Previously: Hadjar Darkhan survived decades of warfare, cultivation, and conflict with powers far beyond the mortal world. He carries an ancient soul fragment associated with the First Darkhan and was trained by Orune, whose legacy continues to shape his path. The wider world regards Hadjar as a legendary swordsman, but his victories have left him questioning the cost of endless advancement and bloodshed. Hadjar's closest bonds include a powerful white tigress who has accompanied him for years and figures from earlier struggles whose ambitions still reach across kingdoms. Morgan is dead. The gods and the Seventh Heaven also remain entangled with Hadjar's fate. At the opening of this volume, Hadjar has withdrawn from public life rather than resolved those larger conflicts.

So far this book: Gustaf, a wandering swordsman, arrives in Sedent hoping to challenge its reclusive master. The master proves to be Hadjar Darkhan, alive despite his supposed death and living as an aged, scarred teacher. Hadjar defeats a powerful old friend with a cherry twig and accepts Gustaf as a disciple without imposing special terms. His school welcomes anyone, and teaching others has become part of his attempt to discover a sword style that is truly his own. Hadjar's visiting friend is also a senior general. He reports that cultivators from all seven empires are gathering south of Sakashim under a white-haired leader who plans a united war against the Ruby Palace. Hadjar recognizes that the campaign may serve ambitions beyond its declared enemy and could unleash further wars after victory. He refuses the summons, choosing his secluded school and unfinished personal path over another vast conflict. The general leaves angry, while Hadjar remains in Sedent with his disciples and deceptively small white feline companion.

Hadjar's simulations show that ordinary training cannot save him: he has only a little more than fifty years to create a personal style and undo the deadly limit imposed by Orune's technique. Before he can solve that problem, a grievously wounded half-demon hunter reaches his school with demonic pursuers behind her. Hadjar and his tiger companion stabilize her damaged energy body, and Hadjar destroys the attacking vanguard. Sedent's governor explains that the hunter was hired to investigate the Nightmare Trench, which is blamed for a spreading regional blight. He pressures Hadjar to assist if the school is to remain welcome in the city. Hadjar and the hunter test one another in a duel, confirming that his aged body still conceals extraordinary control even though he has not drawn his true sword for decades. The hunter then reveals what lies below the trench: a separate Demon City where humans are enslaved, armored guards protect a fortified castle, and a demon ruler holds power. She survived almost six months in hiding there before escaping. Hadjar now faces a hidden realm rather than a simple local disturbance.

Hadjar, the demon hunter, and the white tigress travel to the Nightmare Trench. Hadjar plans to use the hunter's blood to pass as her demon husband, but the crossing first subjects him to visions. The First Darkhan shows him an ancient memory of serving Durger and directs him toward the Demon City lord for knowledge about the Pool of Many Reflections. Inside the artificial world beyond the trench, Hadjar learns that the lord is a Heaven Emperor preparing the Trial of the Heavens and Earth in pursuit of immortality. The hunter favors killing him during the trial, while Hadjar develops a broader plan. Disguised as a married demon couple, they gather complaints about taxation, merchants, and slave prices. Hadjar enters the city as an alchemist, surveys its streets as they rearrange every twelve hours, and notices that its sewers and waterworks remain fixed. He then contaminates the water with dust from his blue blade and opens a free clinic that secretly provides the cure. The resulting epidemic makes residents depend on his healer identity and prompts the afflicted city lord to summon him into the castle.

A Heaven Emperor valet detects Hadjar's concealed sword mastery but permits his alchemist disguise to stand. Hadjar treats the Demon City lord and learns that the ruler will soon attempt his heavenly trial during a bloody eclipse. As payment, Hadjar receives information about the Pool of Many Reflections. The lord also boasts of an earlier crossing into the human world and admits killing the golden-haired mother of Hadjar's brother, giving Hadjar a personal reason to end him. Hadjar and the hunter move from manufactured illness to manufactured scarcity. They decide to exploit the city's fragile food supply, and Hadjar burns four upper-district warehouses while leaving the poor district's stores intact. An axe-wielding demon tracks him through the disguise. Hadjar wins, but the exertion badly strains his aging body, and the attacker destroys his own energy center rather than reveal more. The hunter admits the dead demon was her uncle and that she concealed the true purpose of her mission. Her missing sister may be imprisoned in the city, which is being prepared as an outpost for a future Demon Parade. Hadjar and the hunter intercept the final seasonal food caravan, facing disciplined guards rather than ordinary refugee defenders. Hadjar's wind-and-sword images break their formation, and Dragon Storm destroys the remaining resistance, but every major technique worsens his condition. During the aftermath, Hadjar witnesses another memory. Ash, an ancient wizard, acknowledges that his failed war against the Seventh Heaven disrupted the four-world boundary. The First Darkhan interprets the coming crisis as another recurring Demon Parade and declares that Hadjar will eventually have to fight Ash, an opponent even the First Darkhan could not defeat.

