby.

Valkyrie's appearance over Paradise proves Bishop's account, but Skippy temporarily seizes Ruhar fleet systems to prevent a panicked attack. Jeraptha transports begin connecting Paradise with Earth, and Bishop reunites with former comrades while confronting the social disruption caused by years of separation. Before returning home, he decides that no single nation should control the Elder weapons. He accepts service with Skippystan while remaining detached from the U.S. Army, creating political distance from national command. Adams and Bishop begin a relationship after she challenges him to provide a durable plan for resolving their chain-of-command problem. Back at Earth, the collapse of the old cover story has made Bishop controversial and brought threats against his family. UNEF learns that the Elder weapons are not a practical shield: they can retaliate against extinction by provoking Sentinel destruction, but cannot stop an initial attack. Earth therefore still needs sensors, conventional ships, technology, and allies. A Jeraptha delegation arrives, and Hans Chotek resumes work with Bishop. Bishop also visits Fal Desai's family and learns that she chose her final pirate mission freely.

Bishop and Adams spend private leave together and establish their relationship on more equal terms. Skippy acknowledges an unspecified personal debt to Adams and begins trying to repay it. Humanity's leaders focus on survival beyond Earth. Avalon, an isolated site outside the galaxy, could preserve a human population and make the Elder-weapons deterrent more credible, although its first survey team lacks adequate supplies and has suffered crop failures. Jennifer Simms and Frank Muller consider roles there, while Colonel Chang becomes UN Secretary for Homeworld Security and Hans Chotek moves toward ambassador-at-large duties. Skippy also makes Bishop the president of Skippystan and uses a digital imitation of him for public business without permission. Jeremy Smythe declines a senior headquarters command so he can remain available for operations. Emily Perkins and the Mavericks return with thousands of personnel from Paradise and propose a longer-term Alien Legion strategy. The Jeraptha agree to transfer obsolete warships, assault transports, carriers, support ships, and an orbital servicing platform. Skippy and Nagatha start expanding the fabricators that will rebuild this force at the remote base. Adams applies to the Alien Legion's star team, removing herself from Bishop's chain of command while continuing their relationship. The Maxolhx, however, conclude that humans are unlikely to trigger the Elder weapons unless Earth faces extinction. Admiral Reichert therefore advances a policy of pressure below that threshold. Rindhalu threats force both the Ruhar and Jeraptha to retreat from open cooperation. A stealth Maxolhx missile strike destroys the Jeraptha carrier and human survey transport bound for Paradise, killing more than three hundred humans. A Bosphorok raid then kills more than six hundred people on Paradise and seriously injures at least 1,100, while another force attacks Earth, destroys human space assets, strikes major command sites, and ruins key industrial plants. Despite publicly freezing further transfers, Jeraptha officers covertly make forty-three ships disappear and send Bishop a concealed route to recover them. Valkyrie leaves Earth behind a holographic decoy to pursue the opportunity.

The supposedly stolen Jeraptha fleet is moved to a revised rendezvous near the Eagle Nebula. At the original location, Maxolhx forces destroy the transfer group, leaving only an isolated Jeraptha survivor in an escape pod. Meanwhile, more than two dozen Maxolhx warships enter the Solar System and place unexplained devices inside Jupiter. UNEF assigns Mark Friedlander to lead the investigation. Bishop approaches the revised meeting cautiously, scanning from long range and concealing Valkyrie's true jump accuracy, but the apparent Jeraptha ships are holograms projected by drones. Admiral Reichert has surrounded the area with stealthed warships and overlapping damping fields designed to prevent escape and secure Skippy. With Valkyrie's engines disrupted and the enemy tightening the trap, Skippy cancels the ship's momentum so the pursuing formation overshoots. The maneuver allows Valkyrie to jump away, likely damaging Skippy and multiple ship systems; their condition remains unresolved.

Valkyrie remains trapped beneath the ice giant's clouds while Reichert's fleet waits above. Skippy's canister is physically diminished, but signs of hidden medical and engineering intervention suggest he is still functioning. Bishop provokes him back into communication and learns that the escape damaged him severely while leaving some close-range abilities intact. Reichert sends a frigate to verify Skippy's presence and board Valkyrie. Bishop admits the assault party as part of a trap. Once the Maxolhx are aboard, Skippy disables their powered armor and compromises the nearby frigate. Smythe's team captures the boarders, while another human team takes the enemy ship and prevents its destruction. Bishop returns the prisoners in stripped dropships but keeps the frigate, intending to create uncertainty over which vessel might carry Skippy during an escape. The returned prisoners unknowingly spread microscopic malware through quarantine and maintenance systems. Skippy eventually reaches much of the blockade, though periodic purges make that access temporary. On Earth, investigators know that the devices inside Jupiter are expelling selected gases toward the Sun, but their purpose remains unexplained.

The Maxolhx adapt mining equipment into a tractor-field system capable of pulling Skippy from beneath the ice. A Rindhalu scout discovers evidence of the ambush and leaves to summon help, but the expected fleet cannot arrive before Reichert completes his recovery system. Smythe proposes sabotaging the tests through the malware already inside the Maxolhx force. Skippy and Bilby falsify the first results, delaying the program once, but a repeat succeeds and leaves Valkyrie only days before capture. Bishop prepares a final escape attempt rather than surrender. Nineteen Rindhalu ships arrive unexpectedly and negotiate over joint custody of Skippy, revealing that their priority is preventing the Maxolhx from possessing him. Bishop detonates three infected Maxolhx ships near the Rindhalu, provoking a battle between the fleets. As Valkyrie climbs, its weapons cue further malware-controlled explosions throughout the blockade. The captured frigate then performs a deliberately failed jump, briefly disrupting the damping fields so Skippy and Bilby can retune Valkyrie's drive and open an unstable escape wormhole. At the remote human fleet base, Bishop, Simms, Smythe, Skippy, Bilby, and Perkins remain active. Avalon has its first settlers, Nagatha can support fleet construction, and the surviving Jeraptha ships provide a foundation for rebuilding, but none offers an immediate defense of Earth. Humans on Paradise also cannot safely be moved into the coming food crisis. Bishop uses detonations aboard malware-infected ships to provoke a battle between the senior species, then exploits the captured frigate's failed jump to break through the damping fields. Valkyrie survives with structural damage, a serious drive-power fault, and forty percent of its drive coils lost. Skippy remains functional but weakened, and Bilby, Simms, Smythe, Perkins, and Bishop remain active with the surviving force.
