In short (whole book)
Zac and Ogras enter the Perennial Vastness, where they reunite with Catheya and gather mana for Zac's unprecedented life-death cosmic core. He survives a dual soul breakthrough, claims the Calamity Core, uncovers a First People inheritance, and gains Cosmic Forge and the Void Engine. Kruta joins him in the Stand of Saeward, where they ruin Saeward's sacrificial ritual and Zac kills Imperial princess Valsa Planur. Sendor protects Zac's identity, and Kruta claims the ninth seal in Zac's Ultum cycle. Esmeralda contracts to join the palace venture, while Catheya and Zac commit to a shared future. Zac finally combines the Calamity Core, Warstone, and Void Engine into a quantum life-death core, survives tribulation with help from Leandra's hidden array, and ascends to hegemony as an Evolutionary Precursor and Inexorable Apostle. The Left Imperial Palace, the wider war, the Hollow Court, and Kenzie's rescue remain ahead.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Zac, also known to the Undead Empire as Arcaz Umbrizi, is a human-Draugr cultivator building a path that joins life, death, conflict, and the void. He has gathered allies and obligations across several factions while protecting Earth and preparing for a wider multiversal war. Ogras remains his demon companion and covert adviser. Catheya is a Draugr cultivator close to him, but her relationship with the Undead Empire is politically fraught. Zac's wider circle includes his disciple Emily, the fire cultivator Iz Tayn, and Thea, whose karmic link to him involves a Buddhist Sangha and Three Virtues. His mother Leandra remains absent but has left concealment measures around him, while Kenzie still needs to be rescued. Zac also carries Ultum seals tied to the Left Imperial Palace, an approaching contest whose bearers and rival factions are scattered across the multiverse. He plans to seek the resources and controlled environment of the Perennial Vastness to form a cosmic core strong enough for the dangers ahead.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
Zac and Ogras use separate tokens to enter the time-dilated Perennial Vastness, where Zac is assigned a newly created guide named Null. The realm rewards visitors with mana, which strengthens both their protection and the environment used for cosmic-core formation. Zac receives the maximum starting allotment for his unusual blueprint, then claims a hazardous summit manor on Mount Illumination despite its identity-eroding Buddhist influence. He reaches Vastness City and rushes to help Catheya against the Grand Firmament Coalition, only to learn that she had staged her apparent weakness to draw profitable attacks. His illegal intervention costs substantial mana but also establishes a deterrent. Ogras reveals that he has already arrived, reuniting the three companions. Catheya explains that her flight from the Undead Empire was likely caused by manipulation rather than a genuine decision to betray it. With rival Undead Empire factions and the coalition both posing risks, the trio turns toward missions, formal duels, and dangerous zones as faster ways to accumulate mana.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Zac exploits the apparent flaws in his life-death blueprint to win formal duels and blueprint bounties until an anonymous announcement exposes the tactic. A Radiant Temple threadwinder then reveals that he knows Zac and Arcaz Umbrizi are the same person. The threadwinder is also an Ultum seal bearer who expects to die in the Left Imperial Palace, and he bargains for limited help from Zac in exchange for tools that can identify unusual opportunities. Zac, Ogras, and Catheya take their first joint mission in Sinner's Lament, an orange zone filled with corruption, resentment wraiths, and recurring lightning purges. Catheya develops a compass from local crystals to locate sinner mounds, while Ogras uses Shadewar and captured spirits to manage the surrounding threats. At the first mound, lightning reveals a mass of tainted corpses around a core and suppression stake. Zac destroys the core, and the group defeats the corpse construct that follows. They now have a repeatable method for finding and clearing further mounds, though the zone remains costly and dangerous.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
The trio destroys twenty-two sinner mounds and completes the mission profitably. Zac then attempts the third layer of Void Vajra Sublimation in the Keys of Ascension. The hidden heart trial destroys his body, but he preserves his identity, purifies the scattered remains, and rebuilds himself with a stronger life-attuned constitution and Dao heart. Back on Mount Illumination, he discovers that a ghost monastery may conceal a providence treasure, but its Samsara pressure is still too strong to cross safely. An Imperial observer later identifies Zac as a Flame Bearer and reports him to a princess pursuing Left Imperial Palace fate. Unaware of the full investigation, Zac enters the Calamity to attempt his next soul breakthrough. After surviving its violent life-death storms, he reaches a drifting mountain and constructs a concealed chamber where both energies are balanced. Rather than follow a single-attunement route, he commits to forming separate evolutionary and inexorable soul structures as the basis of a unified life-death soul.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
