He survives the Chasm, gains Branch of the War Axe, and takes a second Creation shard, but its instability opens an incomplete Quantum Gate. Catheya heads toward the City of Ancients. At the ravine, Zac discovers that the Eternal Clan vampire has stolen the Oblivion splinter he needs and challenged him to recover it at the City.

Previously: Zac is an Earth cultivator responsible for Port Atwood and its living and undead defenders. Joanna leads the Valkyries, while Emily is one of Zac's fighters and disciples. Alea persists through the spirit tool Love's Bond, and Varun is associated with Zac's axe. Zac accepts Catheya's offer to join a Twilight Ocean expedition for life-death pearls. He spends heavily in Twilight Harbor on pills, weapons, crystals, skills, and supplies for Port Atwood, while Velary prepares to return home with the purchases. At the auction, he obtains the Stone of Hope and other rare resources, drawing attacks from cultivators who noticed his wealth. Catheya's master protects him from a powerful rival, but the price becomes a second, concealed obligation. After killing an assassin who attacks Zac's vessel, the master gives Zac a sealed egg and binds him to deliver it into the Twilight Chasm within three years. The Chasm is among the trial's most lethal regions, and Zac cannot safely return to Earth before completing the mission. He releases Nala from service, tells Velary enough to explain his delay, and enters seclusion. Using the Stone of Hope and three awakening fruits, he completes a major Draugr racial advancement, gaining a living heartbeat, stronger pathways, and greater miasma capacity before continuing his preparations.

At Cork Island, Catheya divides the expedition. Zac, Catheya, and Varro enter the island's center to drive a patterned spike into its mother tree while the others build a cork submersible. A powerful tree-man elite nearly stops them, but Zac delays him long enough to complete the sabotage. The party escapes, finishes the vessel, and later disrupts another node. During the voyage, Zac completes his Peak Fragment of the Axe, but the Living Pulse destroys the submersible and scatters the expedition underground. Zac finds Catheya near death and restores her enough to search for another tracking signal. The signal leads them to an array-capable squad member who admits he was planted to stop Catheya's mission. He has sabotaged the expedition and prepared a cave full of pollen that immobilizes undead while draining their miasma. Zac's unusual purification should eventually free him, but Catheya has only minutes before irreversible slumber. With both of them trapped and the operative waiting, Zac decides to risk opening the sealed core that separates his forms.

Catheya learns that Zac and Arcaz Black are the same person and accepts a System-enforced secrecy pact with him. In return for rescue and silence, she agrees to teach him skill evolution and necromancy. They survive a Havarok ambush, then learn that a wider life-death tapestry continues advancing even when individual nodes are disrupted. Elsewhere, Ogras and Billy are confirmed alive inside the sentient dimensional seed, though Ogras plans to leave Billy's protected settlement in search of his own opportunity. Catheya and Zac form a second bargain involving her endangered clan and two locations he wants found. After rejoining the remaining expedition members, they abandon further sabotage and reach a hidden valley of life-death plants. The group harvests 124 pearls, and Zac buys the surplus before separating to cultivate. He advances his Coffin fragment, halts an incomplete Bodhi breakthrough, raises both forms to their safe limits, and manually upgrades his mental defense. With his seclusion complete, he turns toward the Twilight Chasm and Va Tapek's egg.

A revenge brand placed by defeated attackers turns Zac's Arcaz Black identity into bait. He keeps the mark for a week, survives repeated assaults, gathers loot, and develops his death-aligned combat stance before discarding the tracker and resuming travel in human form. In the Green Grove Archipelago, Zac trades for a larger map and meets the Radiant Temple elf who operates a temporary settlement. Their skill-free spar teaches Zac to shape evolution as controlled adaptation rather than random change, allowing him to complete his Peak Fragment of the Bodhi. A shrimp beast king attacks immediately afterward, but Zac uses the settlement array to open an escape route. He continues toward the Chasm and upgrades several skills, including a burst enhancement strong enough to help kill an early D-grade beast at severe personal cost. He also improves his movement, constitution, and undead battlefield domain, though one attempted upgrade produces an inferior result. Twilight energy grows harder to expel as he enters deeper territory. By chapter 44, Zac has reached the Twilight Chasm and must deliver the egg before the environment overwhelms his reserves.

Zac follows the egg's stored vision to a hidden valley and places it on an altar, ending Va Tapek's lethal binding. Love's Bond reacts strongly to the fixed treasure, so Zac marks the egg with Creation in hopes of eventually claiming it for Alea. The resulting eruption draws an Eternal Clan vampire contender, who overwhelms and maims him. Zac wounds her with an Origin Mark but wakes deep in the Chasm missing a leg and a hand. The Twilight Lord's colossal guardian then hunts him for formation flags consumed during that evolution. Zac invokes the System to survive its killing strike, but the intervention creates Reciprocity, a limited quest requiring him to surrender a glimpse of chaos within 598 days or lose levels and a Dao. Before leaving, Zac rebuilds Profane Seal into the supreme restraining skill Pillar of Desolation. He then returns to the hidden valley and finds that the egg has become the core of a runic microcosm protecting pure light. Zac imposes his separated life and death path on the apparatus, swallows the light, and triggers heavenly tribulation. Love's Bond saves him during the collapse. The two spirit tools gain opposite imprints, Zac advances to Branch of the War Axe, and the egg falls into the Chasm. Zac infers that it had been purifying twilight energy and that Va Tapek may be cooperating with the Twilight Lord.

Ogras is poisoned and hunted within a separate trial inside the dimensional seed. He has four of six keys needed for a repository and is offered a method to bind the plane-walking shadow entity within him, but obtaining it requires entering a guarded tower. Zac, meanwhile, follows the Cleansing Waters tracker to a concealed array. Destroying its pillar releases altered Havarok warriors fused with twilight energy. Pillar of Desolation captures the attackers and incorporates them into its monument, but the decree records only nine of 729 targets. Zac abandons the larger quest, preferring the remaining jammers to obstruct the Twilight Lord rather than earn a meeting with him. After escaping the Chasm, Zac captures a Havarok scout and learns that major powers oppose the Evening Tide Asura's attempt to achieve autarky through Twilight Harbor. An ancient city has also appeared in the middle reaches, drawing most serious contenders. Zac releases the scout after taking his map and follows the Death Pulse to Catheya's refuge. He reunites with Catheya and her two surviving followers, both marked by the expedition's losses and gains.

Catheya explains that Zac's ladder position and clashes with major factions endangered her group. Zac compensates her followers with Dao treasures and learns that they found the two remnant locations he requested. He tells Catheya that the Evening Tide Asura is using Twilight Harbor as a sacrificial vessel in an autarky attempt, and she concludes that her master may have helped him. The City of Ancients has drawn almost a million cultivators, but Zac leaves Catheya's group and travels to the quieter volcanic site containing a Creation shard. In human form, he uses Origin Marks to survive the volcano's recurring pulses and reaches its core after four days of mapping shifting tunnels. Unable to contain the shard in a box, he absorbs it. The new shard reshapes his body, clashes with the Oblivion power already imprisoned within him, and pulls him into visions of Creation consuming its wielders. The Aether Lord denies arranging Zac's shard path and sets a wager requiring five shards within a century. As the vision ends, the Twilight Lord senses the absorption and directly attacks Zac's location through the trial.

At the ravine, the expected Oblivion concentration is greatly reduced. A dying blood thrall delivers the Eternal Clan vampire's challenge, and Zac finds that she has taken the Oblivion splinter to the City of Ancients. The book ends with Zac alive and compelled toward that confrontation while the Twilight Lord's autarky struggle and the gathering factional conflict continue.
