Stranded south of the dwarven realm, Felix and his allies follow the Gloaming Way to Pax Rell and discover that the Hierocracy has conquered Vessilia's homeland. They unite displaced dragoons, restore Harn's mobility, survive an ancient fortress guardian, and infiltrate the occupied citadel. Felix kills the Hieri and breaks the oath network, while Vessilia frees her father and wins the dragoons without surrendering her dragon bond. A much larger force led by Felix's divinely controlled sister then attacks. Felix reaches Master Tier, uses two Crown of Elysium fragments to reclaim Pax Rell's seat, and helps defeat the manifested god of light and order. The moon-bound gods take his sister and consume the wounded god. Felix remains king of Pax Rell and resolves to gather the other Unbound for war against the gods and the Ruin.

Previously: Felix Nevarre, an Earth-born Unbound, became Autark of Nagast and gathered a company that includes his bonded companion Pit, Vessilia Dayne, Evie Aren, Beef, Archie, Harn, and four Eidolons. After the conflict beneath the Vault of Nine Kings, Felix's party was displaced into dwarven low roads. Harn lost both legs, Pit began an unstable evolution, and Archie remained focused on an array that might return him to Earth. Felix also learned that the Hierocracy's devastating chosen warrior, Imara, is his sister and is controlled by the Pathless. Elder Throne remains under Felix's allies, including Karys Taiv, Atar V'as, Alistair, Zara Cyrene, and Isla. The wider struggle now involves hostile gods, other Unbound, and the approaching Ruin.

Felix's party is stranded far south of its intended route and cannot pass openly through the dwarven fortress town hunting him. Vessilia proposes traveling to her homeland, Pax Rell, where Felix may also be able to restore a damaged Shadowgate. The group slips around dwarven defenses and tunnels toward the surface, but supplies run low and Harn's wounds remain resistant to healing. Felix studies how to bring his shaping powers into harmony while Pit's evolution causes growing pain through their bond. A pack of powerful subterranean predators attacks the camp. Felix combines several shaping abilities into a new transcendent fire power and wakes in time to kill the largest attackers, but the victory leaves the group badly hurt and forced to flee deeper into the caverns.

While the party recovers underground, Felix discovers an ancient shrine and questions the god of change. The god claims that Imara serves as the Pathless's vessel, that other gods may seek Unbound vessels of their own, and that the Ruin threatens everything. It urges Felix to reach Master Tier and pursue power on a divine scale. The shrine provides a route to the surface, but the god then interferes directly in Pit's stalled evolution. Felix enters Pit's damaged core space to protect him. Pit rejects the god's offered paths, draws on stored divine power without submitting to it, and completes a self-chosen evolution as a Primordial Storm Tyrant. He emerges vastly larger, with two pairs of wings and formidable storm abilities, while both he and Felix gain new opportunities to evolve their skills.

The party reaches the surface and follows the Gloaming Way toward Pax Rell. Felix removes the Pathless infection from Archie's wound and begins training Archie and Beef more systematically, hoping to prepare the other Unbound for the larger conflict. Beef reaches Adept Tier in his principal construction skill and evolves it into Entropic Paradigm, allowing him to use power released by death and decay. Pit tests his restored wings and new storm form, while Beef's undead companion gathers stronger materials for an evolution of her own. Reports place hostile dwarven forces moving south, adding urgency to the journey. Near the remains of an old dragoon fortress, Pit and Beef's companion spot stealthy people who appear to be raiders, and the party moves to investigate.

In Elder Throne, Karys learns that Nagast personnel and Naga allies have been captured by a provincial ruler. Alistair is chosen to lead a delegation, while Atar stays behind as explosions and hidden attackers reveal a sabotage campaign inside the city. Zara manages political dissent among the Cantus, and Isla joins the investigation. On the Gloaming Way, Felix's party discovers that the supposed raiders support starving civilians inside an abandoned dragoon fortress. Vessilia opens a hidden route into the complex, where evidence complicates the accepted history of dragons and dragoons. When armed intruders breach the fortress, Felix's group incapacitates them and discovers that they are displaced dragoons under an illusion. Vessilia finds relatives among them, but their leaders regard her voluntary dragon bond as a threat. Felix halts the confrontation long enough to demand an explanation.

The refugees explain that the Hierocracy conquered Pax Rell, imprisoned Vessilia's father, and forced many surviving dragoons into binding oaths. Felix commits to helping reclaim the territory in exchange for access to the citadel, where a Shadowgate may offer a route home. The resistance lacks equipment and unity, so Harn restores the old fortress forge while Felix trains Beef and Archie. In Elder Throne, Atar and Isla trace the bomb makers through stolen metal and concealed sigildry, learning that the former Protector's Guild elder directs the operation. Elsewhere, Alistair's diplomatic mission becomes a hostage confrontation when the provincial ruler displays Nagast prisoners and demands military support. Felix cannot address either distant crisis until he reaches Pax Rell. His first attempt to form the tenth pillar needed for Master Tier fails violently, leaving him searching for a new path to advancement.

Felix's party earns the refugees' trust by gathering food, treating poison, improving the fortress, and producing arms. A hidden artifact proves to be Felix's second fragment of the Crown of Elysium. Felix also evolves his sigildry abilities and uses them to connect Harn's arcanite prosthetic legs, restoring the forge master's mobility. Vessilia refuses demands that she abandon her dragon bond for political support. She and her dragon instead summon a Green Wilds spirit to bargain for the power needed for his evolution. At the same time, a hostile dragoon captain breaks into the fortress undercroft and removes ancient dragon-grown cores. The theft activates deadly defenses and awakens a powerful force beneath the fortress. The Green Wilds spirit condemns the old dragoon betrayal, changes the terms of its bargain, and demands that Vessilia's group prove itself in an immediate test of survival.

