Carl's Doomsday Scenario recap

By Matt Dinniman

Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.

In short (whole book)

On the third floor, the Over City, Carl becomes a Primal Compensated Anarchist and Donut a Former Child Actor, gaining Mordecai as her bound manager. A quest chain forces Carl into the orbit of Signet, an irresistible Elite NPC, and her tragic feud with Ringmaster Grimaldi, a parasitic vine ruling a corrupted circus; Carl ends it not with a bomb but by poisoning himself to bargain telepathically with the creature, freeing Signet. In a settlement further on, the murder of a goblin acquaintance pulls the party into a mystery implicating Miss Quill, the magistrate's gatekeeper, who is secretly draining her imprisoned husband, a soul-leech capacitor, to cast a ritual called The Final War. The party gains Katia, a doppelganger crawler escaping the Amazon leader Hekla's shadow. Killing Quill triggers the ritual anyway: escalating magical shockwaves wreck the region, destroy Donut's crown, and kill crawlers, but Carl seals the soul gem, earning a Doomsday Scenario achievement, and Katia's depot explosion smothers the final blast. The party escapes to the stairwell famous, hunted, and carrying a bounty, with Odette warning of the god Grull and Hekla's interest in Donut.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: the alien Borant Corporation collapsed every building on Earth and turned the planet into an eighteen-floor dungeon broadcast to the galaxy as entertainment. Carl, caught outside in his boxer shorts, entered with his ex-girlfriend's Persian show cat, Princess Donut, who gained human intelligence from an early reward and became the talking, spell-slinging leader of their two-crawler party. Guided by the gruff tutorial manager Mordecai, they survived the first floor's goblins and bosses, allied with the elderly survivors of the Meadow Lark care facility and their caregiver Imani, and became breakout stars of the broadcast. On the second floor Carl destroyed a rampaging Rage Elemental with a bomb-rigged vehicle in front of the whole universe, the pair charmed the galaxy on Odette's talk show, Carl earned the hatred of the Skull Empire's Prince Maestro by rescuing trapped crawlers on a rival program, and Donut tamed Mongo, a young dinosaur, as her pet. They descended to the third floor facing the crawl's next great milestone: every surviving crawler must choose a new race and class.

Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)

The training floors are over and the game begins in earnest with race and class selection. Donut, following Odette's advice, stays a Cat and takes the Former Child Actor class, which binds Mordecai to her as manager: he will now be summoned into any safe room the party enters, an indenture he greets by getting blind drunk. Carl chooses the mysterious Primal race, which leaves him looking human, and the Compensated Anarchist class, doubling down on his talent for explosives. The party enters the third floor, the Over City: a vast, open, ruined landscape dotted with NPC settlements, shops, and quests, overshadowed by a floor-wide storyline about the monster Scolopendra and its volcano. Heading for a larger settlement, they pick up their first quest and get an early taste of the floor's scripted theatrics, while Mordecai, when sober, explains how NPCs, Elites, and the deeper floors actually work.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

Investigating a wiped-out crawler party, Carl and Donut scout Grimaldi's Traveling Circus, a corrupted troupe of undead performers, and run straight into Tsarina Signet, an Elite NPC of overwhelming charisma whose living tattoos and supernatural allure nearly enslave Carl on the spot. Signet's quest cannot be refused: she compels the pair into her war against the circus. Carl survives a brutal fight against her mold lions, is forced to give a mercy killing to a parasite-riddled bear called Heather as Signet's price, and advances on the big top alongside her summoned elementals. Inside the tent, Carl comes face to face with Ringmaster Grimaldi, now a parasitic vine creature, and enacts Mordecai's plan: he poisons his own blood and feeds it to the vine rather than trying to out-fight it.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Rather than simply destroy Grimaldi, Carl reads a Wisp Armor spellbook to shield his mind, deliberately infects himself with the circus parasite, and bargains with the ringmaster telepathically, convincing him to release Signet from her banishment so the scripted family tragedy can end on different terms; along the way he commits to a future appearance on a program called Vengeance of the Daughter on the sixth floor. He returns to find Donut and Mongo have survived a night attack, Donut's hidden resurrection-like Cockroach ability having triggered. The party reaches a medium settlement, hits an absurd damage milestone that earns them their first fan boxes, and visits the Desperado Club for the first time, where Mordecai reconnects with old contacts and the pair learn how the club's underworld works.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

Shopping in the club's Silk Road market arms Carl with hobgoblin explosives. The party finds the goblin GumGum murdered in an alley, and the trail of clues, dead city elves, and undead Krasue points toward the settlement's magistrate, Featherfall, and the magistrate's severe gatekeeper, Miss Quill, who refuses all access. Carl provokes her with theatrical evidence-dumping while the pair work the mystery. A television appearance goes catastrophically political: Carl publicly needles the Skull Empire, and the resulting off-world retaliation and counter-retaliation between empires leaves bystanders and royals dead, escalating his feud with the Maestro's family to something with real interstellar consequences. On the ground, a street brawl involving city guards, a pregnant dwarf, and a friendly NPC ends in fire and reprisals, hardening Carl's anger at how the dungeon grinds up its own people.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Katia Grim, a doppelganger crawler and friend of the Amazon leader Hekla, joins the party, struggling with a race that makes her remold her own body like clay; Carl gives her a shard of mirror he has carried since the first floor. The party bombs Miss Quill's offices, and with Quill dead Carl becomes magistrate by default, uncovering Featherfall's remains and, beneath the building, the truth: Quill's imprisoned undead husband Remex is a soul-leech capacitor, and Quill has been draining the town's souls through him to cast a ritual called The Final War. Killing her does not stop it. As Remex convulses, Carl earns a Doomsday Scenario, and escalating magical shockwaves sweep the region, first suppressing and then violently overloading enchanted gear, destroying Donut's crown and killing crawlers. Carl seals the soul gem in its glass case to contain the catastrophe, Katia detonates a weapons depot, and the party escapes down the stairwell as the floor tears itself apart behind them.

How does it end? (ending)

The book closes with the party escaping the third floor moments ahead of an apocalypse of Miss Quill's making. Her murder plot exposed, Quill is dead by Carl's dynamite, but the ritual she powered with her husband's stolen soul energy, The Final War, detonates anyway in a chain of magical shockwaves that disable and then violently overload enchanted items across the region, destroying Donut's crown and killing crawlers outright. Carl contains the catastrophe by sealing the leaking soul gem inside its glass case, gaining the book's namesake achievement, a Doomsday Scenario, and Katia detonates a weapons depot as the party, Carl once again without pants, reaches the stairwell. An epilogue reveals the aftermath: the depot blast smothered the final and worst shockwave, saving thousands of NPCs and crawlers, and the resulting rewards were so extreme that Borant spent its one season veto to cancel most of them. Carl and Donut are now on the crawl's leaderboard. Odette warns them about the war god Grull, about Hekla's designs on recruiting Donut, and about the bounty their fame has put on their heads. Katia remains with the party, Mordecai remains their manager, and the fourth floor waits below.
