Carl's Doomsday Scenario characters

By Matt Dinniman

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Carl (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

Now a rising star of the crawl, Carl enters the third floor having chosen the Primal race, which leaves him looking human, and the Compensated Anarchist class, which leans into his gift for improvised explosives. Still shoeless and pantsless by the game's design, he fights with his fists, his feet, and increasingly elaborate bombs, and his instinct to protect other crawlers and even non-player characters keeps dragging him into quests he never wanted.

Princess Donut (Protagonist)

Also known as Donut

Appears from the start

Carl's talking Persian cat and party leader. Following advice from the talk-show host Odette, she keeps her Cat race and takes the Former Child Actor class, a choice that comes with a manager: Mordecai, now magically bound to appear in any safe room she enters. Vain, theatrical, and fiercely attached to Carl and her pet dinosaur Mongo, she grows into a genuinely dangerous spellcaster on this floor while remaining convinced the whole dungeon is beneath her.

Mordecai (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The pair's guide, now formally bound to Donut as her class-granted manager, summoned into every safe room the party enters whether he likes it or not. He greets the arrangement by drinking heavily, but his encyclopedic knowledge of the dungeon's floors, monsters, and unwritten rules makes him indispensable, and beneath the bitterness he plainly cares what happens to them.

Mongo (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Donut's devoted pet dinosaur, brought down from the second floor. Young, loud, and violent in his mistress's defense, he serves as the party's mount and shock troop, and Donut's willingness to risk her own life for him becomes a point of friction between her and Carl.

Signet (Supporting)

Also known as Tsarina Signet

First appears in chapter 6

An Elite non-player character of the third floor: a tattooed, half-naiad, half-elf tsarina of overwhelming supernatural charisma whose moving tattoos crawl across her skin. She binds Carl into her quest against the corrupted remains of a traveling circus, and her scripted tragedy raises uncomfortable questions about how real the dungeon's people are.

Ringmaster Grimaldi (Antagonist)

Also known as Grimaldi the Pestiferous Vine

First appears in chapter 10

The ringmaster of a once-traveling circus, now a parasitic vine creature presiding over a corrupted troupe of undead performers. He is the monstrous heart of the quest Signet forces on Carl, and confronting him requires walking into the big top itself rather than burning it down.

Miss Quill (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 18

The severe gatekeeper who controls all access to Featherfall, the magistrate of the settlement where Carl and Donut base themselves. The party's investigation into the death of the goblin GumGum runs straight into her obstruction, and getting past her desk becomes a quest problem in its own right.

Katia (Supporting)

Also known as Katia Grim

First appears in chapter 21

A crawler and friend of the Amazon crawler Hekla, struggling with her chosen Doppelganger race: reshaping her body is slow and painful, and she reverts to her true form when she sleeps. Quietly observant and underestimated by everyone including herself, she joins Carl and Donut's party and begins learning to treat her difficult race as a weapon.

Bautista (Supporting)

Also known as Daniel Bautista

First appears in chapter 23

A crawler whose family was wiped out on this floor, encountered as he hunts the things responsible. A swashbuckler by class, capable and level-headed, he thanks Carl and Donut for avenging his family and becomes a recurring ally in the floors ahead.
