Dark Tower III characters

By Stephen King

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Roland Deschain (Protagonist)

Also known as The Gunslinger

Appears from the start

The last gunslinger of a fallen order, continuing his pursuit of the Dark Tower. He has drawn Eddie and Susannah into Mid-World and begun training them, but carries two incompatible memories of Jake: in one he allowed the boy to die, while in another Jake never entered Mid-World at all. The contradiction is damaging his sanity.

Eddie Dean (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A former heroin addict whom Roland drew from New York into Mid-World. Eddie has survived the struggle that freed him from his dependence and now travels with Roland and Susannah. His humor and practical instincts sit beside a developing aptitude for the gunslinger's discipline.

Susannah Dean (Protagonist)

Also known as Odetta Holmes, Detta Walker

Appears from the start

A woman drawn from 1964 New York whose divided personalities have recently joined as a new self, Susannah. She has lost both legs below the knees and travels in a wheelchair when terrain permits. Clear-minded and formidable, she is learning to use Roland's weapons as part of his small fellowship.

Jake Chambers (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A boy from 1977 New York who once accompanied Roland beneath the mountains of Mid-World. Roland sacrificed him to continue his pursuit of the Tower, but events later prevented the accident that first brought Jake into Roland's world. Jake is alive again and troubled by memories of a death that, in his present reality, never occurred.

Shardik (Antagonist)

Also known as The Great Bear

Appears from the start

A gigantic, ancient bear that attacks Roland's group near its territory. Metal components and a failing guidance system reveal that it is not an ordinary animal but a deteriorating guardian from Mid-World's technological past.

Calvin Tower (Minor)

First appears in chapter 2

The owner of a small Manhattan bookstore that Jake feels compelled to enter. He sells Jake two books whose images and words appear strangely connected to the boy's divided memories and to the world Jake is trying to reach.

Oy (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

A small, intelligent billy-bumbler, an animal of Mid-World with traits resembling a dog, raccoon, and badger. He attaches himself to Jake and can imitate fragments of human speech, quickly becoming the boy's devoted companion.

Aunt Talitha (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

The elderly leader of River Crossing, a settlement whose inhabitants remember the old customs and honor Roland as a gunslinger. She offers the travelers hospitality and entrusts Roland with a silver cross as they continue toward Lud.

Gasher (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 4

A diseased and violent member of Lud's Grays who ambushes the travelers near the city. He takes Jake captive and forces him through the ruined streets toward the underground territory of the Gray faction.

Andrew Quick (Antagonist)

Also known as The Tick-Tock Man

First appears in chapter 5

The charismatic and brutal leader of Lud's Grays, ruling from an underground refuge amid the failing machinery of the city. He prizes useful knowledge and treats prisoners as tools or entertainment.

Blaine the Mono (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 5

The vast artificial intelligence that controls Lud's monorail and much of the city's remaining machinery. Blaine presents himself as a talkative guide and demands riddles from Roland's group, but his power over the train makes every exchange a negotiation for survival.

Randall Flagg (Antagonist)

Also known as Richard Fannin

First appears in chapter 6

A mysterious man who finds the severely wounded Tick-Tock Man after Roland's group has left. He restores the outlaw enough to follow and recruits him for a larger purpose opposed to Roland.
