Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz

By L. Frank Baum

Dorothy has come to California with Uncle Henry, and her second cousin Zeb, a boy who works on his uncle's ranch, collects her from a lonely railway siding in a buggy drawn by an old cab-horse named Jim, with her kitten Eureka travelling in a bird-cage. On the drive back an earthquake splits the ground beneath them, and horse, buggy and children drop into the earth. They float down into an underground country lit by six coloured suns and land in a city of glass houses whose cool, expressionless people, the Mangaboos, turn out to be vegetables grown on bushes. There they are joined by an old acquaintance of Dorothy's, the Wizard, who has fallen down the same crack in his balloon, and the party must find a way back to the surface. Baum's fourth Oz book, published in 1908, spends most of its length in the strange lands below ground.
