Death World

By B. V. Larson

The fifth entry in Undying Mercenaries opens with McGill reconnecting with his family on leave, revealing that he has a daughter, Etta, from a prior relationship with Della, and arranging for his non-legion parents to meet her. Those plans are cut short when a homecoming ceremony for Legion Varus's first shipment from the newly won Machine World turns into a mass-casualty disaster: an out-of-control freighter crashes into the crowd, killing McGill along with his parents, who, as civilians, cannot be revived. Consumed by grief, McGill pushes his unit's pursuit of the unidentified attackers across a series of candidate star systems, eventually helping to locate a hidden, supposedly uninhabited world connected to the raid. When the pursuing ship comes under a sudden boarding attack as it moves to strike the planet, McGill and his squad must defend the ship, including the chamber holding its crew's only means of revival.