The caravan battle leaves Hadjar unconscious for four days, nearly blind, and with only a few years of life remaining. He nevertheless stays in the Demon City. After helping starving residents, he provokes the lord's valet and accepts arrest on a false debt charge so he can be sent to the quarries. His seizure becomes the spark for open revolt, and he deliberately frames the guards for a child's death to ensure the uprising spreads. At the quarry, Hadjar learns that the hunter's missing sister died in a rockslide. The rebels time their attack to the city lord's heavenly trial, and the hunter brings Hadjar to the gate. She holds off the valet while Hadjar attacks the lord, but his weakened strike fails. As he falls, Hadjar finally understands his personal path as music expressed through his blade. His youth, sight, cultivation, and sword return, and he names the new path the Music of the Wind Sword. Hadjar severs the finger bearing the lord's protective ring. The next heavenly sword kills the lord and destroys the gate, the palace foundation, and much of the city. Hadjar and the hunter escape to the mortal world, where his tigress confronts them.

Hadjar's white tigress reveals that Orune trained her and left her a sword. Jealous of the demon hunter, she challenges Hadjar, but he refuses to fight and lets her blade pierce him. He tells her that he loves her as a daughter and that she must choose her own path. She departs, leaving Hadjar wounded beside the hunter. The pair reach a remote border village after Hadjar kills a dire bear that attacked its hunters. The demon hunter treats the wounded, and the village chief gives them shelter for winter. Hadjar's damaged meridian prevents proper combat for months, so he works fields and learns carpentry while his companion becomes the village healer. An ancient emissary of the demon prince confirms that Hadjar broke his own meridians deliberately. He warns that the destroyed outpost may lead the prince to open uncontrolled portals and that Hadjar's peaceful refuge will endanger those around him. His tiger companion sides with Erhard's belief that strength alone preserves choice. When Hadjar insists on a mortal future of family and service, she declares that the warrior she loved is gone and leaves him. Erhard then forces Hadjar into a sequence of memories. As conqueror of the Hundred Kingdoms, Erhard ruled through terror before attempting to stop expanding. A dragon ambassador later demanded another campaign to secure land for a growing dragon population. Erhard chose peace and his pregnant wife instead, hoping eventually to pass on the crown and retire. The refusal enabled a conspiracy: the ambassador exploited a loophole in the ruler's oath, rebel knights murdered Erhard's wife, and a dagger placed Erhard in a deathlike magical sleep. Erhard presents this betrayal as proof that a powerful leader cannot abandon war without exposing loved ones to the consequences.

Erhard spares Hadjar and his wife but predicts they will meet on a future battlefield. After the tiger companion's departure, a novice of Durger approaches her. Hadjar remains in the village, embraces restraint, and builds an ordinary life through hunting, repairs, and aid to poorer neighbors. Nearly eight months pass as he and his wife plan a larger home and family. A bandit group tries to extort Hadjar and threatens his wife. He defeats their leader without killing him and leaves to report the men to the guards. Before he goes, his wife reveals that she is pregnant with their son. Hadjar chooses the name Nero Darkhan and resolves to give the child an honorable life unlike his own. His hope lasts only until he senses danger and races home. The house has been wrecked, and his wife is sealed inside an ice sarcophagus. Hadjar can still sense both her soul and Nero's, proving that they remain alive, but an unseen speaker stops him from striking the prison.

