Tala comes to Alefast as a newly Refined mage and joins a waning-defense unit responsible for dangerous hidden containment cells. She helps reseal several prisons, most notably trapping a deathless nullifier in her claimed iron at the cost of severe magical and likely soul strain. Training, the city keeper's guidance, and Rain's companionship move her toward Paragon while she learns to perceive and briefly travel through the magical dimension. She also discovers that her growing power is eroding Kit. A keeperling awakened by Lynn's mageling identifies Kit as a devourling, leading Tala to test whether Kit can safely be soulbound and unmoored. Kit proves sapient, individual, and able to consume linked spaces, then chooses the bond. Tala and Kit reject indiscriminate consumption and agree on a guarded shared identity, though the physical outcome is not confirmed. Elsewhere, several nonhuman threats begin moving against humanity.

Previously: Tala is an established mage whose continuing circle includes Terry, her creature companion, and Kit, a named storage space. Lynn, Cazor, Ingrit, Jevin, Holly, Simon, and Petra are also known figures from her earlier journey.

Tala runs to Alefast after completing iron training with Cazor, hoping to find work and further instruction. The city's leading Paragon explains that the region's increasing beast attacks come from ancient hidden containment sites whose seals are beginning to deteriorate. He recommends public service as a way for Tala to seek an enduring purpose suited to an immortal life. At the refined training hall, Tala demonstrates restoration, dissolution, gravity, void, iron, and her changing soulbound weapon. Her abilities are formidable, but a veteran martial instructor exposes gaps in her technique and mobility. Terry is accepted as her flockmate and combat partner rather than a pet. Four units initially offer places, and Tala is ultimately assigned to a small unit led by a married pair. Its members specialize in rapidly formed threads, magical edges, glass, healing, and stone. Tala also arranges a broad program of instruction in divided attention, aura control, temperature, breath weapons, and refined-level combat. She enters the city's defense structure with clear strengths, substantial training needs, and an expectation of long assignments beyond the walls.

Tala begins wall duty immediately and kills a refined cyclops, though the fight shows why she must improve fine control and movement. Her unit shares a meal inside Kit, where Petra, Simon, and their family live. Simon's measurements later show that the defenders can use Kit as limited overnight shelter. The unit then accompanies a cell-maintenance Paragon to a folded prison. Its captive spreads influence through stories and can transfer his life through the strongest conceptual connection if killed, so the defenders must hold him without creating meaningful ties. Tala sees his links through void sight and blocks his attempt to connect with her by combining void defenses and iron. When he turns invisible and charges the exit, she braces the passage with gravity, iron, and a wire net while her companions restrain him and capture his owl. The seal repair continues with the prisoner alive and contained. Tala's new defense appears to strengthen her existential stability, but its effect on her sense of connection has not yet been fully tested.

After the first cell is resealed, Tala learns that her iron-and-void defense partially isolates her from existence and can leave her disoriented. A second prison's approach magnifies fear and recklessness, causing that defense to turn Tala's isolation into panic. She abandons it for field use. The new prisoner has nullified death, injury, and apparently his own humanity. He wants sovereignty so he can end existence, and his power erases attacks and changes outside Tala's asserted aura. Tala protects her withdrawing unit from concealed stone weapons, then claims iron within his blood through Flo. Because his own nullification prevents him from expelling it, she can encase and restrain him long enough for the team to close the cell. Resealing severs Tala from the soulbound iron trapped inside him, tearing away an extreme amount of power and causing likely soul strain. He remains imprisoned, and healers expect Tala to recover, but she is ordered to rest and begin soul-resilience work. One injured defender survives with reconstructed legs. During leave, Tala considers bringing gateless builders such as Brandon into Kit.

While recovering, Tala brings Brandon and his father into Kit, where Simon recruits the father as a research assistant. The household prepares to restart a white-metal apparatus and watches Io, a submerged automaton that may only be dormant. Alefast's city keeper explains that city stones collect the shared power and will of their people. He also teaches that Paragon advancement depends on aligning an immortal soul with a lived, enduring mentality, and gives Tala a demanding method for increasing magical density. Tala begins direct soul-resilience exercises. Back on duty, her unit enters a prison holding a sleeping god-beast whose nightmare projections adapt their attacks to individual defenses. The prepared killbox collapses under a much larger horde than expected. Terry is wounded, the stone specialist falls from overextension, and the defenders are forced into a close final stand while the Paragon finishes. Tala uses her remaining siege orbs to open a retreat, Terry clears the route, and the cell closes behind her. The mission succeeds, though the unit concludes that future maintenance there needs much greater Paragon support. After two hundred days of defense work, Tala takes a break and leaves for Banfast with Rain.

