Convergence

By Craig Alanson

Convergence opens as Kazimir Wolfe, a fugitive wizard on the run since his aunt Sarah's unsolved murder six years earlier, narrowly survives a roadside ambush in Indiana and flees west in a stolen truck, believing the return of magic to the world would be catastrophic. He is joined by Duke, a talking dog channeling the spirit of Marduk, an ancient Babylonian wizard drawn to guide him, while an FBI agent, a set of impostors, and an unnamed security team's operatives all close in on his trail. After relocating to a mobile home to stay hidden, Kaz is found by two armed knights sent forward in time to protect a wizard: Macarius from fourth-century Egypt and Giselle from fifth-century Gaul, the latter sent by her own mistress to help defend against the Convergence, a coming collision with the Netherworld. With his small, mismatched group growing and magic visibly strengthening around him, Kaz has to work out what is drawing so much attention to him, and why now.
