Sorcerer lawyer Lucas Cortez offers help, challenging Paige's inherited distrust of sorcerers. As the pressure spreads through courts, neighbors, media, and the supernatural community, the American Coven values secrecy over defending Paige. She and Lucas discover that escaped half-demon Leah O'Donnell is driving the attacks and using the Cabal's claim for her own purposes. The final confrontation kills both Kristof and Leah, ending the immediate custody campaign. Paige keeps Savannah but breaks with the Coven that abandoned them. She and Lucas become partners and begin a relationship, forming an independent household for Savannah beyond the old division between witches and sorcerers.

Previously: a human-backed research compound captured and experimented on supernatural people, proving that exposure could lead to organized imprisonment and exploitation. The compound was destroyed and its surviving captives freed, but witch leader Ruth Winterbourne died during the rescue. Her daughter Paige took responsibility for young witch Savannah Levine. Leah O'Donnell, the half-demon whose collaboration contributed to Ruth's death, escaped the compound and remained at large.

Paige Winterbourne is trying to fulfill two roles inherited after her mother's death: leader of the American Coven and guardian to thirteen-year-old Savannah Levine. Savannah is exceptionally powerful, impatient with restrictions, and still carrying the effects of captivity and bereavement. Their unsettled household is challenged when the Nast Cabal asserts that Kristof Nast, Savannah's biological father, should have custody. The claim is not merely private. Cabals are wealthy sorcerer families that treat gifted descendants as assets, while the Coven teaches witches to fear sorcerers and avoid their institutions. Paige refuses to hand Savannah over and prepares to defend the home Ruth intended for her.

The custody dispute expands into a campaign against Paige's fitness as a guardian. Strange occult displays and complaints around her home create human witnesses and make ordinary authorities more willing to believe that Savannah is in danger. Lucas Cortez, a sorcerer and lawyer, offers to help. Paige initially sees his lineage as another Cabal complication, but his careful work and willingness to respect Savannah's wishes distinguish him from the Nast representatives. The Coven elders urge Paige to avoid attention, yet their advice gives her little way to answer accusations deliberately designed for public view. Savannah wants to fight back with magic, forcing Paige to balance protection with the secrecy every supernatural person relies upon.

Paige and Lucas investigate the incidents instead of treating them as random hostility. The pattern combines Cabal pressure, staged signs of dangerous witchcraft, and knowledge of supernatural abilities. Public suspicion grows around Paige, and the legal process gives the accusations consequences even when no one can openly explain the real magic behind them. Lucas becomes both advocate and ally, while Paige begins separating his conduct from the prejudices she learned about all sorcerers. The Coven's fear of exposure makes its elders increasingly reluctant to defend their leader. Savannah resents being discussed as property by adults and uses her own power when she feels Paige's ordinary remedies are failing.

Evidence points beyond a straightforward attempt by Kristof Nast to claim his daughter. Leah O'Donnell, still free after the compound's destruction, is using her telekinetic power and knowledge of Paige's vulnerabilities to intensify the campaign. Her interference makes staged phenomena look like uncontrolled witchcraft and keeps the human authorities focused on Paige. Sean Nast, Savannah's half-brother, shows more concern for Savannah herself than the Cabal position suggests, complicating the idea that every member of the family wants the same outcome. Paige and Lucas continue working together despite pressure from both of their communities, and their trust becomes personal as well as practical.

The American Coven responds to the publicity by protecting its own secrecy rather than standing behind Paige. Its elders object to her association with Lucas and to the risks created by an open fight with a Cabal. Paige's formal authority becomes less important than keeping Savannah safe, and she accepts that preserving her inherited office may be incompatible with challenging the people attacking them. Lucas also resists pressure attached to the Cortez name, offering skill and loyalty without asking Paige to enter his father's organization. Their investigation narrows toward Leah and the way she has exploited Kristof's custody claim for a more violent purpose.

Paige, Lucas, and Savannah are pushed into direct conflict with the people behind the campaign. Kristof's pursuit of custody has given Leah access to a powerful institution and repeated opportunities to isolate Savannah, but the Cabal's interest in the girl does not make Leah controllable. Kristof's claim to be acting as a father is tested against the danger his tactics have created. Paige relies on the broader range of magic and strategy she has developed with Lucas rather than the limited practices approved by the Coven. The confrontation now concerns survival as much as any court order, with Leah prepared to remove anyone who prevents her from controlling the outcome.

The final confrontation exposes Leah as the force driving the attacks around the custody dispute. The struggle kills Kristof Nast as the scheme he supported turns against him, and Leah is also killed, ending her pursuit of Paige and Savannah. Without Kristof and the manufactured case against Paige, the Nast Cabal's immediate effort to take Savannah collapses. Paige keeps guardianship, but the crisis completes her break with the American Coven, whose elders chose institutional secrecy over supporting her. She no longer measures her family by Coven approval. Lucas has repeatedly acted independently of the Cortez Cabal and earned Paige's trust; they acknowledge their attraction and become partners in both senses. Paige, Savannah, and Lucas finish the crisis as an unconventional household with connections across the supernatural divisions the Coven tried to preserve.

Leah's manipulation of the custody fight is exposed in the final confrontation. Kristof Nast is killed when the conflict he helped create turns against him, and Leah is also killed, ending the immediate campaign against Paige and Savannah. With Kristof gone and the scheme discredited, the Nast Cabal no longer has a viable claim that can remove Savannah from Paige. Paige has nevertheless lost her former place in the American Coven: its elders chose distance and secrecy when she needed support, and she will not return to their narrow rules. She retains guardianship of Savannah and accepts a life built through relationships beyond the Coven. Lucas has proven that his loyalty is personal rather than an extension of the Cortez Cabal, and he and Paige acknowledge their romantic partnership. The household that remains is smaller and less institutionally protected, but Paige and Savannah are together, Leah can no longer threaten them, and their ties to Lucas and the wider supernatural community offer a new foundation.
