In short (whole book)

John enters the Millennium Meeting while marked as a dragon slayer and leads Candle Scholar Tower into a contest to save a sealed, dying world. There he discovers that the Black Blood Cult is preparing a devil invasion and that ordinary mana cannot stop its corruption. He turns the Eternal Flame into a widespread faith whose shrines cure the curse and defend communities, placing him in conflict with local gods and rival contestants. The dying God of Medicine accepts an Eternal Flame bond, creating the Eternal Pantheon and revealing that faithful dead can return through the valley. John gathers further divine allies, survives a trap built by the enemy elven mage, and races to defend Three Rivers. He seals a completed Abyssal portal by taking Kalmaric into the Abyss, destroys his body, and is reborn at the valley altar. Ellie gains authority over sea, rivers, and storms, halts the leviathans, and joins the pantheon with John's bull companion. The world survives, but the returning contestants learn that the Radiant Empire and ancient mage families have declared war.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: John became a Tower Master of Candle Scholar Tower and the bearer of the Eternal Flame after killing a dragon. Ellie remains his partner and a diviner, while Rabia has merged with the valley's world spirit and stabilized their home. Rabia protects the valley, manages its mana, and extends roots through the void toward nearby worlds. John's established allies include Katrine, a Tower engineer, Captain Worrell, the young explorer Ben, and Ferdie, his powerful bull companion.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

So far this book: A chosen warrior of the Resplendent Empire demands John's submission to a dragon ruler. John defeats him, rejects the empire's claim, and agrees to lead Candle Scholar Tower at the Millennium Meeting, where a hostile empire team is also expected. The dragon mark on John's soul means retaliation may reach anyone close to him. At home, John and Rabia develop a self-repairing void ship protected by the Eternal Flame. Captain Worrell, Katrine, the Tower engineer, and Ben depart on its first short expedition. Rabia also reveals that the old system was encoded in people summoned from Earth and can be restored for Eternal Flame believers under her administration. John authorizes a limited rollout and begins a formal study of faith. Ellie supports that decision while warning of a divined threat involving a creature without mana. At the Millennium venue, the team receives Kevin, a self-aware guide puppet, and meets the Equinox Circle's dwarf leader. The Resplendent Empire delegation then arrives and fixes its attention on John.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

So far this book: John counters the Resplendent Empire's intimidation and presents Candle Scholar Tower's Millennium gift, a living void beast contained in a pocket world. The year-long contest sends ten-person teams into a sealed world where they must identify and solve its hidden catastrophe. Candle Scholar Tower chooses a western coastal entry and establishes a concealed base near Three Rivers. The team builds local recruitment and merchant fronts, while John investigates alone under a civilian cover. He works at Captain Cairn's inn and meets Captain Beckett and Grom, sailors with direct experience of leviathans. After killing a flesh-eating, brimstone-scented creature, John begins connecting local violence to a deeper corruption. He also studies the local gods. The sea goddess answers offerings through a priest and enforces bargains, but the temple carries little true faith. John concludes that these gods hold portions of the world's authority through transactional exchange rather than devotion. The actual world-ending threat remains unidentified, and John stays in Three Rivers to pursue both the monster and the divine system.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

So far this book: Traveling with two medical priests, John discovers that the Black Blood Cult manufactures a contagious curse that turns victims into violent monsters. Ordinary mana feeds the corruption, but faith-infused Eternal Flame destroys it. Candle Scholar Tower concludes that devils are preparing to invade and agrees to spread the Eternal Flame as a practical defense available to ordinary people. John spends much of the following year establishing shrines, leaving sparks, and learning that freely chosen selflessness can kindle the flame without his direct design. A permanent temple heals visitors and later destroys a bandit assault while sparing civilians. Its success draws the established gods, whose demand for submission John rejects. Their conflicting powers leave them unable to defeat him, though the war god nearly destroys the city before John and an allied Supreme Mage stop the attack. As the faith expands, rival contest teams begin aiding the cult. John infiltrates a cult gathering and hears a dragonkin representative propose an alliance among cultists, rival competitors, and gods to capture or destroy the Eternal Flame.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

