Book 4 of the Dragon Heart series finds Hadjar posing as an ordinary traveler in a desert border town, competing for one of two guard positions on a caravan crossing the Sea of Sand on its way to the Empire. Once hired alongside the shadow-wielding Einen, he learns that the caravan's route runs straight into an advancing desert war: a warlord's campaign toward Mage City, an ancient ruin whose fabled library will open only when two comets cross paths, is scattering refugees and bandits into the caravan's path. When his wanted identity as a fugitive general surfaces among the caravan's leadership, Hadjar is asked for battlefield advice rather than turned in, and begins scouting the dangers ahead alongside his new companions.
