Chasmfall recap

Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.

In short (whole book)

Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu prepare for a Chasm expedition whose stakes include a lost weapon capable of separating a soulcrafter from their soul home. Once inside, they gather rare materials, survive rival factions, and discover that the House of the Lost has prolonged the opening. Their search eventually brings them to the Scepter of Separation as greater powers tear apart the final ruins. Theo reaches ruler tier, but collateral damage shatters Nauda's soul home. Senka unexpectedly claims the scepter, reveals that her damaged behavior concealed lucid awareness and considerable power, and partly repairs Nauda. An authority then activates the weapon on Senka, triggering her intended countereffect before they disappear into the falls as it explodes. Theo's ancient enemy escapes the vault disaster, but the Lost house's leader proves able to oppose him. Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu return to Norro Yorthin with rewards, while Nauda's recovery, Senka's fate, Fiyu's missing relative, and an expanding interworld conflict remain unresolved.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Theo returned from Earth to the Nine Worlds in a younger body but without the power he possessed in his earlier life. Drawing on old experience, he began rebuilding a defensive soul home and traveled with Nauda and Fiyu. Nauda is a Tatian soulcrafter whose path centers on natural materials, a staff, and wards. Fiyu is an Ichil light soulcrafter with unusually sensitive senses, soul-silver bracers, and plans for stronger bodily and defensive construction. Their companion Senka is an erratic dependent whose abilities are difficult to judge. The group has ties to House Blacksilver in Norro Yorthin and to Navim, an Arbai stone shaper and scholar recovering from a grave injury. As the new volume begins, Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu are preparing to enter the Chasm of Lamentations, hoping to strengthen their soulcrafting while relying on Theo's knowledge of the Nine Worlds.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu begin by harvesting dangerous plants in an Athali forest, earning resources for the months of preparation ahead. Back in Norro Yorthin, House Blacksilver warns that their three Chasm invitations make them targets. The house first asks them to surrender those invitations to stronger members, then agrees to support their preparations when they refuse. Theo strengthens the gravity-focused portions of his soul home, Nauda acquires a surge stalk that can reinforce her construction, and Fiyu develops a barrier wall while planning a corporeal floor. A visit to Arbai provides materials and aid from Navim, now an archcrafter. During a harvest, a demon incursion creates a titan that only the weakened master of the School of Emerald Indulgence can destroy with assistance. The master later tells Theo that the Chasm is a drifting fragmentary realm rather than part of a familiar world, and that unknown weir keys may reach other such places. Fiyu finds dark lattice for an armament protecting her senses, while Nauda rejects an immediate but unsuitable armament. By the end of the visit, House Blacksilver has made clear that the trio must enter the Chasm with its expedition if they want its backing.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Competition for Chasm access turns violent when a continent-scale northern movement attacks a House Blacksilver harvest. Theo releases a gravity singularity inside a cavern, killing one enemy ruler and forcing another to retreat, but the technique cannot distinguish friend from foe. House Blacksilver then explains the deeper stakes: an ancient Scepter of Separation was lost after being removed from a Chasm vault. Because it can temporarily unbind a soul home even across large differences in power, multiple factions see it as a route to political supremacy. Nauda decides she cannot enter the coming crisis at her current tier. With Theo's advice and protection built from personally resonant materials, she survives the dangerous transition and becomes a ruler. Fiyu obtains supplies in Ichil but receives no word from her relative, then gains a light-shielding mask completed by Navim. After final training and equipment checks, the trio enters the Chasm with House Blacksilver. They harvest flowers that protect their soul-home doors from distortions and witness the white river erase a falling chariot. Senka inexplicably appears, survives immersion in that same river, and joins them. Avoiding a battle among factions, the group descends toward the Chasm's interior.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

