Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules: Enhanced Edition recap

Greg begins a new school year with Rodrick threatening to reveal an embarrassing incident from Greg's summer. Their mother tries to improve the brothers' relationship with Mom Bucks, a reward currency for chores and good behavior. When their parents leave town, Rodrick throws a party and confines Greg to the basement. The brothers then cooperate to hide the evidence, including replacing a marked bathroom door, and their shared secret briefly brings them closer. A developed photograph eventually exposes the party. Rodrick is punished but still performs with Löded Diper at the talent show, where the family video highlights their mother's enthusiastic dancing rather than the band. Rodrick retaliates by spreading Greg's summer story at school. The tale becomes so exaggerated in circulation that it improves Greg's reputation instead of ruining it, leaving the brothers back in their ordinary uneasy relationship.

Previously: Greg Heffley entered middle school determined to rise in popularity, while repeatedly taking his kindhearted friend Rowley for granted. After Greg abused his Safety Patrol position and let Rowley take the blame, the boys fell out. They reconciled only after older teenagers forced Rowley to eat the infamous moldy Cheese and Greg claimed responsibility for removing it, accepting the resulting ridicule himself. At home, Greg continued to deal with his older brother Rodrick's pranks and his younger brother Manny's favored status.

Greg starts another school year worried that Rodrick will tell everyone about something humiliating that happened during Greg's summer visit to Grandpa at Leisure Towers. Rodrick refuses to reveal the story immediately, preferring the leverage created by the threat. At home, Susan tries to encourage responsibility and brotherly cooperation by issuing Mom Bucks for chores and good behavior. Greg looks for ways to benefit from the system, while Rodrick treats school, household rules, and almost everything outside his band as an inconvenience.

When Susan and Frank leave town, Rodrick holds a large party at the house and locks Greg in the basement for much of it. After the guests leave, Greg and Rodrick discover that someone wrote on a bathroom door. They clean the house and replace the marked door with another from the basement, hoping their parents will not notice. Because exposing the party would implicate them both, the brothers share a secret and become unusually cooperative. Their parents sense that something has changed, but the initial inspection of the house does not reveal what happened.

The party cover-up begins to weaken as small inconsistencies draw attention. Greg also pursues his own school schemes, including persuading classmates to act as though Chirag Gupta is invisible after Chirag returns from an absence. The joke lasts long enough to bring parental intervention, and Greg's attempt to apologize reveals how little attention he paid to the person he targeted. Meanwhile, the Mom Bucks experiment creates new opportunities for both older brothers to manipulate the rules rather than adopt the habits Susan intended.

The school talent show becomes important to both brothers. Rodrick expects Löded Diper's performance to advance the band's ambitions, while Greg becomes involved in an act with the much younger Scotty Douglas and finds that his own plans for the stage are shrinking. At home, a roll of film connected to the party becomes dangerous evidence. When it is developed, a photograph finally confirms what Rodrick did, ending the brothers' ability to maintain their cover story. Rodrick is punished and blames Greg for failing to keep their secret secure.

Despite his punishment, Rodrick is permitted to play with Löded Diper in the talent show. Susan dances enthusiastically in the audience, and the video meant to showcase the band instead gives much of its attention to her. Rodrick holds Greg responsible and reveals Greg's summer secret: Greg accidentally entered the women's restroom at Leisure Towers and was chased out. The story changes as it spreads through school, becoming a tale in which Greg intentionally entered a high-school girls' locker room. That version raises rather than damages his standing. Rodrick's threat is exhausted without producing the humiliation he promised, and the brothers finish the book back in their normal pattern of rivalry after their brief alliance over the party.

A photograph from Rodrick's party exposes the brothers' cover-up, and their parents punish Rodrick. He is nevertheless allowed to perform with Löded Diper in the talent show. The recording of the performance focuses heavily on Susan dancing in the audience, so Rodrick does not get the promotional video he expected. Blaming Greg for the result, Rodrick finally tells other students the story he has withheld all year: during Greg's summer stay at Leisure Towers, Greg accidentally entered the women's restroom and had to flee. As the account passes through the school, its details change until Greg is credited with deliberately entering a girls' locker room at a high school. The distorted version makes him seem daring rather than ridiculous, so Rodrick's revenge fails to cause the intended humiliation. The brothers return to their familiar rivalry, but their temporary cooperation over the party shows that they can protect each other when their interests align.
