In short (whole book)
Reunited in a corrupted Void Star realm, Zac and Ogras help Billy, Jemmy, Vi, Layara, and Iz Tayn defeat the Kantanu operation and close a Lost Plane gateway. Jemmy survives by converting much of her realm into portable subspace, but Zac returns to Earth with severe foundation damage. During his recovery he prepares the Atwood Empire for war, integrates living and undead populations, secures a wary alliance with the Undead Empire, and learns that his Eos bloodline is both valuable and politically dangerous. Ogras leads a costly Million Gates expedition while Zac develops a quantum-core blueprint suited to his human and Draugr states. Emily, Jowl, and other seal holders bring Zac's Ultum cycle to eight of nine. After completing both hidden Gates of Rebirth trials, Zac gains two more middle-mastery Dao branches. The book ends with the Kantanu war, Kenzie's captivity, Catheya's safety, and the final Ultum member unresolved as Zac and Ogras enter the Perennial Vastness.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Zac established the Atwood Empire on an integrated Earth and advanced along an unusual path divided between living and Draugr forms. His allies include his missing demon companion Ogras, his disciple Emily, the Atwood commanders Joanna and Velary, his spectral attendant Triv, and Catheya, a Draugr connected to the Undead Empire. Zac is entangled with ancient inheritances linked to Ultum and the Left Imperial Palace, while his family remains divided and powerful outside forces shape the frontier. Ogras vanished into a spatial vortex, leaving his fate uncertain. Zac's cultivation, the security of Earth, and the search for answers about the older powers behind the system remain connected to conflicts far beyond his home world.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
Zac finds Ogras alive inside an isolated dimensional-seed realm within the Void Star. Ogras has survived there for years, gained new shadow abilities, and taken control of dangerous Lost Plane specters through Shadewar. He also reports that Billy is alive and allied with the realm's spirit. Zac reveals that Kenzie is alive but held through Leandra's connection to the Six Profundity Empire, and Ogras promises to help recover her. Their reunion also shows that both men hold different Ultum-linked inheritance quests. With Voidgate researcher Vi, they ambush a Kantanu force searching the realm. Zac kills its heart-cursed commander, but the surrounding energy grows sickly. They learn that Jemmy, the sentient realm spirit, has absorbed corruption and may die with everyone inside if her core collapses. Meanwhile Billy's refuge is under siege by thousands of invaders. Zac reaches peak E-grade before Jemmy opens a narrow spatial breach through the enemy army, allowing Zac, Ogras, and Vi to enter the surrounded stronghold.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
Inside Billy's fort, the defenders devise a plan to convert most of Jemmy's realm into a portable subspace. The transformation cannot safely begin until a Lost Plane breach at the ruined goblin capital is closed. Layara, a powerful Voidgate cultivator, organizes the escape plan while Pretty and the remaining fighters buy time against the Kantanu siege. Zac and Ogras agree to strike the corruption source. Iz Tayn arrives while pursuing Zac, revealing herself as another Flame Bearer. Her independent golem Kvalk tears through the battlefield, and she ultimately postpones her confrontation with Zac to join the larger mission. Iz Tayn explains that her family has reinforced an unremovable tracking mark on Zac and that outside powers are already watching the inheritance struggle. Elsewhere, Emily survives a collapsing Radiant Court trial. She completes a seasonal axe array, receives a quest to become a Lightbringer of Ultum, and chooses to remain with her expedition rather than return home. Zac, Ogras, and Iz Tayn recover together before advancing on the corrupted ruins.
Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)
Zac, Ogras, and Iz Tayn infiltrate the ruined capital and find the Lost Plane gateway beneath a lake of corruptive water. Zac discovers that his Voidheart can refine some of the taint into insight, but his attempt to destroy the gateway draws out the Qriz’Ul King, a vast runic guardian with the gateway fragment embedded in its ninth eye. Iz Tayn commits to the battle, helping Ogras close the breach while Zac holds the guardian away from the lake. Unable to break its defenses normally, Zac combines creation and oblivion into a chaos attack. The blast destroys the guardian and devastates the area, but shatters Zac's pathways, damages his foundation and soul cultivation, and costs him years of life. The group escapes as Jemmy's realm is converted. A Vigil leader then explains that the final Left Imperial Palace seal piece will be awarded through contribution in a war due in about four years, with young contenders from powerful factions expected to participate. Jemmy's residents are rescued, Vi returns safely to Voidgate, Billy leaves to honor his pact with Southern Mountain, and Zac and Ogras return to Earth.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
Back on Earth, Zac begins the long repair of his ruined foundation and warns the Atwood Empire that a major war is four years away. A third Left Imperial Palace fragment is located in the Ensolus ruins, but Zac delays claiming it until he can safely withstand another epiphany. He commits immense resources to conscription, fleet building, and a force of millions, while Ogras takes command of the coming Million Gates expedition. Exploring Ensolus with Joanna, Velary, and Ruger triggers Zac's larger Ultum task: assemble a cycle of nine seal bearers before the deadline. The displayed count does not match the bearers he knows, leaving the cycle's membership unclear. Zac also creates the paired Gates of Rebirth, dangerous life and death trials that grant titles and Dao insight. He advances his Branch of the War Axe to middle mastery. The Atwood shipyard completes Starflash, a fast expedition destroyer bound to Ogras. Its first voyage proves the empire now has a practical cosmic warship, though its advanced systems demand specialized crews and heavy resources.
