In short (whole book)

Zac's rise to hegemony splits his human and Draugr aspects into two bodies sharing one identity, core, and memories. He turns the accident into the public Zac and Arcaz partnership, strengthens the Atwood Empire's war organization, and gains an extraordinary Draugr awakening through the Abyssal Pond. His forces conquer Kan'Tanu worlds before the widening war compels them into a catastrophic red-zone offensive and a contest for a damaged Limitless Empire fortress. Along the way, Zac acquires a genuine-bond Court Cycle Token, encounters the Void Mountain and a warning about the Terminus, while Ogras, Joanna, Harrow, and Vilari advance along separate paths. The fortress expedition is compromised by infiltrators, an ancient bell, Tussar's attempted seal theft, and a death-sworn ambush. Zac escapes into a spatial storm with the Mavai chieftain, who claims the Starfall Court seal, but Emily is separated and missing. Vilari enters the bell under a dangerous bargain. Badly wounded, Zac reaches the still-armed fortress as General Dawson exposes outside involvement and a hidden imperial prince revises his plan.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Zac rules the Atwood Empire while pursuing a path that combines life, death, conflict, and the void. His human and Draugr natures, unusual bloodlines, specialty cores, and connections to Ultum have drawn attention from powers far beyond his home. His sister Kenzie remains endangered by the System, with Leandra and Jeeves attempting to alter her cultivation. Vilari serves as Zac's adopted daughter and war-intelligence leader, Emily as his disciple and commander, Joanna as a Valkyrie strike leader and seal seeker, and Carl as a long-range Atwood combatant. Ogras pursues a shadow path and his own breakthrough, while Vivi remains Zac's spirit-plant companion. The Kan'Tanu war threatens Zekia, and the Atwood Empire has become part of that wider struggle. Zac begins this volume in the Perennial Vastness, attempting the hegemony breakthrough that will determine whether his divided cultivation can become a stable cosmic core.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Zac survives his hegemony breakthrough, but the Quantum Gate destabilizes and forces his human and Draugr aspects into two real bodies. They are not separate people: one mind, soul, core, and memory operate through both. Each body carries one class, while the shared link grants both the benefits of the whole cultivation system. Sendor protects the unconscious Zac from Engo, tests the impossible connection, and confirms that distance does not end it, although strong Dao isolation can sever it and weaken both halves. Sendor also provides defensive marks and information about Zac's K.R. Elu ancestry, including links to the Technocrat Codex and true twin existence. Leandra offers a Sanctuary contingency that might protect Kenzie, but it requires Zac to recover a key and meet a centuries-long deadline. Zac returns to Earth with the bodies arriving separately and begins adapting to divided perception. He prepares Arcaz Umbrizi as the public explanation for his Draugr half. Meanwhile, Alea approaches a tool-spirit breakthrough, and Vilari reports that the Kan'Tanu war has already produced enemy beachheads and heavy losses across Zekia.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Zac enters the war under his own name and receives an S-grade evaluation, the Fated Flame Bearer designation, and a campaign tied to conquering worlds and securing a seal bearer. When living Kan'Tanu siege weapons breach the Eighth Army's defenses, a young soldier dies despite Zac's attempt to save him. Zac draws the enemy's attention onto himself, destroys the living bombs and several hegemons, then orders an immediate counterattack. The army conquers the hostile world, but the victory reinforces the human cost of his rule. Zac learns how war designations, individual merit, and faction merit shape authority and rewards. The empire cannot afford every strategic option, so higher-grade campaigns and creator-made cosmic vessels become central to its plans. Vilari confirms that Emily has become the empire's first native hegemon and is leading an independent campaign. Zac registers his second body as Arcaz Umbrizi, producing separate System records for the two identities. Their adjacent positions on the sector ladder attract attention from the Dravorak dynasty and Tavza's Draugr delegation. Zac prepares to visit Kavriel Province and its promised Abyssal Pond.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Arcaz enters Kavriel with Calrin to open trade and negotiate with the Undead Empire. Tavza receives him as an important Draugr claimant, while Kator White Sky tests him and proposes a duel for a captive Zathia seal bearer. Zac explains the supposed split between Zac and Arcaz, admits that both bodies hold Left Imperial Palace quests, and preserves his loyalty to the Atwood Empire. The undead delegates accept that his bloodline is genuine but remain wary of its political consequences. They offer help with siege resources and methods against Buddhist interference, although System restrictions limit direct aid. Zac demonstrates both identities acting independently, upgrades death-attuned skills, and secures trade access. Alea survives her D-grade trial and remains inside an evolution cocoon, while Zac plans Verun's evolution and seeks the rare life-attuned materials and merit it requires. After negotiations, Zac publicly presents Zac and Arcaz as twin-like co-rulers created by the breakthrough. The Atwood Empire then reorganizes its armies for aggressive campaigns, integrating Draugr, humans, Jix, Mavai, and specialized units into larger companies. The shift promises greater merit and growth but accepts much higher casualties.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

