By Jeff Kinney

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Greg Heffley (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A middle-school student beginning another journal after a difficult summer. Greg is highly alert to embarrassment and social standing, and his immediate concern is that his older brother knows a humiliating story he wants kept private.

Rodrick Heffley (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Greg's teenage older brother and the drummer for Löded Diper. Rodrick is lazy about schoolwork, serious about his band, and skilled at keeping Greg uneasy through pranks and threats to expose his summer secret.

Rowley Jefferson (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Greg's loyal best friend. Rowley remains cheerful and less concerned with appearing mature than Greg, which makes him both a dependable companion and a frequent source of embarrassment in Greg's eyes.

Susan Heffley (Supporting)

Also known as Mom

Appears from the start

Greg's mother, who wants Greg and Rodrick to become closer. She introduces a household reward system called Mom Bucks, hoping that payment for chores and good behavior will reduce conflict between the brothers.

Frank Heffley (Supporting)

Also known as Dad

Appears from the start

Greg's father, who has little patience for Rodrick's noisy band or either older son's attempts to avoid responsibility. He is quicker than Susan to suspect that their apparent good behavior has an explanation.

Manny Heffley (Minor)

Appears from the start

Greg's much younger brother, who continues to receive more protection and indulgence from the adults than Greg thinks is fair.

Grandpa Heffley (Minor)

First appears in chapter 2

Greg's paternal grandfather, a resident of Leisure Towers. Greg's summer stay with him is connected to the private incident that Rodrick uses as leverage.

Chirag Gupta (Minor)

First appears in chapter 5

A small classmate who has been away and returns to school. Greg turns Chirag's absence into an extended joke by encouraging other students to pretend that Chirag is still not there.

Scotty Douglas (Minor)

First appears in chapter 7

A young boy assigned to perform with Greg in the school talent show. His age and limited stage experience leave Greg with a very different act from the one he imagined.

Bill Walter (Minor)

First appears in chapter 8

The lead singer of Löded Diper and one of Rodrick's bandmates. Bill is older than the other members and represents the rock-star future Rodrick imagines for himself.