Story so far - through chapter 50 (this book)
A survey of Emerald Eye brings Zac and Ogras into contact with a moon-spanning moss consciousness awakened by Integration. Earth's increasing life and death attunements destabilize it. Zac promises a future solution, but the organism imposes a five-year deadline by planting a mental-energy crystal in his soul aperture. The crystal threatens him while also accelerating his soul cultivation. Zac develops new methods to draw duality insight from stored Lost Plane water and begins Void Vajra Sublimation, a life-attuned body-tempering path that gives him greater control over a hidden bloodline node. When Catheya returns with an Undead Empire delegation, Zac attends through a remote body and detects concealed monarchs. The negotiations reveal that his Draugr bloodline is Eos, a lost branch with major political value. The Empire offers resources, a Perennial Vastness token, and support in exchange for cooperation over the Left Imperial Palace. Zac accepts a guarded, non-binding alliance. His public undead identity, Arcaz Black, is confirmed to the delegation, while rival undead factions and an unknown Abyssal Lake site make his new status dangerous.
Story so far - through chapter 57 (this book)
Zac publicly announces the approaching Kantanu war and formalizes the integration of Elysium's revenants, the Mavai, and the Ra'un into the Atwood Empire. He defines attacks on undead citizens as terrorism and suppresses the first organized revolt through forces led by Ogras. Rubot cautiously accepts the new order, while Ibtep is invited to join the Million Gates expedition and Henry Marshall advises Zac on covert political control. Ogras departs with a mixed expeditionary force. Elsewhere, the captive sword cultivator Thea resists the Hallowed Mother's corruptive elixir and refuses to kill children. Three Virtues intervenes, frees her, and recruits her as a guide for an off-world pilgrimage, though the elixir's effects remain. Iz Tayn returns to help Zac evaluate his cultivation. She warns that his intended life and death constitutions cannot simply merge into one conventional core. More urgently, her fire wisp discovers a hidden death-conversion curse in the bloodline essence supplied by the Undead Empire. She removes it, leaving Zac with a usable but time-limited tonic and strong evidence that his allies attempted to eliminate his living half.
Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)
Zac tests his improved human constitution in a full spar with Iz Tayn. He manages to cut her, but her combined transformations disrupt his technique and leave him unconscious. Before departing, she learns of his nine-bearer Ultum requirement and promises life-attuned resources to balance the Undead Empire's death-aligned support. Zac consumes the cleansed Eos essence, then sacrifices a depleted death treasure to force open two hidden nodes. One permits dangerous physical overdrive, while the other resists curses and tracking effects. He conceals the upgrade from the Undead Empire and begins drawing concrete core blueprints, though life and death still refuse to harmonize. Ogras's Million Gates force enters an unstable realm shard in search of opportunities. At the same time, an outside palace candidate sends adjudicators toward Zekia, and Emily is revealed alive but stranded in a damaged escape pod after a spatial storm destroyed her advance vessel. The expedition advances toward dangerous ruins while Emily faces isolation without a known rescue route.
Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)
Separate struggles across Million Gates bring more Ultum bearers into view. A realm singer awakens with the Seal of the Mercurial Court. Emily survives months alone, expands her escape pod, develops a mobile flying-axe array, captures an infiltrator vessel, and eventually returns to Earth. She holds two Radiant Court seal pieces and accepts a frontline command while preparing for hegemony. Ogras's expedition suffers seven deaths but gains allies and inheritance progress. It rescues Jowl, a failing technocrat navigator and Far Sea Court bearer, from pirates and forces him to guide a raid. Catheya escapes an Imperial commander she believes may kill her for her seal, leaving her safety unresolved. The returned Mercurial bearer raises Zac's Ultum cycle to eight of nine. After thousands of failed designs, Zac learns that conventional fusion of pure life and death is impossible for him. He instead designs a quantum core with alternating human and Draugr states, each stabilized through the void of the opposite aspect. He postpones forming it until the Perennial Vastness. Joanna returns without a seal, but Zac gives her an Indomitable Court marker and points her toward the battlefield.
Story so far - through chapter 77 (this book)
Zac enters the Gates of Rebirth seeking their deepest reward. He clears the six public layers of the Gate of Life, then reaches a hidden seventh trial whose inverted death patterns suit his Draugr side. At its center he rejects an imposed life-death fusion and advances the Branch of the Kalpataru to middle mastery. The trial transfers him to the Gate of Death and removes most memories of his first passage, but his soul cultivation preserves enough for him to recover them. Completing the second hidden trial advances the Branch of the Pale Seal to middle mastery. Zac emerges with both secret gates cleared, the Gates of Rebirth title, and more than 100,000 total attributes. Carl returns with a Radiant Court fragment, and Zac contracts Jowl as an Ultum follower and Endless Storm navigator. Velary repairs her soul-bloodline blockage, while Ogras gains progress from the Umbra heritage. A warning from Laz Temzul deepens concern about Undead Empire politics and Catheya's safety. The Kantanu remain delayed, not defeated. Zac, Ogras, Joanna, Velary, and Emily prepare to leave, and Zac and Ogras activate their tokens to enter the Perennial Vastness.
How does it end? (ending)
Zac finishes his immediate cultivation preparations with three Dao branches at middle mastery and a quantum-core design tailored to his alternating human and Draugr states. He postpones forming that core until the Perennial Vastness. His Ultum cycle stands at eight of nine, with the last bearer unidentified. Ogras returns from Million Gates stronger but with Shadewar emitting more dangerous curse energy. Emily is home with two Radiant Court seal pieces and a frontline command, Joanna has an Indomitable Court lead, Velary has repaired her blocked soul bloodline, Carl holds a Radiant Court fragment, and Jowl is bound to Zac as a follower and navigator. Catheya's safety remains uncertain amid Undead Empire factional maneuvering. Kenzie is still held through Leandra's connection to the Six Profundity Empire, and the Kantanu invasion remains delayed rather than stopped. Zac, Ogras, Joanna, Velary, and Emily assemble for departure. Zac and Ogras activate their tokens and enter the Perennial Vastness.
