In short (whole book)
Zac enters the City of Ancients to reclaim an Oblivion splinter from Uona. He kills her through a System descent, takes the splinter, and rescues a crystal holding twin nascent realm spirits, but the Evening Tide Asura uses the wider catastrophe to ascend and destroy Twilight Harbor. Stranded in the void, Zac is swallowed into Orom, a prison-realm inside a primordial spatial beast. Years of forced cultivation follow. He perfects another Nine Reincarnations layer, develops life and death Dao branches, rebuilds his combat foundations, and earns new Creation and Oblivion remnants from Three Virtues and Kaldor. During an external attack on Orom, Zac absorbs both remnants, forms a third glimpse of chaos, destroys his prison brand, and opens a chaos gate. The System ultimately takes the glimpse, reseals all three depleted remnant sets, grants the fifth Nine Reincarnations layer, and teleports the badly injured but free Zac toward home.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Zac became a leading defender of Earth and Port Atwood while cultivating two linked identities, one living and one undead. His path combines life and death and involves dangerous remnants of Creation and Oblivion. Catheya, a Clan Charvazi cultivator, knows his undead identity as Arcaz Black and has become an important ally and political contact. Ogras remains Zac's demon ally, Emily is his disciple, and Alea's consciousness is bound to the spirit tool Love's Bond. Port Atwood's defense rests with commanders including Velary Blackwood and Joanna Thompson when Zac is away. At the start of this volume, Zac is still operating in Twilight Harbor, separated from Earth and pursuing advancement while the consequences of his unusual cultivation path continue to gather.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
Zac leaves the Twilight Chasm without the Oblivion splinter because Uona has taken it. The Creation shard he still carries is increasingly unstable, so he follows her to the City of Ancients. Ventus Calavan's recording warns that the City contains a blood-and-soul trap around a surviving realm spirit. Catheya, Varro, and Queer Eye help Zac approach and scout the sealed site, while a distant System prompt forces him to authorize Port Atwood's incursion without returning home. When the City's gates open, Zac enters alone and becomes trapped in a blood-responsive confusion array that turns entrants violent. He learns to navigate by using blood, breaches the inner castle grounds, and fights through Uona's altered blood thralls. At the building holding the splinter, he discovers that the Adalon have incorporated it into a soul-crystal formation intended to create a realm avatar. Their leader, Aia Ouro, asks him to wait, but Zac's internal imbalance leaves no time. The Adalon merge into a hive war array, and Zac counters with an unstable life-and-creation transformation of one of his techniques.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Zac breaks the Adalon hive formation, badly wounding Aia Ouro, but Uona takes the Oblivion splinter through a dying blood thrall before he can claim it. Their direct battle reveals that Uona is a close-range spear fighter sustained by a huge blood effigy. Zac cannot defeat her while that external reserve keeps replacing her contaminated blood, so he attacks the effigy instead. Its collapse produces a violent blood avatar and leaves Uona greatly weakened. With Love's Bond cracking under the assault, Zac breaks part of the prison holding the remnants in his mind. He reaches the avatar's core, takes the splinter, and releases all four remnant forces inside himself. During the resulting displacement, Catheya's Draugr ancestor refuses to return to her clan and requires Zac to gather five cursed remnants within a century. Zac then forms a new glimpse of chaos. He catches the fleeing Uona and exposes her to it, after which System lightning destroys her spirit. The lightning also clears the City's haze and opens the route to the realm spirit. Aia Ouro survives Zac's attack only to be killed by an unidentified man, and the entire mystic realm begins to collapse.
Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)
The System repairs damage directly caused by Zac's glimpse of chaos and recontains his remnants, but his body and pathways remain badly injured. As the realm collapses, its spirit offers temporal crystals and a hidden treasure that may save Zac's overextended tool spirit. The treasury contains a crystal holding twin, unawakened realm spirits aligned with life and death. Zac stabilizes Love's Bond with temporal energy, then recognizes that the crystal's array can transfer a consciousness. Suspecting the old realm spirit intends to possess the twins, he destroys the array and takes the crystal. The realm spirit turns openly hostile, while the Evening Tide Asura begins an ascension ritual fueled by the collapsing Twilight Ocean and the conflict outside. Zac escapes the castle and prepares for ejection. Catheya learns that her ancestor still lives, but she and Zac separate before emerging into the larger battle. The Evening Tide Asura detonates the Twilight Ascent and draws the gathered forces into its path. Zac awakens amid a shattered Twilight Harbor with teleportation sealed and powerful factions still fighting. He releases a revenant corpse altered to resemble Arcaz Black as a karmic decoy, then crosses the wreckage while carrying the nascent realm-spirit crystal.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
Zac pursues a purifier egg into the void because Love's Bond indicates Alea needs it. The egg helps her, but the spatial tear closes and strands him. A vast fish-like captor traps Zac and thousands of others in draining bubbles, then carries them to Orom, a primordial spatial beast. Meanwhile, the Evening Tide Asura successfully ascends and Twilight Harbor is destroyed. Catheya's clan uses the crisis to support an Umbrizi war against the Havarok Empire. The Umbrizi matriarch investigates Arcaz Black, and the clan decides to protect that identity publicly as Arcaz Umbrizi. Inside Orom, Zac is sorted as a valuable first-string prisoner. A brand caps his effective attributes, blocks much of his equipment and movement, and binds him to a true realm within the beast's body. Normal release requires Dao confirmation at an exceptional level, although rare captives are ransomed or extracted. Orom rewards cultivation but regularly relegates underperformers, with death awaiting the lowest ranks. Zac cannot expect rescue and has only three years before his first reshuffling. He resolves to recover, learn the prison's laws, build strength, and create a single-use escape plan while keeping his living and undead identities separate.
Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)
Zac learns how Orom authorizes possessions and recovers selected cultivation resources from his sealed storage. Loot taken from Aia Ouro supplies extensive soul theory, treasures, and array material. A test with his bloodline proves that Void Energy can bypass important parts of the prison seal, allowing him to access otherwise forbidden items and abilities. He establishes a concealed cultivation site at Samsara's Edge, where life and death environments meet. After healing, Zac decides to use Orom's resources before risking another escape. He absorbs soul-strengthening and purifying treasures, purchases breakthrough supplies, and begins the second stage of Nine Reincarnations. The attempt shatters his soul core and reveals that the method requires separately attuned components. Zac forms four life and four death outer cores but initially lacks a ninth. By drawing refined soul-strings from all eight and combining them through controlled conflict, he creates a central core and completes a perfect second reincarnation. Orom grants him a large contribution reward. The strengthened mental defenses then help him open dangerous nodes near his heart and throat, bringing both racial classes to level 125, although the prison brand continues to suppress his output.
Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)
Zac resumes investigating Orom and meets Heda, Ubo, and Travo Raso. The world's edge redirects captives inward through spatial law, leaving no ordinary route out. He studies Pavina's pure-death combat, awakens a Draugr hidden node that reinforces his energy constructs, and spends months fighting in the wilderness. Separate developments show Emily surviving her party's betrayal and accepting a dangerous pocket-realm trial, while a goblin mage studies Spirit-Lock Physique with a hostile bound ghost. Zac's first full-power escape attempt opens only a tiny spatial tear, wasting more than a year of stored Oblivion energy. He accepts that he must cultivate for as long as necessary rather than rely on raw force. A life elemental then leads him to a hidden Buddhist monk who gives him a perennial vastness token. The monk reveals himself as Three Virtues, an avatar of Lord 84th, the Lotus Emperor. Three Virtues holds a Creation shard and points Zac toward Kaldor, an Orom battalion leader who possesses a matching Oblivion splinter. Kaldor offers a lethal bargain: Zac has three years to prepare and must land one hit on him to earn the splinter.
Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)
Zac accepts Kaldor's challenge and trains under Pavina, now revealed as Kaldor's disciple. She shows that Zac has tried to force Dao insights into combat foundations that are not ready to support them. Zac replaces a defensive mastery with Armament Mastery and rebuilds his axe-and-chain method from basic movement, timing, and control. He advances both mastery skills while developing his life and death stances as interdependent halves of one path. When progress on his life-attuned evolutionary stance stalls, Heda supplies a powerful living vine weapon suited to it. Elsewhere, Ogras uses Shadewar while pursuing an ice spirit and the Spirit-Lock Physique, but repeated memory losses surround his search. In Orom, Zac passes the three-year assessment while Travo Raso is relegated. To force his next breakthrough and finance a rare purchase, Zac wagers heavily against Traprandar, a late-hegemon arena fighter. Traprandar's binding light, ring attacks, and soul assault nearly overwhelm him. Under that pressure Zac completes the Integration Stage of the evolutionary stance, regains control of his life-attuned combat, and wins the duel. Both of his principal stances have now entered Integration.
Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)
Zac spends his arena winnings on a Heaven Render Vine seed and prepares for two Dao breakthroughs. He advances his soul cultivation with dangerous resources, deliberately accumulating toxins that future tribulations may purge. His life breakthrough produces the early Branch of the Kalpataru after he endures three powerful lightning bolts. The Void Heart processes part of that lightning, cleansing impurities and tempering his soul. Zac then forms the death-aligned Branch of the Pale Seal and completes the class quest that required extinguishing one million souls. Confident that further wilderness training will not help before the deadline, Zac enters Kaldor's castle. Kaldor's deceptive movement, killing intent, and escalating force turn the challenge into a genuine fight for survival. The skeletal framework of Zac's Thousand Lights Avatar begins linking his body, soul, and Dao more naturally. Zac then uses an unusual Draugr bloodline talent to suppress Kaldor's surrounding Dao long enough to strike his chest. Kaldor honors the bargain and explains part of the Undead Empire's restriction on pure death cultivation. Zac receives the sealed Oblivion splinter, but must return it within a little over three months unless he accepts the consequences of absorbing it.
Story so far - through chapter 71 (this book)
Pavina confirms that Zac's plan to fuse soul, body, Dao, and technique is possible, and tacitly supports his coming escape. Zac warns Heda and arranges for Vivi to guard Harrow in his world ring. Three Virtues tests Zac through a Buddhist heart trial, after which Zac receives the Creation shard and memorizes Boundless Vajra Sublimation without adopting it. He delays using the two new remnants until an external fire attack weakens Orom's suppression. Zac breaks the Oblivion splinter's casing and absorbs it, resisting its pressure toward despair and self-erasure. He then opens the Creation shard and rejects its temptation toward hubris. All six remnant forces collide inside him to form a third glimpse of chaos. Zac extracts a wisp that destroys his prison brand, uses a chaos-enhanced explosion to wound space, and sends the glimpse into the breach to create a gate. Heda passes through after entrusting Vivi to him. The gate diverts Zac beside the colossal golem that has badly wounded Orom. The System finally takes the glimpse, reseals Zac's three depleted remnant sets, grants the fifth Nine Reincarnations layer, and activates his escape bangle. Zac teleports away badly injured but free and moving toward home.
How does it end? (ending)
Zac wins Kaldor's Oblivion splinter and obtains Three Virtues's Creation shard, then waits for Orom's defenses to weaken under an external assault. He absorbs both remnants, resists their attacks on his convictions, and combines all six remnant forces into a third glimpse of chaos. A chaos wisp destroys his prison brand, and the glimpse turns a wound in space into an escape gate. Heda passes through the gate after leaving Vivi in Zac's care, while Kaldor and Pavina remain behind for their own undisclosed mission. Zac is diverted beside the fire-wielding golem attacking Orom, which has been badly wounded but not conclusively killed. The System finally removes the glimpse, seals Zac's three exhausted remnant sets with a new rune, awards him the fifth Nine Reincarnations layer, and activates his escape bangle. Zac teleports away heavily injured but free and headed toward home. He still carries the weakening twin realm-spirit crystal and responsibility for Vivi and Harrow. Catheya continues protecting his Arcaz identity, Ogras and Emily remain on separate unresolved paths, and both the Undead Empire and the Buddhist Sangha retain an interest in Zac's fate.