On the road to Banfast, Tala and Rain help a caravan that has survived repeated burnwolf attacks. A great sapient wolf explains that the assault is a trial of both the pack and the travelers. Rain uses his knowledge of the northern wolves' pact with humanity to end the encounter without further fighting. Tala then works to combine mundane sight, mage sight, and void sight into a coherent model of magical position. The revised perception reveals an urgent problem: Tala's stronger magic is slowly eroding Kit's weaker natural pathways. It also suggests that gravity could move her along the magical dimension. With Ingrit arranging specialist supervision, Tala sets a return pull toward ordinary reality and moves stoneward. Physical vision disappears outside the superficial layer, but she returns safely, proving the method. She learns that time differs by magical depth and that unbound travel carries severe risks. The successful test gives Tala a new field of research, while Kit's long-term survival becomes a pressing reason to understand dimensional beings and soulbonding.

A longer stoneward journey lets Tala see distant city stones and the paths of creatures moving through the magical dimension. One power-draining creature attacks during her return, and her iron proves able to catch it where ordinary defenses cannot. Holly later examines Tala's new perception, while Rain helps her recognize both the limits of that perception and the lasting value of companionship. Lynn and her mageling travel with Tala and Rain to Alefast as recordings of Tala's battles spread. There, the mageling buys a dormant bear artifact. When awakened, it identifies itself as a sapient keeperling from the ordered void, but its involuntary magic creates hostile reciprocal connections. With the mageling's consent, it removes that part of its nature and is allowed to remain under Lynn's supervision. The keeperling identifies Kit as a devourling and explains that their kinds can communicate through their magic. Tala's new understanding of void advances her toward Paragon. Holly then revises her mental and void-sight inscriptions, giving her manageable threefold perception. Ingrit and a storage specialist request a meeting about whether sapient Kit can be safely bonded.

Tala learns that Kit's doorway is only an interface and that the sanctum can move occupants without a fixed threshold. Ingrit, Simon, and a storage specialist devise tests for sapience, individuality, and consumption. Kit passes all three. It consumes a failing dimensional hold and incorporates the linked space, proving that expansion is intrinsic rather than borrowed. The experts conclude that soulbonding and unmooring should preserve future growth and may stabilize Kit against the damage caused by Tala's stronger magic. Kit chooses the bond. During the merging process, Tala rejects possible identities built around indiscriminate devouring. She and Kit instead define a shared identity that protects what belongs to them and permits consuming enemies and useful resources, not innocents. The intended bond would allow rapid portals, transport, and battlefield support, but its physical completion is not confirmed. Lynn and her mageling remain responsible for the altered keeperling, while work inside Kit continues and Io remains unresolved. The closing views widen to multiple threats: predators destroy travelers and attack a floating city, the House of the Turbulent Ocean captures humans, miners awaken an undead tide, and a canine power prepares a warned Pact test against a human city nearing its end.

Kit's tests confirm that it is a sapient, unique devourling whose intrinsic magic can consume and incorporate linked spaces. Because Tala's stronger magic is slowly damaging Kit, the pair choose a supervised soulbond and unmooring. During the emerging bond, they reject identities based on indiscriminate consumption and settle on a shared principle of defending what is theirs and devouring enemies or rightful resources. The physical completion of the process is not confirmed. Tala remains an established Alefast defender, still pursuing a Paragon path after surviving severe soul strain and learning limited stoneward travel. Rain and Terry remain trusted companions, while Alat continues as her internal co-operator. Lynn and her mageling return to Banfast responsible for an altered keeperling. Simon, Petra, Brandon, and Brandon's father continue their work inside Kit, and Io remains under watch. Alefast's containment burden is unresolved. Beyond it, predators attack travelers and settlements, the House of the Turbulent Ocean captures humans, an undead tide is disturbed, and a Pact force prepares to test a human city after warning it.
