Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz recap

An earthquake in California drops Dorothy, her cousin Zeb, the horse Jim, and the kitten Eureka into a succession of countries beneath the earth. They meet Dorothy's old friend the Wizard, whose balloon has also fallen, and together escape the glass city of the vegetable Mangaboos. Their route passes through a valley of invisible people, a country of wooden Gargoyles, and a cavern of young dragons. When they can go no farther, Ozma magically carries them to Oz. After reunions and contests, Eureka is accused of eating one of the Wizard's tiny piglets, but the animal is found unharmed. The Wizard stays in Oz to learn magic, while Ozma sends homesick Zeb and Jim back to California and returns Dorothy and Eureka to Kansas.

Dorothy Gale has visited the Land of Oz more than once. On her first journey she befriended the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman and exposed the celebrated Wizard as an ordinary showman. On a later visit she met Ozma, the rightful young ruler of Oz, and helped restore the royal family of Ev. Dorothy has since returned to her Kansas home, but Ozma remains her friend.

While visiting relatives in California, Dorothy rides from the railway station with her young cousin Zeb, his horse Jim, and her kitten Eureka. An earthquake opens the road beneath them, and the entire buggy falls into a glowing underground country. Jim and Eureka discover that they can speak there. The travelers reach a city of glass inhabited by the Mangaboos, people who grow on plants rather than being born. A balloon soon descends carrying Dorothy's old friend the Wizard of Oz. The Mangaboos blame the strangers for damage in their city, and the travelers realize that they must find another way home.

Dorothy, Zeb, the Wizard, Jim, and Eureka escape the Mangaboos through a dark passage. They emerge in the Valley of Voe, whose people and dangerous bears are invisible because of a magical fruit. With help from friendly inhabitants, the party crosses the valley without being caught by the bears. A Braided Man living alone among the cliffs supplies food and explains some of the strange lands around them. Still searching for a route toward the surface, the travelers enter a country inhabited by wooden Gargoyles, who attack intruders despite being unable to speak.

The travelers fight their way out of the Gargoyles' country and cross a cavern occupied by young dragons whose larger parents are away. At last they reach a place from which no ordinary escape seems possible. Dorothy calls on Ozma, trusting that her friend may be watching through the Magic Picture. Ozma uses the Magic Belt to bring the whole company to the Emerald City. Dorothy and the Wizard reunite with their Oz friends, while Zeb and Jim marvel at a land where beings such as the Scarecrow and Sawhorse are alive.

In Oz, Jim races the Sawhorse but cannot beat the tireless enchanted creature. A more serious dispute begins when one of the Wizard's nine tiny piglets vanishes and Eureka is accused of eating it. Ozma oversees a trial, and the kitten's own evasive answers make her look guilty. The Wizard finally produces the missing piglet alive from his pocket, proving that Eureka did not eat it. He decides to remain in Oz and learn genuine magic from Glinda. Zeb and Jim prefer their familiar California home, so Ozma sends them back to the ranch with the Magic Belt. Dorothy and Eureka are likewise returned safely to Kansas, ending the adventure with every traveler where he or she most wishes to be.

Ozma brings Dorothy and her companions safely to Oz, where Zeb and Jim meet Dorothy's extraordinary friends. Jim races the Sawhorse and learns that an enchanted wooden horse has advantages an ordinary animal cannot match. Suspicion then falls on Eureka when one of the Wizard's nine tiny piglets disappears. At a formal trial the kitten is found guilty after seeming to admit the deed, but the Wizard produces the missing piglet alive from his coat pocket and clears her. The Wizard chooses to remain in Oz and study real magic under Glinda. Zeb is too homesick for ordinary life to settle in the fairyland, while Jim also longs for his familiar stable. Ozma uses the Magic Belt to send Zeb and Jim back to their California ranch and Dorothy and Eureka home to Kansas. The underground party therefore separates safely, with Dorothy able to visit her friends in Oz again and the Wizard at last becoming one of them.
