A stolen titanium shipment and a lethal freighter crash send James McGill and Legion Varus to a concealed planet controlled by an intelligent plant collective. After plant organisms cripple Minotaur, the stranded legion fights for its revival system, follows the compromised trader Claver, and learns that rare nexus plants command the planetary life. McGill destroys the central Nexus, breaking the plants' control over cephalopod queens and prompting the cephalopods to withdraw. Varus retakes Minotaur and returns to Earth, where McGill discovers his parents survived and plans to meet Etta on Dust World. Claver then coerces him into a disguised attack on Central over the Galactic Key. McGill saves Winslade's revival record but removes his recent Key memories. Turov takes the Key and plans to revive a memory-stripped Claver as the scapegoat. Nagata cannot prove McGill's guilt and instead promotes him to junior adjunct for the coming cephalopod war.

Previously: James McGill serves as a repeatedly revived legionnaire in Legion Varus, while powerful officials compete for influence over him and his unit. The Machine World campaign brought Earth valuable titanium but left the cephalopod threat unresolved. McGill also carries a private family obligation. Della has confirmed that their young daughter Etta lives on Dust World, where a separate copy of Natasha is helping to care for her. McGill has never met Etta, and his parents hope to join him in doing so.

McGill returns to his parents' home after the Machine World campaign and tells them about Etta. Della agrees that the family may visit their daughter after a ceremony welcoming Earth's first titanium shipment. The event becomes a catastrophe when the freighter arrives without control, scatters burning cargo, and destroys the spaceport. McGill revives aboard Minotaur and is told that his parents died permanently with the other civilians. Evidence indicates that raiders boarded the freighter, stole much of its cargo, and left it on the course that caused the crash. Grief drives McGill into a lethal training match and into challenging command's plan to abandon one possible lead. He bargains with Galina Turov to search a binary system, where Minotaur finds a living planet concealed by falsified Galactic records. The legion prepares to attack a hidden installation there.

Minotaur attacks the suspected surface base, but acid-bearing organic pods attach to the ship and release plant-like boarders. McGill's troops defend Blue Deck and its revival equipment at heavy cost. Kivi, Leeson, and Anne Grant are among those killed, although one revival machine survives. The invasion force descends through the immense forest while Minotaur suffers catastrophic engine damage and stops responding. On the surface, Winslade commands the survivors, who possess only one revival unit and no secure route home. With Leeson awaiting revival, Graves temporarily places McGill over the platoon and joins the surface command in planning both reconnaissance and an eventual attempt to recover Minotaur.

The forest produces giant defenders that overrun the lifter's perimeter, and friendly defensive fire kills many legionnaires. Winslade manipulates the sole revival queue so Claver can be restored ahead of superior officers and repeatedly interrogated. Claver admits trading stolen titanium to the plant species and says its colony can seed a world, generate defensive organisms, and build spacecraft. After Winslade kills an enraged McGill, the next revival leaves McGill calmer. He persuades Anne to restore Tribune Drusus, who removes Winslade from command. Drusus extracts more information from Claver, then banishes the trader into the forest. As punishment and reconnaissance, McGill's squad must follow Claver, discover how he communicates with the planetary intelligence, and report back even though the lifter will leave without them.

Cut off from Legion systems, McGill's squad follows Claver through a forest that can deploy toxins and pod-grown defenders. The pursuit costs several lives and destroys their supplies. At a central plant structure, Claver identifies a Nexus as one of the rare brains coordinating the world-spanning biomass. He warns that attacking it could provoke a larger conflict, but McGill orders Sargon to breach it. Kivi then extracts Claver's translator, which communicates with the plants through organic fluids and scents. The squad contacts Graves, who reveals that Turov ordered their access blocked. Graves recovers them by directing missiles onto their position so they can be revived at the relocated lifter. With the translator secured, Legion Varus prepares to capture an alien transport intact and use it to reach the disabled Minotaur.