The awakened Janus Hydra tears apart the fortress and rebuilds itself from stone and roots while refugees flee. Pit holds the guardian back, Beef shields civilians, and Archie discovers that he can carry others through solid material, evolving his movement skill into Primeval Drift. Vessilia, Evie, and Vessilia's dragon battle the Green Wilds spirit until they secure a bargain rather than killing it. Vessilia and her dragon accept power in exchange for part of their future significance. Felix abandons another failed pillar attempt to join the Hydra fight, traces the construct's connection to the fortress, and learns that a dragon core powers it. After further skill evolution, he extracts and destroys that core. The Hydra and its lesser bodies collapse, but an imprisoned dragon spirit attacks Felix. Pit restrains it long enough for Felix to consume it, and the resulting inherited memory leaves Felix unconscious.

Atar and Isla expose Cantus conspirators and gain their first actionable lead in the Elder Throne sabotage network. Alistair remains imprisoned with Nagast's soldiers, but the provincial knight commander offers to help remove her failing ruler. At the fortress, Vessilia and her dragon recover from their bargain. Beef completes Adept Tier, and his undead companion evolves into a graven aegis able to fight independently or armor him. Vessilia's dragon becomes a Dawn Drake and publicly joins her cause, strengthening her challenge to anti-dragon tradition. Vessilia then leads roughly three hundred fighters toward Pax Rell under Felix's concealment. Archie agrees to join the assault despite instability in his uneven advancement. When the army finds Hierocracy forces preparing a public execution, Vessilia orders an intervention. The occupation force is destroyed, the prisoners are rescued, and the liberation campaign begins openly without allowing a warning to reach the capital.

The resistance enters Pax Rell through hidden passages and divides into three missions. Vessilia moves to rescue her father, the main force attacks the occupation troops, and Felix pursues Mivun Tal, the Grandmaster Hieri controlling the oath network. Archie helps breach the Duke's cell, while Vessilia challenges the oath-bound dragoon captain rather than slaughter compelled soldiers. Felix kills the Hieri's elite guard but is nearly crushed by authority drawn from the territory's seals and oaths. The Hieri admits that the Hierocracy summoned the Unbound as potential vessels for the Pathless and intends to use the Ruin to remake the world. Felix and Vessilia both begin dangerous skill evolutions. Vessilia completes Galebound Glory and defeats the captain without killing him. Felix's distant allies voluntarily supply the power his own evolution lacks. He then dismantles the Hieri's borrowed authority, destroys the central oath bundle, and kills him, causing the local coercive network to fail.

With Mivun Tal dead, the rebels finish clearing the citadel and the compelled dragoons regain control of themselves. Vessilia has their captain stand down, and her father resumes authority over Pax Rell. The victory does not provide an escape: Pit finds the shrine desecrated, its Shadowgate broken, and its barrier inaccessible. The Pathless responds by sending Imara and thousands of empowered Inquisitors toward the territory. In Nagast, Atar and Isla capture a saboteur and identify a lead tied to an alchemical laboratory. Alistair uses delegated territorial law to force the provincial ruler into a trial, kills him, and leaves the cooperative knight commander in authority. As the new invasion nears Pax Rell, Vessilia and her father prepare defenders outside the walls. Felix withstands interference from a hostile goddess and finally completes his tenth pillar, reaching Master Tier just before the enemy army arrives.

Vessilia's defenders, Beef's risen troops, Pit, and the allied dragoons delay the divinely strengthened invasion while Felix attacks the shrine barrier. He refuses the imprisoned goddess's offer to become her vessel, completes his Master Tier tempering, and uses his two Crown fragments to contest Pax Rell's true seal. After consuming the shrine's bindings, he removes its barrier and reclaims the territorial seat, becoming king of Pax Rell. The city's ancient defenses turn the battle. Felix then confronts Imara, breaks her direct link to the god of light and order, and wounds the god when it manifests. Before he can finish the fight or recover his sister, the five moon-bound gods take them both. They consume the wounded god, strengthen themselves, and offer Imara an unknown bargain as her memories return. Felix retains Pax Rell and resolves to build an army of Unbound to rescue her and oppose the gods and the Ruin. Alistair secures a treaty for Nagast, while Atar survives the seal attack as a skeleton sustained by white flame.

Felix holds Pax Rell after reclaiming its true seat, while Vessilia's father survives but no longer rules the territory. Vessilia, Pit, Evie, Beef, Archie, Harn, and the allied dragoons survive the campaign. Felix severs the god's direct control of his sister, but the five moon-bound gods abduct her and consume the god of light and order, gaining strength as their chains weaken. Her memories continue returning, and they offer her an unknown bargain. Felix has two of the three Crown of Elysium fragments and plans to recruit the remaining Unbound to rescue her and oppose both the gods and the still-unexplained Ruin. In Nagast, Karys and Isla recover after the seal attack, while Atar remains alive as a skeleton sustained by white flame. Alistair kills the coercive provincial ruler and concludes a treaty that recognizes the Naga folk within Nagast and commits provincial troops and supplies to the alliance. The sabotage organizer's fate, Atar's altered state, the third Crown fragment, and Archie's possible route to Earth remain unresolved.
