In short (whole book)
On Komarr, Ivan Vorpatril tries to protect the hunted refugees Tej and Rish, only to marry Tej in an emergency maneuver against arrest and deportation. Their intended temporary union survives a failed divorce and becomes increasingly genuine. On Barrayar, Tej's presumed-dead family arrives seeking asylum and secretly tunnels beneath Imperial Security headquarters to recover a lost Cetagandan laboratory. A hired carrier betrays them, an old bomb floods the tunnels, and the damaged ground causes the headquarters to sink. Everyone trapped below is rescued. Gregor converts the resulting legal and political crisis into a settlement that funds House Cordona's return and links it to Barrayar. Tej chooses Ivan over departure with her family. They later live together on Illa, while the Arquas begin rebuilding, Byerly works undercover in Jacksonian space, and the Cordona succession remains unsettled.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Ivan Vorpatril belongs to Barrayar’s extended ruling family, though his cousin Miles Vorkosigan stands ahead of his branch in the succession. Emperor Gregor Vorbarra’s sons have made Ivan’s chance of inheriting the throne remote. Ivan has served under Duv Galeni at the Barrayaran Embassy on Earth and is now an Imperial Service captain. His mother, Lady Alys, has close connections to Imperial Security. Her partner, Simon Illyan, formerly led that service; sabotage of his memory implant forced his retirement and left lasting damage to his recall. Miles now serves as an Imperial Auditor, while Ivan has built a less prominent military career away from the political center in Vorbarr Sultana.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
On Komarr, an Imperial Security operative sends Captain Ivan Vorpatril to contact a shipping clerk called Nanja Brindis, who may be endangered by a smuggling investigation. She and her protector, Rish, initially mistake Ivan for a hired killer. When abductors break into their flat, Ivan helps the women escape to his home. He learns that Nanja is Tej, daughter of the presumed-dead rulers of the overthrown House Cordona, and that Rish is Lapis Lazuli, one of the house's engineered Jewels. Their enemies have placed a bounty on them. A denunciation to immigration and a false kidnapping accusation bring police to Ivan's door. Rather than let Tej and Rish jump from his balcony to avoid capture, Ivan proposes an immediate Barrayaran marriage. He and Tej swear the binding oath, and he employs Rish as Tej's assistant. The maneuver prevents Tej's immediate arrest and gives both women legal protection, though everyone expects the marriage to be temporary.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Ivan exposes the military smuggling operation, then takes Tej and Rish aboard his admiral's ship to Barrayar. During the journey, Ivan and Tej share quarters and their legal marriage becomes physically intimate. In Vorbarr Sultana, Lady Alys and Simon Illyan receive them, and Simon suggests a covert route to Tej's surviving brother on Escobar. Miles Vorkosigan and Emperor Gregor Vorbarra also hear Tej's account. Gregor agrees to seek secure courier transport, but warns that it may take weeks and that her intended refuge needs stronger concealment. Rish begins appearing publicly with the operative from Komarr as part of the official cover story. Meanwhile Ivan and Tej settle into a shared daily life while still pursuing divorce. The district court finds that their freely sworn marriage has no valid grounds for immediate dissolution. Their petition is denied, and they cannot try the same argument again for six months, leaving Ivan's protection and their marriage in force.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Ivan and Tej reject the available ways to force a quick divorce because each would require damaging lies or real harm. Ivan begins considering whether their practical arrangement could become a lasting marriage. The question changes when Tej recognizes nine travelers detained under false identities as her supposedly dead parents, siblings, grandmother, and several Jewels. Ivan posts bond and takes responsibility for the group while their asylum status is reviewed. The reunited Arquas intend to rebuild House Cordona and recover relatives still controlled by their enemies. Their plan depends on a hidden Cetagandan laboratory that Tej's grandmother once operated beneath Vorbarr Sultana. Its stored genetics, records, art, currency, and gold could finance their return. The site, however, now lies beneath Imperial Security headquarters. Tej is drawn into the secret and refuses to explain it unless Ivan first commits himself. Their disagreement over family loyalty and clandestine action strains the marriage, while Simon Illyan and Tej's father begin a guarded relationship based on their shared experience of betrayal.