The attempted capture fails when acid-filled eggs destroy the alien craft. Graves executes Leeson for disobeying the order to preserve it, then the surviving troops fight their way back through a massed plant assault. McGill discovers that smaller spider-like organisms direct the giant attackers and breaks the assault by targeting those controllers. Turov responds to the planet's rapidly growing forces with a plan to destroy every known Nexus. Claver warns that this would cripple a sentient colony and later admits that he has summoned outside intervention to keep the regional war alive for trade. He also reveals that he is Old Silver. A cephalopod commander, Captain Torrent, arrives in orbit and threatens Varus if it attacks the nexus plants. Turov sends McGill, Claver, Natasha, Carlos, and Kivi to negotiate with the hidden central brain, while secretly ordering McGill to destroy it.

Claver leads the team to the central Nexus and begins a fluid-based contact ritual, but cephalopod troops ambush them. McGill attacks the Nexus despite Claver's warning and then kills Claver before detonating a plasma grenade among the surrounding cephalopods. After revival, McGill reports what Captain Torrent revealed during the confrontation: the plant collective controlled cephalopod reproduction by holding their rare queens on infected worlds. Destroying the central brain releases the cephalopods from that obligation. With the planet's coordinating intelligence gone, new pods cease growing and the mobile plant organisms begin to starve. Torrent withdraws his force. Legion Varus is left with one final military task on Death World - retaking Minotaur from the surviving plant infestation.

Four hundred legionnaires assault Minotaur while Winslade and the support personnel remain on the planet. The ship's closing Green Deck shield splits the boarding force, leaving only about one hundred troops inside. McGill uses his dwindling suit air to reach the interior and receives a concealed assignment to recover a dragon combat vehicle from Gold Deck. In its pilot harness he finds what appears to be Turov's body and takes the Galactic Key hidden on it. The Key lets him override the dragon's security. He drives to Blue Deck, where plant-altered human corpses attack with captured weapons and revival machines have been converted into pod-production systems. The living Turov then arrives with the troops who entered elsewhere, proving the body in the dragon was not hers. Specialists begin salvaging the compromised revival equipment, while Winslade arrests McGill over the Key.

McGill uses Turov's need for secrecy to negotiate his release and a promised promotion, then returns the Galactic Key to her. Legion Varus repairs Minotaur and departs for Earth. Anne ends her relationship with McGill, while Della agrees to take him to Dust World to meet Etta. At home, McGill learns that his parents survived because they left the spaceport ceremony before the freighter arrived. The family begins planning the trip together. Claver interrupts the reunion with claims that Turov is dead and Winslade has taken the Key. Because those claims remain unverified and Claver threatens McGill's family, McGill goes with him to Central while Della stays behind to protect his parents.

Claver recruits Jonathan Sloan to kill Winslade and uses projection technology to disguise Sloan as Claver while appearing as Winslade himself. The operation inside Central collapses into violence when Sloan attacks the disguised Claver and is killed by a guard. Claver finds the real Winslade behind his desk and uses the Galactic Key to disable Central's security systems. McGill prevents Winslade's permanent erasure, deleting only the recent memories that include knowledge of the Key. Turov is revealed to have been secretly revived. She takes the Key, kills Claver, and plans to revive him without his recent memories so altered evidence can make him responsible for the killings. Nagata later confronts McGill with surviving images, but the disguise device creates enough uncertainty to prevent an immediate case. Still seeking evidence against Turov, Nagata promotes McGill to junior adjunct and prepares him for a large Hegemony campaign against the cephalopods. McGill remains committed to visiting Etta, while the Key conspiracy and its political consequences remain open.

Legion Varus destroys Death World's central Nexus, causing the plant collective to fail and releasing the cephalopods from its control. The cephalopods withdraw, Varus retakes and repairs Minotaur, and the legion returns to Earth. McGill learns that his parents escaped the freighter disaster, and he and Della prepare to visit Etta on Dust World. Claver then draws McGill into a disguised assault inside Central. McGill preserves Winslade's revival data but deletes his recent memories of the Galactic Key. Turov, secretly revived, takes the Key, kills Claver, and intends to revive him without his recent memories so he can bear blame for the killings. Nagata remains suspicious of both McGill and Turov, but the disguise technology prevents a conclusive case. He promotes McGill to junior adjunct as Earth prepares a major campaign against the cephalopods. Turov's possession of the Key, the Central cover-up, Claver's planned altered revival, and McGill's promised family visit remain unresolved.
