By Lisa Kleypas

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Evangeline Jenner (Protagonist)

Also known as Evie

Appears from the start

A shy red-haired heiress whose severe stammer has encouraged her relatives to dismiss her. Facing coercion from the family that raised her and desperate to reach her dying father, she makes the bold decision to offer Sebastian St. Vincent a marriage of convenience.

Sebastian St. Vincent (Protagonist)

Also known as Lord St. Vincent, St. Vincent

Appears from the start

The handsome, dissolute heir to the Duke of Kingston. His reputation and finances are both in ruins after his actions against the Wallflowers, but Evie's coming inheritance gives him a reason to accept her startling proposal. Cynical and experienced, he expects marriage to be another bargain rather than a moral reformation.

Ivo Jenner (Supporting)

Also known as Mr. Jenner

First appears in chapter 4

Evie's estranged father and the owner of Jenner's, an exclusive London gaming club. Born outside polite society and kept from his daughter by her maternal relatives, he is gravely ill when she resolves to escape their control and go to him.

Cam Rohan (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A young Romani man who works at Jenner's and knows every part of the club's operations. Intelligent, self-contained, and respected by the staff, he becomes indispensable as Sebastian begins learning the business.

Lillian Bowman (Supporting)

Also known as Lady Westcliff

First appears in chapter 9

One of Evie's three close friends, the self-styled Wallflowers, and now the Countess of Westcliff. Fiercely loyal and outspoken, she has particular reason to distrust Sebastian after his recent attempt to abduct her.

Marcus, Earl of Westcliff (Supporting)

Also known as Lord Westcliff

First appears in chapter 9

Lillian's husband, an influential and disciplined earl. He regards Sebastian's conduct with anger and suspicion, yet his long friendship with him gives weight to his judgment when Evie's marriage forces the men into contact again.

Annabelle Hunt (Supporting)

Also known as Lady Hunt

First appears in chapter 11

The first of the Wallflowers to marry and one of Evie's most trusted friends. Practical and compassionate, she joins the other women in protecting Evie even though her new husband has his own bitter history with Sebastian.

Daisy Bowman (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 11

Lillian's younger sister and another member of the Wallflowers. Warm, curious, and less confrontational than Lillian, she remains devoted to Evie and attentive to the unexpected changes in her friend's marriage.

Eustace Maybrick (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

One of Evie's domineering maternal relatives. He and the rest of the Maybrick family have restricted her movements and intend to control the fortune she will inherit, making escape through marriage her only immediate protection.

Lord Hodgeham (Minor)

First appears in chapter 6

An associate at Jenner's whose knowledge of the club is mixed with self-interest. Sebastian's effort to impose order on the failing business puts him in conflict with men who profited while Ivo Jenner was ill.