So far this book: John exposes an enemy-family elven Supreme Mage working with the cult. The elf escapes through an Abyssal portal, but John closes it and destroys the greater devil left behind. Meanwhile, Captain Beckett and Grom have transformed their former pirate crew into the Blue Flame Navy, spreading Eternal Flame lanterns and defending merchants. This provokes the sea goddess, who threatens Three Rivers and the surrounding shipping. John then answers a siege at the temple city, where cultists, devils, and hostile off-world mages are trying to stop production of the Blackblood cure. Eternal Flame priests turn the battle, and Candle Scholar Tower reinforcements disrupt another portal ritual. The dying God of Medicine reveals that he sacrificed his own power to obtain the cure and that local divine authority is constrained by equivalent exchange with the world spirit. Rather than absorb him, John offers an Eternal Flame bond. The god survives and joins him, unlocking the Eternal Pantheon. Rabia then reports that thousands of faithful people killed in battle have reappeared alive at the valley shrine. Their rebirth is real, but its limits remain unknown.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

So far this book: John recruits Bortel by helping the swamp god defeat the deity consuming his territory. Bortel regains poison and decay authority and joins the Eternal Pantheon. John next kills the goddess of murder, purifies her divinity into a death domain, and frees her captives. He learns that faithful people can be reconstructed in the valley after death, although repeated rapid deaths damage the soul. With sea trade around Three Rivers collapsing, John seeks more divine allies before the devils' final offensive. The God of Scholars promises to join after victory but will not risk his hidden community yet. The Air Goddess conditionally accepts John's aid, traps the god who stole her secrets-hearing authority, and joins the pantheon once it is restored. John also defeats the God of Greed and refines his power into abundance. When John approaches the shy Forest Goddess, the elven Supreme Mage springs a larger trap. World-linked seeds and divine authority seal John together with hostile gods in a cage that suppresses every captive, while the elf departs to open Abyssal portals across the continent.

Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)

So far this book: Inside the suppressive cage, John relies on his physical and magical mastery to kill hostile gods as the remaining captives turn on one another. His uncontrolled mana eventually burns through the cage's restrictions and absorbs several domains. The world spirit intervenes, objecting that John is consuming its gods. John gains release by promising not to absorb any more and by showing that continued confinement could allow outside forces to destroy the realm. He heals the damaged forest, and the Forest Goddess voluntarily joins his pantheon. Three Rivers is already under a coordinated assault by devils and leviathans, while enemy mages prepare a permanent Abyssal portal. John summons Ellie and his bull companion from the valley. Ellie confronts the sea goddess, and the bull intercepts the archdevil commander. The elven Supreme Mage nevertheless completes the portal and sacrifices allies to summon Kalmaric, a true dragon. John tackles the partly manifested dragon back into the Abyss, allowing the world spirit to seal the invasion route behind them. The contest world is protected from the portal, but John is stranded among the dragon and converging archdevils.

Story so far - through chapter 46 (this book)

John turns the converging archdevils against Kalmaric, then destroys his own body in a massive blast amid the dragon and devil forces. The Eternal Flame restores his awareness and rebuilds him at the valley altar, revealing the valley as a divine kingdom that can manifest wherever he is. Kalmaric's fate after the explosion is not established. John returns to Three Rivers to find that Ellie has absorbed the sea goddess's authority. She orders the leviathans away from ships, ending the immediate maritime threat. John's bull companion kills the archdevil commander, and the remaining devils are hunted down. The world spirit formally recognizes Ellie as Lady of Storms and Goddess of the Sea, with authority over water, rivers, and storms. She joins the Eternal Pantheon, as does the bull companion in the form of a god-beast. Over the next year, John and Ellie spread the Eternal Flame across the preserved realm, and the God of Scholars fulfills his earlier promise to join. When the contest portals reopen, the party returns to the Millennium Palace and learns that the Radiant Empire and allied ancient mage families have declared war.

How does it end? (ending)

John closes the completed Abyssal portal by forcing the summoned dragon Kalmaric back through it and following her into the Abyss. He destroys his own body in a blast amid the dragon and converging devils, then returns through the valley altar as the Eternal Flame rebuilds him. Kalmaric's survival is unknown. While he is gone, Ellie takes the sea goddess's authority and ends the leviathan attacks, and John's bull companion kills the archdevil commander. The world spirit recognizes Ellie as Lady of Storms and Goddess of the Sea, while the bull becomes a god-beast; both join the Eternal Pantheon. During the following year, John and Ellie spread the Eternal Flame across the preserved contest world, and the God of Scholars fulfills his promise to join them. The contest party eventually returns to the Millennium Palace, where it learns that the Radiant Empire and allied ancient mage families have declared war. Rabia continues administering the faith-linked system and the valley's rebirth process, whose long-term limits remain unsettled.