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Tej's family maps the ground near Imperial Security headquarters by disguising vibration measurements as dance practice. Simon notices and deliberately allows the operation to continue. He believes a restored House Cordona might become a useful Imperium ally near wormhole routes influenced by House Pristine. Grandmama, Tej, Amiri, and Pearl open a concealed garage floor and deploy an experimental engineered organism to bore toward the old laboratory. The method is quiet but insufficiently tested outside controlled conditions. Rish ends her relationship with Byerly after he presses her for operational intelligence. The tunnel reaches an older passage containing a dead Barrayaran soldier and a dangerous antique explosive. Shiv hires a former associate to transport and export anything recovered. Tej wagers with Ivan that the bunker is not empty, with his assistance and silence as the stake. She finally leads him underground. Despite his fear of confined spaces, Ivan joins the family at the sealed entrance, where Amiri removes the slab and discovers that valuable material remains inside.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
The Arquas enter a preserved Cetagandan laboratory filled with historical documents, artifacts, and gold. Their hired carrier and armed accomplices then reveal that they are working for House Pristine's bounty. Grandmama's recovered force-field device and Ivan's military training help defeat them, but an old bomb explodes in the access tunnel after Star, Jet, and Rish are intercepted near the exit. Floodwater traps the bunker party. While air and supplies decline, Ivan and Tej openly choose a life together. Rescue engineers break through from above, and a later probe finds Rish and Jet alive in an air pocket. All family members survive. The damaged bore network turns the ground beneath Imperial Security headquarters into unstable mud, causing the building to sink and raising a possible biological hazard. Gregor convenes an inquiry. With the cache valued in the billions, he negotiates a settlement: the Arquas receive a finder's fee reduced by disaster costs, transport back toward Jacksonian space, and an Imperial liaison tied to their future through Rish. In exchange, they leave Barrayar and become a potential strategic ally against House Pristine.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
Tej declines her parents' invitation to depart and states plainly that she is staying with Ivan. Her family leaves Barrayar with an initial share of the recovered value, a military-crewed ship, and an implied agreement with Gregor. Byerly adopts the cover of a Barrayaran fugitive and travels toward Jackson's Whole as part of the new arrangement. Duv Galeni continues the long historical investigation of the bunker material. Later, Ivan and Tej live on Illa, where he serves as senior military attaché and weighs a future in diplomacy. Rish and the reunited Jewels return to performance after Cordona Station is repaired and Topaz recovers from replacement legs. Tej learns that Eric helped House Pristine seize the station before turning against it; he remains in cryogenic suspension while Star and Pidge's succession dispute is stabilized. Grandmama destroys a recovered genetic archive rather than allow its sale. Simon Illyan recovers enough to be considered for occasional varied work. The former Imperial Security headquarters is stabilized and redeveloped, while Ivan and Tej expect eventually to return to Barrayar and postpone children until their travel is less demanding.
How does it end? (ending)
Tej refuses her parents' invitation to leave Barrayar and confirms that her marriage to Ivan is now her own permanent choice. The Arqua family departs with a partial payment from the recovered cache, transport, and a covert understanding with Gregor intended to support the restoration of House Cordona. Byerly travels toward Jackson's Whole under a fugitive cover, while Duv Galeni continues examining the historical material. Rish and Jet have survived, and the reunited Jewels eventually perform again. Ivan and Tej are posted to Illa for roughly two years, where he serves as senior military attaché and considers diplomacy as an alternative to continued military service. Eric remains in cryogenic suspension while Star and Pidge contest the Cordona succession. Simon Illyan has recovered enough for occasional new work, although not his former post. Monitoring continues for effects of the tunneling organism, and the old headquarters is ultimately stabilized and redeveloped.