Inside the Chasm, Theo, Nauda, Fiyu, and Senka explore poisonous riverside tunnels with protective breathing gear. They recover several rare materials, including a mist heart suited to Fiyu and dangerous substances that Nauda stores for later. Theo still lacks the central material he wants for his own design, so he presses deeper along the river. Fiyu and Theo combine their senses to survey the terrain and choose an intact building on a dark island as their next major objective. At a valuable shore, three Asplendat Movement rulers confront the party. Theo and Nauda create a surge from the lethal river that kills two attackers. Homes survives by clinging to a rope, and Nauda prevents Fiyu from cutting it before the group pulls him to safety. In return, Homes provides the crucial explanation for why the expedition has exceeded its expected duration: the House of the Lost has bound the Chasm boundary open. No one can leave until that effect ends. With more Asplendat forces approaching, Theo's group must continue toward the island while trapped inside a realm whose ordinary time limit no longer protects them.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

The party reaches the island's triangular building, which Fiyu cannot sense through. Matan, an authority of the House of Burning Leaves, tries to force them to open its protected door. Tithes defeats him, then takes Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu captive for the same purpose. The lock requires fine control that authorities cannot provide, but the trio lacks enough combined kante. Tithes confines them for days and demands that they strengthen themselves, intending to claim the Scepter of Separation for his father. While they work, Fiyu asks Theo and then Nauda about becoming life mates. Both decline, and the second proposal leaves Nauda hurt, though the three remain companions. Before the lock can be completed, Matan attacks again. Tithes breaks the building free and rides it downriver, drawing Matan away and ending the captivity. The trio travels under Fiyu's concealment through evidence of battles between strongholds and reaches the final ruins. Dan, Jan, and Karcheval of House Blacksilver provide shelter but warn that the routes ahead are under attack. Senka rejoins the group. Rather than enter the central battle, the travelers choose the western route toward the waterfalls and the lost scepter, as Vistul appears at the final vault.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

The opening of the final vault destroys much of the central ruins through a folding of reality. Theo recognizes his old enemy, apparently unchanged after a century, escaping the trap and effortlessly killing an opposing stronghold. Theo concludes that this enemy is exploiting links among worlds, while the House of the Lost is working against him. Under House Blacksilver's cover, Theo, Nauda, Fiyu, and Senka withdraw toward the waterfalls and the fallen Scepter of Separation. An opposing force reaches the search area first. During the confrontation, Theo completes a hazardous crucible ascension and becomes a ruler, then drives most enemies through the Chasm boundary with gravity. Two authorities arrive to fight over the scepter, and their power shatters Nauda's soul home. Theo saves Fiyu from a collapsing cliff instead of taking the weapon. Senka claims it, displays concealed lucidity and power, and partly reverses Nauda's damage. She explains that she is a broken remnant of her former self and warns that Theo's old enemy is pursuing an interworld plan. An authority then activates the scepter on Senka, setting off her intended countereffect and suffering harm in return. She takes him into the falls, where both vanish as the weapon explodes. The Lost house's leader draws Theo's enemy away in battle, allowing Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu to escape. House Blacksilver returns them to Norro Yorthin and rewards them, but Nauda's recovery is uncertain and wider reprisals are gathering.

How does it end? (ending)

Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu escape the Chasm and return to Norro Yorthin under House Blacksilver's protection. Theo is now a ruler and receives an esoteric chisel as his reward, but his wounds are not fully resolved. Nauda's soul home remains shattered despite Senka's partial repair, and House Blacksilver can promise only to investigate possible restorative materials. Fiyu is physically in the best condition of the three, yet remains shaken and still has no contact with her relative. An authority activates the Scepter of Separation on Senka, triggering her intended countereffect and harming him. Senka takes him into the falls, and the weapon explodes as they vanish, leaving her survival unknown. Before disappearing, she warns that Theo's old enemy is exploiting links among Earth, the Nine Worlds, and fragmentary realms. The head of the House of the Lost demonstrates that this enemy can be challenged, although that house's aims remain unclear. House Blacksilver rewards the trio but expects reprisals and further factional tension. The immediate expedition is over, while Nauda's recovery, Senka's origin and whereabouts, Theo's enemy, and the wider interworld struggle remain open.