Zac addresses several problems within the expanding empire. Rubot takes responsibility for integrating the Jix into Atwood formations without recreating an imposed faith hierarchy, Ibtep's Grub Knight mission remains unsuited to the available breeds, and Sap Trang stays outside war registration while containing aquatic beast kings. Zac then enters the Abyssal Pond under the supervision of Kavriel's monarchs. The artificial pond connects him to the true abyssal lake, where the Draugr progenitor offers guidance rather than control. The encounter produces an unprecedented awakening linked to his ancestral bloodline and leaves a sealed Dao impartation. The resulting surge destabilizes the pond, forcing the surrounding Draugr and monarchs to contain the disaster. Zac returns with a stronger Draugr body and a deeper connection to death, but the imbalance between his two halves worsens. Tavza cannot establish the full cost or purpose of the progenitor's intervention. Zac leaves Kavriel with limited Undead Empire cooperation and greater political importance, while the Abyssal Shores, White Sky interests, and other factions reassess what his returning bloodline means for the Left Imperial Palace.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

The Atwood Empire completes its wartime reorganization and fields the Calamity Company in a sequence of increasingly difficult campaigns. Zac initially conceals most of his strength so the new formations can gain experience. Joanna's Valkyries target command personnel, Carl destroys elite enemies from extreme range, and the company's expensive arrays and war machines overwhelm the first neutral battlefront. The victory proves the organization works, but its equipment costs and personnel losses cannot be sustained indefinitely. Abyssal water then activates one of Zac's hidden nodes, which refines the energy and indirectly advances his Draugr bloodline. Ordinary death-attuned materials can reproduce the effect only weakly. After three more victories, the company reaches Kerkos VI, an inhabited Kan'Tanu world with prepared defenses, superior numbers, cursed terrain, and D-grade war machines. The System gives the attackers only a short protection period. Zac senses the world lord hidden among the defenders and decides to prevent his escape, setting up the campaign's decisive confrontation.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

On Kerkos VI, the Calamity Company breaches the prepared Kan'Tanu army while Zac cuts through its formations to the world lord. The ruler's magnetic domain, elite guard, heart curse, and escape treasure all fail. Zac drags him back from a dimensional vortex and kills him, making the planet temporarily neutral. The company secures surviving array towers, mining sites, the capital, and further campaign opportunities. Elsewhere, White Sky leaders conclude that Zac's Abyssal Pond awakening and Palace fate make him a dangerous political fulcrum amid the Undead Empire's internal conflict. An outside prince also begins moving battlefronts to increase his own connection to the Palace. Zac continues conquests as Arcaz, with Joanna and Carl leading specialized strikes. A captive pirate named Stormstar is recovered from a remolded dungeon, satisfying the seal-bearer part of Zac's first Flame Bearer campaign. A final satellite-world conquest completes the quest and rewards Zac with a blank Court Cycle Token. His next campaign demands vastly more merit and a middle D-grade end node, beyond the company's present strength.

Story so far - through chapter 56 (this book)

Stormstar attacks Zac from confinement and proves unable to activate the Court Cycle Token despite holding a Hollow Court seal. By contrast, Zac's technocrat navigator immediately produces a Far Sea Court rune. Zac concludes that the token requires genuine personal connections, not a collection of seal bearers, and begins adding compatible allies while three outer-court positions remain inaccessible. He also supports the navigator's scanner-analysis work and possible restoration of an organic body. Zac then faces Kator White Sky in a technique-restricted duel. Kator's miracle bones support a sophisticated system of time, gravity, and combat impetus that steadily controls the fight. Zac answers with Void Zone and briefly unites his Dao, heart, and void, but the attempt opens a vision of an inverted mountain and eight ancient wills warning about the Terminus. A Buddhist authority detects the event and sends investigators. Zac returns with a persistent Void Mountain imprint, scores one hit through its resonance, then forfeits before Kator escalates further. Afterward, the Zathia alchemist is delivered as a memory-retaining revenant. Damaged by forced Kan'Tanu advancement, he stays with Zac and begins a three-year recovery rather than return to his family.

Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)

Ogras completes a high-quality Shadow Mirage Core, becomes a Shadewar Sovereign, and confirms that the spirits bound through his physique can communicate with him. Before he returns, a powerful assassin claiming a debt to the Lord of the Perennial Vastness takes him into a year of Red Hand Society training and seals away his flag. The Kan'Tanu invasion meanwhile becomes a monarch-level red-zone conflict. The System ends the Atwood Empire's voluntary participation and orders six battlefronts consolidated into two frontline companies. Zac refuses to protect his strongest troops by sacrificing weaker forces. Vilari prepares her hegemony breakthrough with two Anima Court seals, while Joanna enters a lethal seal trial. Zac deepens his study of the Void Mountain and permanently bonds with Harrow through Adaptive Symbiosis, allowing the vine and Zac to exchange vigor and Dao. Vivi enters Zac's world ring with the young plant. Joanna survives the final manifestation of Indra Eiler, the Emperor's Spear, and receives an indomitable martial impartation. The Atwood forces are ready to enter the main war with several companions transformed or committed to separate paths.

Story so far - through chapter 69 (this book)

Zac, Vilari, and the fused Atwood army enter the red zone under Allbright captain Tussar. Unknown to them, Alliance positions have been compromised by replacement operatives. The army joins the assault on Wolf Teeth Camp, fighting through enormous Kan'Tanu forces and a world-blighting formation. Allied losses exceed fifty million before the reinforcement route is severed. The Acheron Company alone loses more than eighty thousand soldiers, with many more wounded. The captured transference array is redirected into a spatial storm, but the offensive's real objective is finally disclosed: a damaged Limitless Empire war fortress moving within an unstable man-made realm. Its barriers exclude stronger entrants, making the Atwood hegemons useful despite the extreme danger. Central Command divides the company and orders Zac's First Division into the recovery force. General Dawson takes command at the destination. Zac cannot refuse without exposing his faction to charges of desertion or treason, so the division accepts the fortress mission while the rest of the company remains on cleanup duty.

Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)

Dawson explains that the fortress can be reached only through brief openings in an unstable barrier and that its automated defenses attack every entrant. The Alliance offers immense merit for reaching a passage, but the assembled force appears to lack the strongest protected factions. On the way to a predicted hotspot, an ancient damaged bell traps the mobile base. Its influence bypasses ordinary defenses and compels soldiers to tear out their hearts. Vilari slows the mass compulsion, while Dawson uses a celestial defense and an earth-traversal array to escape. At least a tenth of the force dies. Vilari believes the bell sought her specifically and reports that it implanted a technique called Embers of Seven Sensations. The technique resembles her master's inheritance but appears corrupted. She refuses to examine it until its danger is understood. Despite the casualties, Dawson continues toward the hotspot as a continent-wide spatial storm approaches. The expedition meets an elite Kan'Tanu formation using a heart-curse centipede and flesh goliaths from the Chapter of Hallowed Flesh, beginning the battle for access to the fortress.

Story so far - through chapter 78 (this book)

The hotspot battle collapses into spatial faults, mass casualties, flesh goliaths, and elite Kan'Tanu attacks. Zac creates a refuge with Apex Jungle, but a reincarnator hexmaster infiltrates it while a saber master joins the assault. Zac reveals Void Energy, Emily kills the saber master with a technocrat device, and the Mavai chieftain destroys the hexmaster's last clone. The chieftain claims the resulting Starfall Court seal after Zac stops Tussar from stealing it. Tussar reveals a soul-fueled sacrificial rebirth meant to bypass the seal's age restriction, but six disguised death-sworn infiltrators kill him, sever Zac's foot, wound Emily, and isolate the group. Zac activates a defective fractal to break their barrier. The spatial storm floods in, and Zac escapes with the chieftain while Emily takes another fracture and goes missing. Vilari kills three Hallowed Flesh hegemons, entrusts the Acheron Company to its commander, and enters the bell. She bargains with its resident entity for strength under conditional terms. Dawson alerts Archduke Everfast to outside involvement. An unnamed imperial prince revises the failed plot. Zac and the wounded chieftain survive the storm and reach the damaged, still-armed fortress.

How does it end? (ending)

Zac breaks the death-sworn isolation array with an unstable fractal, but the escape divides his group. Emily deliberately takes a separate spatial fracture and remains missing. Vilari stays behind, kills three Hallowed Flesh hegemons, places the Acheron Company under its commander, and enters the ancient bell. She bargains with its corrupting resident for strength in return for confronting its enemies and helping it pursue something in the Anima Courts. Tussar dies before completing his attempt to steal the Starfall Court seal, which the Mavai chieftain successfully claims. Zac and the wounded chieftain survive the spatial storm, kill two pursuers, and emerge beside the damaged Limitless Empire fortress. Zac is badly injured and missing a foot, while the fortress remains active and dangerous. General Dawson recognizes that outside powers have shaped the operation and sends a direct warning to Archduke Everfast. An unnamed imperial prince adjusts the failed plot, intending to isolate the flame-bearer and reach Ultum's courtyards himself. Kenzie's Sanctuary route, Ogras's compulsory training, Zac's incomplete seal cycle, the Void Mountain, the Undead Empire's internal struggle, Vilari's bargain, and Emily's fate all remain unresolved.