The Lord of Nightmares identifies the prison as Icy Sorrow, a flower from Durger's garden that binds life, energy, will, and soul. Breaking it would shatter the captives' souls. A letter reveals that Hadjar's estranged daughter imprisoned his family and went to the Seventh Heaven to serve the god of war, demanding that Hadjar reach her. The Lord of Nightmares says the scheme may be intended to turn Hadjar into a weapon against the Jasper Emperor, but offers a possible cure: the opposing fire flower. Hadjar travels to the spirit world's Dark Woods, where the keeper refuses his request and consumes the fire flower. Hadjar fights the Shi in its own domain and decapitates it, but the forest sustains the keeper. The Summer Court queen then prevents Hadjar from using the Lord of Nightmares' fire-staff splinter. She admits ordering the keeper to withhold the flower and says Icy Sorrow will kill Hadjar's wife and child in six centuries. The Lord of Nightmares hides the prison in a protected ice palace. Unable to obtain the flower, Hadjar abandons peace, vows to reach the Seventh Heaven, and sets out for the Path Through the Stars as a route toward godhood.

Hadjar climbs the 7,777 steps to the Magic Dawn Pavilion and demands an audience with its sage. A mentor tries to stop him with dragon true-word magic, but Hadjar analyzes the unfamiliar spells and places his sword at the mentor's throat. The sage, an old acquaintance, intervenes and agrees to work with Hadjar against the Dragon Emperor. Hadjar needs access to the imperial treasury, while the sage seeks revenge for the Emperor's murder of his daughter and grandson. Their plan uses the coming Ruby and Dragon festival. Hadjar must win the Hero Challenge, protect the Emperor's daughter during a delegation to the Ruby Mountains, and return her safely. The Emperor's oath would then grant Hadjar one wish, allowing him to request entry to the treasury and seek the Path Through the Stars. In the Ruby Palace, Hadjar sees the Dragonlands' extraordinary wealth and military strength and learns that his scarlet sword is a divine predatory weapon that grows by consuming spirits. He enters the contest as a commoner. The Dragon Emperor, however, already recognizes Hadjar, knows the treasury is his objective, suspects the pavilion sage's plot, and deliberately chooses to let Hadjar proceed because he intends to use him first.

The Dragon Emperor's daughter opens the Hero Challenge, and ninety-six candidates enter its initial free-for-all. Safety amulets immediately remove eight of them, leaving eighty-eight contestants to continue without artifacts. Hadjar avoids the opening fighting by moving unseen through the wind. An armored contestant then uses a powerful ice technique to eliminate nearly everyone else, forcing Hadjar to answer with his wind-and-dragon sword style. He breaks the ice assault and reaches the final as the only remaining opponent. The armored finalist wields a divine ice sword and a heavy-sword technique that nearly overwhelms Hadjar. His Dragon's Dawn attack exposes her as the formidable woman excluded from the contest by tradition. Officials remove her for entering in disguise, leaving Hadjar the winner. He becomes the imperial princess's appointed protector and swears a life-binding oath under ancient law to return her safely from the Ruby Mountains. The victory advances his plan to earn access to the treasury and obtain the Path Through the Stars, but it also binds his life to a mission that has not begun. His wife and unborn Nero remain imprisoned in Icy Sorrow, the six-century rescue deadline continues, and the Dragon Emperor knowingly waits behind the arrangement.

Hadjar's wife and their unborn son Nero remain alive but soul-bound inside Icy Sorrow. The Lord of Nightmares hides the prison in an ice palace, and the fire flower is unavailable after the Summer Court queen orders the Dark Woods keeper to consume it. Hadjar therefore accepts a six-century deadline to reach the Seventh Heaven, confront his estranged daughter, and rescue his family. He pursues godhood through the Path Through the Stars. The Magic Dawn Pavilion sage joins Hadjar in a plot against the Dragon Emperor. Hadjar wins the Hero Challenge when his armored opponent is exposed as the woman barred by tradition, then takes a life-binding oath to escort the imperial princess to the Ruby Mountains and return her safely. Success should earn a wish that can open the Emperor's treasury, although the Emperor recognizes Hadjar and is deliberately allowing the scheme to advance. Erhard remains at war with the Dragonlands, Hadjar's tiger companion has left and may be drawn into Durger's service, and the demon prince's response to the destroyed Demon City gate remains unresolved.