Zac's altered soul breakthrough releases Creation and Oblivion remnants inside his aperture. He maneuvers them into destroying Mossy, the hostile consciousness hidden in his moss crystal, then forms two damaged but powerful soul cores through repeated collisions of life, death, and conflict. The Calamity Mountain's spirit trades its energy for remnant power and leaves Zac a twinned crystal before abandoning its failing body. Esmeralda, a small toad with ancient abilities, helps drive away the awakened dream beast as Zac escapes. The crystal is the Calamity Core, a pure life-death foundation suited to Zac's future cosmic core, but taking it creates a public event that rewards anyone who steals it. Zac survives repeated ambushes, consumes a rare flower to repair his soul, and defeats most of a specialized Earth-attuned squad, though its leader escapes. Near the exit, Beastkin block his path, but two Eternal Clan vampire leaders force them back. Zac still holds the Calamity Core as he joins the vampires toward the teleporter, uncertain what they want from him.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
The vampires help Zac ambush members of the Grand Firmament Coalition, and he returns safely from the Calamity with the Calamity Core. Catheya remains in the city as bait before entering seclusion, while Zac and Ogras travel to the Quarry. Zac discovers that its fate kernels conceal a second structure based on the void. He absorbs seventeen hidden keys, enduring severe suppression until they form a First People constellation and open an inheritance in a separate dimension. Ogras and Catheya each receive a personalized empty fate kernel, but only Zac can safely enter the inheritance itself. There he experiences years of compressed crafting instruction and receives Cosmic Forge, a void-based refinement method. He also claims a crystal that converts presented Dao into corresponding void aspects, naming it the Void Engine and making it part of his revised cosmic-core plan. After leaving, Zac earns more mana through another duel scheme and auctions the final empty kernel. A barbarian cultivator named Kruta then asks to accompany him into a future war zone, and Zac agrees.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
Zac and Catheya begin a committed romantic relationship while each continues separate cultivation. Zac advances Cosmic Forge across dangerous Dao environments, then learns from Kruta that unusual activity is building in the Stand of Saeward. Before entering, Zac reaches the ghost monastery on Mount Illumination and resists its attempts to dissolve his identity. He escapes with a strand of Lucky Beads that sharpens his sense of the hostile fate gathering around him. He also creates Primal Edict, a persistent life-and-conflict skill, and earns new titles that strengthen him for the expected ambush. Zac asks Catheya and Ogras to investigate from safety while he travels with Kruta in disguise. Kruta believes Saeward's unexplained disappearance concealed a trove near the old command center. Inside the Stand, battlefield memories and puppet armies react to conflict, and violence rapidly worsens the entire zone. Zac's danger sense confirms that his unknown pursuers are already present, but he and Kruta continue toward the castle at the center of the war.
Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)
Valsa Planur, an Imperial princess, traps Zac and Kruta with a force of Deathsworn soldiers and mages. Her edict seals Zac's class transformation, but Primal Edict lets him destroy her support force. Kruta draws the Stand's puppets into the battle at the cost of a leg, and the pair escape through a lethal metallic river into Saeward's castle. There they discover that Saeward engineered the recurring war as a sacrificial cultivation loop, gathering conflict and memories for a transfer into a superior puppet. Zac and Kruta sabotage the ritual, and heavenly tribulation destroys the puppet's apparent soul. Valsa follows them into the castle and critically wounds Kruta. Zac combines Oblivion and conflict in an annihilating attack that kills her, though the technique damages his Dao mold. Valsa's father, Vastermal Planur, attacks the Perennial Vastness and tries to recover her memories. Sendor, the realm's avatar, intervenes and manipulates time so Vastermal retains nothing useful about Zac or the trial.
Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)
Sendor heals Zac and Kruta and explains that Saeward's original soul remains trapped in a recurring failure scenario, while the original victims have been freed. He awards both cultivators Warstone shards suited to conflict-based core formation. Sendor also recognizes Zac's aura as connected to the Void Emperor, but the System blocks further explanation and warns Zac about the Terminus. An unclaimed Indomitable Court seal remains on the battlefield, and Zac offers it to Kruta. Kruta accepts, completing Zac's cycle of nine Ultum seal bearers. Back in Vastness City, Esmeralda returns with Lova, who explains that the toad is an ancient thief trapped in repeated reincarnations. Esmeralda contracts to accompany Zac into the Left Imperial Palace in return for passage and help pursuing her own objective. She begins opening Valsa's ring, while Catheya leads an operation against the remaining Deathsworn and their surveillance network. Once the immediate Imperial threat is removed, Zac turns fully toward solving the fusion of his Calamity Core, Warstone, and Void Engine.
Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)
Kruta leaves the Perennial Vastness, but an Empyrean Throne disciple takes him after learning of his connection to an Ultum seal. Meanwhile, Zac helps Ogras capture a shifting dreamgeist for his Spirit Lock Physique. Thea discovers that her Sangha has been using her karmic link with Zac to locate Ultum seals and agrees to continue only if it swears not to target Zac's people and obtains a seal for her. Zac and Catheya hunt together, and Catheya awakens environmental harmonization before choosing a Dao domain as her next major step. The two explicitly commit to a long future despite political obligations and long separations. Zac completes his Omni-Tool, advances Cosmic Forge, and receives Valsa's opened wealth from Esmeralda before she leaves for Zekia. Ogras takes Worldly Cognizance from the cache and incorporates the dreamgeist, while Catheya receives formation resources. Near the Vastness's practical mana limit, Zac leaves Catheya and enters the Calamity's upper layer to claim the remaining Creation and Oblivion remnants and begin core formation.
Story so far - through chapter 79 (this book)
Zac installs a Hollow Core inside the autonomous Duplicity Core, then seizes another Oblivion splinter and Creation shard from the Calamity's paired suns. He forces the six remnants into conflict, briefly creating Chaos, and uses that harmony to establish balanced life and death inside the Hollow Core. The System subdues the remaining calamity and returns him to Mount Illumination. Elsewhere, Kruta survives an apparent years-long death trial that is revealed as a shorter, perception-distorting test. A Tain supremacy accepts him as her sole disciple and gives him two years of training before deciding whether he can continue toward the coming junior event. Zac enters sealed core formation with over 130,000 mana. The Perennial Vastness refines his Warstone and Calamity Core while his Voidheart processes the Void Engine. The void component arrives hours late, after the temporary harmony begins to fail, but Zac divides it across the life and death structures. He completes a stable nucleus with seven minor imperfections, proving that his quantum life-death design can exist.
Story so far - through chapter 82 (this book)
Zac builds successive life, death, and conflict layers around the nucleus, using void energy to keep the opposing structures balanced. Months of eruptions damage the Hollow Core and its internal wiring, but costly healing resources let him finish a functioning Trinity-path cosmic core. Its toll of hegemony manifests opposing hosts of axe bearers and executioners, drawing an exceptionally severe tribulation. Zac refuses sacrificial methods that would transfer the harm to others. His new Dao domain absorbs the first bolt, while the second ravages his body and core before Voidheart and the Duplicity Core consume the remaining lightning. A hidden array left by Leandra conceals his precise location from the final attack. The Duplicity Core then reorganizes itself around the new cosmic core and waits for class selection. Zac chooses the Arcane pair Evolutionary Precursor and Inexorable Apostle, fully committing to his established life-death path. The core integrates with his body, confirming his ascent to hegemony. He now turns toward Ultum, the Left Imperial Palace, the wider war, and rescuing Kenzie.
How does it end? (ending)
Zac finishes the volume as a newly ascended hegemon. His middle-quality but highly unique quantum life-death core is integrated with the Duplicity Core. For his two Arcane classes, he selects Evolutionary Precursor and Inexorable Apostle. Ogras remains his ally and a future palace participant. Catheya is alive, committed to Zac, and continuing her own cultivation while Undead Empire politics remain unresolved. Kruta holds the Indomitable Court seal and is training as the sole disciple of a Tain supremacy. Esmeralda has gone to Zekia under her contract to accompany Zac into the Left Imperial Palace, while Thea's cooperation with the Sangha remains conditional. Zac has completed his nine-bearer Ultum cycle, but the palace contest itself has not begun. The Hollow Court objective may offer leverage for Catheya's freedom, Sendor's warning about the Terminus remains unexplained, and Zac still intends to confront the wider war and rescue Kenzie.
