Captain Vorpatril's Alliance

By Lois McMaster Bujold

In this entry of the Vorkosigan Saga, Barrayaran officer Ivan Vorpatril is asked by Imperial Security to quietly make contact with a woman living under a false identity on Komarr, only to be stunned and held captive by her fiercely protective companion, Rish, who suspects he may be a hired killer. After surviving a break-in and abduction attempt at the women's flat, Ivan shelters both of them in his own quarters and begins piecing together their secret: they are refugees from a genetic-engineering house recently overthrown in a hostile takeover, with an unknown bounty now on their heads. When an anonymous denunciation brings police and immigration officers to arrest Ivan and deport Tej, he proposes an emergency marriage to protect her.
