In short (whole book)
John Sutton tries to prevent his own mana from making the world's mana lethally pure while cultivating Golden Grace, a wheat that can feed people and cleanse blighted land. An undead conspiracy led by Kythov converges on the First Mage's Door beneath the valley as John and Ellie also persuade the plains tribes to replace raiding with trade. Kythov attacks the valley and uses the Door in a ritual designed to seize John's eternal body. Ellie breaks the ritual but is poisoned and cursed, and the apocalypse begins when John's doom count reaches its limit. Kythov possesses John, but John turns a spiritual-sacrifice spell against him, consuming Kythov's soul and healing Ellie. John, Ellie, Thomas, Katrine, Haver, and the specter people then use class-aligned mana and the Door's woven power to build a rough filter that makes ambient mana survivable again. The immediate extinction threat is halted, but the filter requires deployment, Golden Grace must be scaled, and surviving secret-society leaders remain at large.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: John Sutton came from another homeland and carried the power and responsibilities of the Eternal Flame through years of war. Thomas served as his adjutant, and Katrine became a close wartime ally whom he regards as a non-blood sister. John later established Sutton Farm with Ellie, a storm witch who became his partner in its work and defense. Their household also includes the young trainee Ben and Ferdie, an unusually powerful bull. Haver, the Wolf King, is an ally in the surrounding valley. John has already confronted legendary undead connected to Earl Vosik. He also fought the sage-level necromancer Kythov but failed to destroy him permanently. More recently, Sven, a Fairford ally, was killed by a winged and clawed undead creature. John survived that conflict, but the wider danger did not end with it. As the new volume begins, the farm remains his chosen home, even as the consequences of his exceptional mana and the enemies tied to his past continue to threaten the people around him.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
John and Ellie plant experimental wheat intended to process mana, but the crop requires further generations and cannot be accelerated continuously without dangerous mutations. John's doom count rises from 95 to 96 despite his efforts to avoid using his true mana. Shadow Tower's sentient plant administrator studies the pattern and concludes that John's unusual Mana Breath purifies the world's fixed supply of mana. As purity rises, ambient mana will eventually become toxic to life, even though John expects to survive. The administrator restores portal access between Sutton Farm and Shadow Tower, allowing John and Ellie to study enchanting without spending his dangerous power. They begin repairing John's damaged bracer, with Ellie working toward a moldable metal while John learns runecrafting. The religious order separately investigates Sven's death, and Haver reports organized undead activity in the mountains. John refuses to disclose the ruin involved but reveals that the slain legendary undead appeared as Earl Vosik. Ellie's first liquid-steel experiment fails because of her storm-aspected mana. During a controlled exchange, John blends her mana without fully purifying it. Repeated shared meditation slightly improves her control and, for the first time through a repeatable method, removes one of John's doom points.
Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)
The plant administrator determines that John's unconscious rejection of the world drives his purification effect. Working carefully with Ellie's mana imitates belonging and returns attributed mana to the universal pool, but the method may offset his worsening leakage for only about six months. Ellie masters enough neutral mana to make liquid steel and repairs the physical damage to John's bracer. Former Empress Katrine arrives in Fairford after a coup in Allera. The legendary wind mage regards John as family and reports famine, blocked food shipments, and noble control of the army. She identifies the infinity symbol found by Ellie as the mark of Infinitum. The organization has three operational factions under Kythov the Eyeless, a sage-level necromancer whom John once failed to kill permanently. High Marshal Helbright recognizes John as the Eternal Flame and agrees to keep that identity hidden. Refugees are pouring from Allera into Lepiera, and John warns that Infinitum may use contaminated supplies, illness, or drugs against them. At the same time, undead move from the mountains into the valley. John commits to a prepared expedition with Katrine, Haver, local Holy Knights, and wolf scouts. Ellie insists on joining because her spirits can locate threats and the danger reaches their home.
Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)
John completes the bracer's rune repair, gains Astral Insight by probing the plane of water, and learns powerful water magic while continuing to avoid spells fueled by his own mana. His latest wheat generation may grow on mana-blighted land and help restore it. Visiting plains traders report that commerce is improving their tribes' lives, though many warriors still favor raiding. John and Ellie agree to argue for trade at a tribal assembly, and Ferdie demonstrates his strength against one of the visitors. Before that journey, John leads an undead hunt with Ellie, Katrine, Haver, Holy Knights, wolves, and plains warriors. The expedition enters caves beneath the valley, destroys uncontrolled zombies, and is surrounded by organized forces. Their controller, the Bonecarver, serves Infinitum's skull-marked faction. He says the group once worked for Earl Vosik, now answers to Kythov, and is gathering around a supposed Door left by the first mage. The Bonecarver attacks with massed undead and a soul-powered chimera. Ellie summons Sigvald, a lightning bird familiar carried in her tattoo. His anti-dark-mana attacks open the enemy defenses. John and Katrine kill the Bonecarver, and John destroys the skull containing a fragment of Kythov's spirit. The linked undead turn to ash, though the act costs John another doom point.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
After the cave battle, John, Ellie, and Rebea build a filtered thresher and harvest the successful mana-consuming wheat. Completing the quest removes fifteen doom points, but new quests require John to feed nations and reclaim forbidden land. The crop is named Golden Grace, and forty-one bags of seed are prepared for expansion. Ben turns twelve, receives Frost Edge, and continues training in both blade work and farm business. John and Ellie travel with the plains tribes to the Skystone Assembly. They propose replacing raiding with trade and using the tribes' riding and martial skills for protection. Jigur challenges Ellie to defend the alliance's right to speak, and Ellie defeats her. Goa then attacks, aided by an unidentified wise woman who illegally binds Ellie. John rescues and heals Ellie, accuses the assembly leadership of permitting interference, and invokes an oath that places their authority at stake. John defeats three Khans, then withstands Goa and two other wise women without killing them. He also defeats the masked Moon Guardian. Togine, a former High Priestess and sage-level guardian of the Old Way, intervenes and accepts John's charges. She removes Corrigine as High Priestess, detains the implicated wise women for investigation, and endorses the move from raiding to trade. The Moon Guardian is revealed as Kuyuk and relinquishes his mask.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
John plants Golden Grace in the poisoned Forbidden Fields with help from a plains sage and Ferdie. Within a day, the crop begins absorbing the chaotic mana and returning a thinner, more uniform mixture. John provides enough seed for additional fields, offering the tribes a possible source of food and reclaimed land while arranging to keep a potentially dangerous hermit away from Kythov's Door scheme. Back in the valley, Ben sees the village leader meeting a hooded operative who says the undead operation is nearly ready. The leader attacks and wounds Ben. John, Ellie, and Thomas follow the trail to a hidden underground settlement, where a masked priest has kept Ben alive through a natural class awakening. The underground people explain that they saved and raised him after mana poisoning before his birth, then placed him in Ellie's path when he could not share their concealment. Ben awakens as a Shadow Singer, a path brought from beyond the First Mage's Door. His abilities combine shadow movement, mana-shaping song, evasion, and his earlier blade training, and two watchers are assigned to teach him. The underground priest warns that Kythov plans to slaughter the valley and use the deaths and the Door's aura to create a permanent body. John decides to evacuate everyone into Shadow Tower, then return for Kythov.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
John sends Ellie and Ben to prepare Sutton Farm's animals and cellar portal while he warns Fairford. Undead already surround the village, and Kythov's plan requires the valley's deaths. John organizes an immediate evacuation, while Katrine and Thomas prepare to intercept legendary enemy leaders. Fairford's people break through toward the farm under attacks from zombies and ghouls. Twelve villagers ignite blue flame to hold the rear, sacrificing their remaining lives for temporary combat power. At Sutton Farm, Ferdie destroys an abomination, while Ellie, Ben, and Sigvald defend the approaches. Most civilians pass through the portal into Shadow Tower. Ben is sent inside to protect them, but Ferdie refuses to abandon the farm and Ellie stays with John after the portal is sealed. John and Katrine confront the Master of the Skull, a legendary necromancer drawing Kythov's mana through artifacts. John breaks his cage but spends enough personal power to gain another doom point. The concealed Master of the Blade then nearly ambushes Ellie. John wounds him, but both enemy leaders escape through one-use teleportation artifacts, as does the Master of the Coil after facing Thomas. Their artifacts appear linked to Kythov's location. With the undead still multiplying, John decides to pursue the masters underground.
Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)
John, Ellie, Thomas, and Katrine force their way toward the last open cavern entrance. Haver returns with his wolves, helps divert the horde, and joins them. Specter guides from the hidden underground people lead the party through Kythov's fortress, where the Master of the Coil, Master of the Skull, and Master of the Blade guard successive approaches. The Master of the Coil and his cultists transform into regenerative abominations powered by the fortress. John burns through the first seal, leaving Katrine to contain them. At the second, Haver and his wolves hold the Master of the Skull and an undead storm worm. John destroys the remaining seals while conserving what little safe mana use he has left, then enters a maze of golems powered by extremely pure woven mana. His physical strength begins disturbing his thoughts, but Ellie restores his control through their shared meditation. A recording from the first mage identifies the site as both a repository of class knowledge and a fixed dimensional route to the mage's home tower. It warns that mana above the world's limit will force a life-destroying world upgrade. John and Ellie reach the ritual chamber and find Kythov as an eyeless sage-level spirit drawing woven power from the Door. His defenses have delayed the party long enough for the ritual to advance.
Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)
John attacks Kythov while Ellie, Sigvald, and the specters destroy cultists and search for the ritual's nexus. Kythov uses spirits, curses, corpse beetles, and the Door's woven mana to resist direct destruction. The Master of the Blade ambushes and poisons Ellie, but Thomas kills him. Ellie spends her remaining power to break the ritual. Kythov's blood curse enters her body, and John's doom count reaches 100, making the universal mana pool lethal. With the seals gone, Katrine advances to sage level and kills the Master of the Coil. Kythov reveals that his real objective is John's indestructible body. The centuries-old body-stealer possesses John, but John binds him to his soul and invokes a reconstructed spiritual-sacrifice spell. Because John's own soul cannot be consumed, the spell destroys Kythov instead, removes the curse, and heals Ellie. John returns with Kythov permanently dead. The failed apocalypse quest leaves less than four hours before pure mana destroys life. John, Ellie, Katrine, Haver, and Thomas separate mana into class-aligned strands. With the specters' song and the dimensional Door's woven mana, they create an enchantment that converts pure ambient mana back into attributed mana. The rough, manually operated filter halts the immediate catastrophe but must be moved above ground. John and Ellie affirm their relationship, and John promises future aid to the specter people.
How does it end? (ending)
Ellie destroys Kythov's ritual nexus but is left dying from the Master of the Blade's poison and Kythov's blood curse as John's doom count reaches 100 and the world's mana becomes lethally pure. Thomas kills the Master of the Blade, while Katrine advances to sage level and kills the Master of the Coil. Kythov possesses John in an attempt to claim his eternal body. John binds the necromancer to his own soul and invokes a reconstructed spiritual-sacrifice spell, causing Kythov to be consumed instead. The effect heals Ellie, and John returns with Kythov permanently dead. With less than four hours remaining, John, Ellie, Thomas, Katrine, and Haver separate mana into class-aligned strands. The specter people's song helps them combine those strands with the First Mage's Door's woven mana, creating a filter that converts deadly pure mana into attributed mana. The machine works, but it is rough, manual, and still needs to be moved above ground. John and Ellie affirm their relationship. Ben, Ferdie, Sigvald, and the valley evacuees survive where established. Golden Grace still needs wider cultivation, two secret-society leaders and the Master of the Skull remain unresolved, the Door and its archive remain dangerous, and John owes the specter people future aid.
