Kazimir Wolfe (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A fugitive wizard with little formal training, Kazimir has spent six years evading law enforcement and armed hunters since Sarah was killed. After surviving an ambush in Indiana, he continues west with limited money, a damaged vehicle, and a conviction that the return of magic could destroy the world he knows.
Duke (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A recently bereaved dog compelled to wait for Kazimir outside a Missouri diner. Duke needs protection after his owner dies, and the unexplained command driving him to find and warn Kazimir suggests that their meeting is not accidental.
Sarah (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The woman Kazimir knew as his aunt and guardian. Sarah taught him little about magic before she was murdered. Her death marks the beginning of his long life as a wanted fugitive.
Marduk (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
An ancient Babylonian wizard spirit who speaks through Duke. Marduk says Kazimir's power drew him across time and space so that he could offer training and guidance. He and Duke are separate presences sharing the dog's body after Marduk entered that host by accident.
Michelle Singer (Supporting)
Also known as Special Agent Singer
First appears in chapter 3
An FBI special agent who has encountered Kazimir's case before. Michelle follows forensic evidence from the Indiana ambush and recognizes signs that one armed group tried to seize him while another intervened, giving her reasons to look beyond his fugitive status.
Judith Robinson (Minor)
Also known as Judith Thompson, Judy
First appears in chapter 3
Duke's elderly owner, found dead at her home after Duke seeks out Kazimir. Her will identifies her as Judith Thompson and sets out arrangements for Duke's future care, forcing Kazimir to decide what responsibility he will take for the newly orphaned dog.
Janice Kozlowski (Minor)
First appears in chapter 3
One of the two people Judith names in her will to care for Duke after her death. Janice shares that intended responsibility with her husband, Jerry, although Duke has already attached himself to Kazimir before the arrangement can take effect.
Jerry Kozlowski (Minor)
First appears in chapter 3
One of the two people Judith names in her will to assume responsibility for Duke. Jerry and his wife, Janice, are designated to receive money for the dog's care, even as Duke insists that his place is now with Kazimir.
Mikeare Henderson (Supporting)
Also known as Mike
First appears in chapter 4
A former New Zealand Army major serving as a Team Draco field operative. Mikeare investigates why another covert team broke surveillance orders and died while protecting Kazimir, a question that may place him among Kazimir's unknown allies rather than his hunters.
Zoraida Martinez (Supporting)
Also known as Isabel
First appears in chapter 4
A former Mexican Federal Police intelligence analyst and Mikeare Henderson's partner in Team Draco. Zoraida helps redirect their covert investigation toward both Kazimir and the hostile organization pursuing him after a friendly team dies in the Indiana ambush.
Team Cobra (Minor)
First appears in chapter 4
The two-person covert unit whose Yukon interrupts the Indiana attempt to capture Kazimir. Both members die in the firefight after disregarding surveillance-only instructions, and their choice to defend him provides the first evidence that an organized faction wants him alive and free.
Macarius (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
A Medjay knight sent from Egypt in the year 321 to find and protect a wizard. Armed, disciplined, and wholly unfamiliar with modern life, Macarius accepts Kazimir as the likely subject of his mission even though neither man knows who sent him or why he arrived in this era.
Giselle (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 8
A young knight and former wizard's apprentice sent from Gaul in 497. Giselle arrives exhausted but heavily armed, explaining that her mistress dispatched her to help wizards resist the Convergence, a feared collision between Earth and the Nether.
Joshua Ellington Fordham (Minor)
Also known as Josh
First appears in chapter 12
The sole survivor among three armed men who attack Kazimir and Giselle in a rainy alley. Giselle spares Joshua after killing his companions, but he sees their distinctive RV and records part of its plate, leaving him able to identify the travelers later.
Slicky Boy (Minor)
First appears in chapter 18
A violent restaurant patron traveling with several armed guards and a blonde companion whom he abuses. Macarius challenges his conduct despite Kazimir's need for secrecy, provoking a threat that places the group in immediate danger.
Alicia Roberts (Minor)
First appears in chapter 21
Kazimir's former girlfriend from a Colorado ski resort. She disappears shortly after he flees men he believes are investigators and is later found murdered. Her fate convinces him that the people hunting him will target anyone who becomes close to him.
R. Philip Fleming (Minor)
First appears in chapter 23
A wealthy Asheville artifact broker who operates Foster Art and Antiquities after leaving wealth management. Kazimir suspects Fleming deals in stolen objects and holds the ancient amulet Marduk urgently wants recovered, but the broker's security makes a direct burglary dangerous.
Aziberahatahumundi (Supporting)
Also known as Azib
First appears in chapter 27
A djinn from the Nether released when Kazimir applies magic to Marduk's amulet. Aziberahatahumundi recognizes Marduk's name and reacts with fear before withdrawing into the object, leaving his history, intentions, and connection to the wizard spirit uncertain.
Annie (Minor)
First appears in chapter 30
The leader directing Team Draco as the Order prepares an armed trap at the Ohio mound. Annie authorizes Mikeare and Zoraida to use deadly force and accept the risk of public exposure in order to reach and protect Kazimir.

An armed organization that blocks both approaches to the Ohio mound and deploys a large force to seize Kazimir alive.
