In short (whole book)

The Thaylen merchant Rysn is commissioned to lead an expedition to a forbidden, supposedly dead island wrapped in legend, to learn what secret it hides. She sails with a wary ship's crew and a guard of Radiants, including the Windrunner Lopen and the archer Cord, past natural hazards and stranger defenses. Breaching the island, they discover it conceals one of the Dawnshards, primal powers of Command older and more fundamental than the gods that shape the world. A member of the crew is revealed as a hidden guardian sworn to keep the secret buried and to stop them from exposing it, fearing the enemy god could seize it. In the crisis Lopen deepens his own oaths, and Rysn makes a fateful choice: she takes the Dawnshard into herself, becoming its new secret bearer and protector. The expedition survives and returns, and Rysn quietly carries one of the most dangerous powers in existence, aware that the enemy is searching for it.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Before this story: On the world of Roshar an ancient enemy has returned, and the god of hatred, Odium, wages war on humanity through immortal warriors and awakened armies. A coalition of nations, led by the Kholin family from the recovered mountain city of Urithiru, has begun to reunite the world and to restore the long-lost Knights Radiant, whose members again draw power from the great storms to fly, heal, and fight. The wealthy trading nation of Thaylenah, having survived a devastating assault, is a key part of that alliance. Amid these vast events, a young Thaylen merchant named Rysn, trained under a shrewd master trader and adjusting to life after an injury that cost her the use of her legs, keeps up her trade and cares for a rare, storm-fed pet. When a powerful patron seeks someone discreet and capable to investigate a forbidden island long shrouded in legend, Rysn's path turns from ordinary commerce toward a secret with consequences for the whole world.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Rysn is entrusted with leading an expedition to a distant, forbidden island that most believe is dead and cursed, in order to discover the truth hidden there. A ship is prepared and a crew assembled, including a guard of Knights Radiant among them the cheerful Windrunner Lopen and the Horneater archer Cord, to protect the venture from whatever waits at their destination. The voyage tests them with hard weather and the ship crew's uneasy superstitions about where they are bound, and Rysn must grow into command over sailors who did not choose her and who fear the island's reputation. As they draw closer, it becomes clear that the island is not simply abandoned but actively guarded, and that reaching whatever it conceals will demand more than seamanship. Strange signs and dangers gather around the approach.

Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)

The expedition breaks through the island's defenses and finds the secret at its heart: it shelters one of the Dawnshards, a primal power of Command older and more fundamental than the world's gods, capable of catastrophic misuse. A member of the crew is revealed as a hidden guardian sworn to keep that power buried, and it acts to prevent the travelers from exposing it, dreading that the enemy god could seize such a force. In the crisis the Windrunner Lopen speaks a deeper oath and grows stronger. Faced with letting the Dawnshard be lost or taken, Rysn chooses to accept it into herself, becoming its living vessel and secret keeper, a choice that transforms her and entangles her exotic pet in the island's mysteries. The travelers survive and sail home. Rysn returns changed, now the quiet guardian of one of the most dangerous powers in existence, aware that the enemy is hunting for precisely what she now carries.

How does it end? (ending)

The expedition reaches the guarded island and uncovers its true secret: it hides one of the Dawnshards, ancient powers of pure Command that predate even the world's gods and could reshape reality in the wrong hands. A trusted member of the crew is exposed as a guardian devoted to keeping that secret hidden, and it moves to stop the travelers from carrying the knowledge back, terrified that the enemy god Odium could claim such a power. In the confrontation the Windrunner Lopen speaks a further oath and comes into greater strength. Rather than let the Dawnshard be lost or seized, Rysn accepts it into herself, becoming its living vessel and secret keeper, a role that changes her forever and binds her exotic pet's fate to the island's mysteries as well. The expedition survives and sails home. Rysn returns transformed, now the quiet guardian of one of the most dangerous forces in the cosmos, understanding that the war against Odium has stakes far larger than any single kingdom, and that the enemy hunts for exactly what she now carries.
