In short (whole book)

Hadjar joins a caravan crossing the Sea of Sand and forms a durable partnership with Einen. After raids, a tribal duel, and the defense of a sentient oasis, Hadjar earns the name Darkhan, gains the sword Mountain Wind, and masters a brief call upon his Dark Storm dragon inheritance. The caravan owner then reveals a hidden expedition to Mage City for a legendary god-making elixir and forces the guards to participate. During an attack by soldiers disguised as bandits, an illusionist posing as Ilmena kills the owner, abducts Serra, and summons a sand dragon. A Black General-linked manifestation repels the dragon, while Einen carries the exhausted Hadjar to Underworld City. The illusionist is the desert king's daughter, and Serra remains her father's captive as Hadjar awakens far away calling for her.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Hadjar is a Lydian fugitive and swordsman traveling toward the Empire. He carries the bracelets of dead companions and remains affected by those losses. Azrea travels with him and acts as a check when anger or revenge threatens his judgment. The dragon Traves is linked to Hadjar's heart and serves as a source of cultivation guidance. These ties and unresolved burdens accompany Hadjar as he approaches the Sea of Sand.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

Hadjar reaches a border town seeking affordable passage across the Sea of Sand toward the Empire. He enters a difficult guard selection run by Shakar, the caravan's Heaven Soldier security chief. Shakar's nephew Shakh, the lightning-fast dagger fighter Ilmena, and a shadow-wielding islander are the other finalists. Hadjar defeats Shakh after a dangerous duel, while the islander wins the first available position. The islander later introduces himself as Einen and displays an ability to hide even from Hadjar and Azrea's senses. Hadjar and Einen agree to travel as companions. When two guards disappear, Shakar also takes Ilmena into the force. The recruits join a caravan of more than a thousand travelers. They receive security and welfare duties in its central section, meet vanguard leader Kharad, and see the caravan's exceptionally powerful elderly owner. At sunset the expedition leaves the pass and enters the Sea of Sand for a journey expected to last three years.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

A month into the crossing, Hadjar and Einen suspect that the caravan command is hiding a major danger. A wanted portrait exposes Hadjar as General Hadjar Traves of Lidus, believed dead and sought by the Empire. Rather than claim the reward, the caravan leaders ask for his military advice. They explain that desert forces are converging on the route as Prince Sankesh advances toward Mage City. Hadjar and Einen join Kharad's scouts with Ilmena and Shakh. Learning that hundreds of bandits block the route, the four infiltrate their camp. Hadjar recognizes its strongest fighter as a former mercenary who tortured him in childhood. Azrea stops him from killing the defeated man in helpless rage, and Hadjar instead allows an armed final exchange before killing him. The group destroys the camp and frees its captives. When Ilmena and Shakh object that the caravan cannot support them, Hadjar gives up his share of the spoils so they can purchase passage. The raid ends with the captives supplied and Hadjar's companions forced to reconsider him.

Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)

Hadjar follows a hidden map from his former tormentor's grave and opens an artifact-sealed cache containing wealth and a king-stage monster core. His group uses captured oasis frogs to reach the Dead Mountains, where they rejoin Kharad and enter negotiations with a powerful Bedouin tribe. Kharad offers supplies, valuables, and enslaved people for passage. When the tribal leader demands Azrea, Hadjar refuses to regard her as property and proposes a duel instead, staking his freedom and the caravan's route on the outcome. Einen reveals that his own father operated a slave fleet, but Hadjar does not hold him responsible for his father's actions. In a vision before the duel, Traves teaches Hadjar the Falling Leaf stance and helps him change how he carries memories of his past. Hadjar then faces the tribe's Heaven Soldier champion, Coyote, whose spinning blades and movement through sand leave him badly wounded. Hadjar's new techniques allow him to fight back, but a clash sends stone toward a young spectator. He shields the child, suffering critical wounds while the duel's result remains unsettled.

Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)

Hadjar finds a rich cache left by his former tormentor, including a king-stage monster core. At the Dead Mountains, the caravan negotiates with a Bedouin tribe by offering goods and enslaved people. When the tribal leader shows interest in Azrea, Hadjar refuses to treat her as property and stakes his freedom in a duel for passage. Traves begins teaching him the Falling Leaf stance in a vision. Hadjar remains outmatched by the tribe's Heaven Soldier champion, Coyote, but abandons a possible victory to shield a child from flying stone. The tribe accepts him for that choice, and its shaman gives him the name Darkhan and a protective mark. Hadjar later uses the monster core to awaken his spirit. At the next oasis, a thief and a magical current carry him onto a forbidden plateau. There he meets Ignis, the sentient being who is the oasis, forest, and pond. Ignis kills a divine spy that had followed Hadjar. Unable to attack mortals under ancient restrictions, she temporarily transforms Hadjar's sword and asks him to defend the settlement from an approaching bandit army.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

A vast bandit army led by a Spirit Knight attacks the oasis. Its commander claims the sheikh has taken something from him, but the ruler refuses to appear. Enemy bombardment breaches the magical barrier, and Hadjar and Einen join the defenders outside it. Ignis's enchantment lets Hadjar's ordinary sword strike with the force of an imperial weapon. Einen helps him kill a giant Heaven Soldier, then prevents battle rage from overwhelming him. With the defenders steadily losing to the enemy Spirit Knight, Hadjar organizes their remaining Heaven Soldiers around a single opening. He reaches for an echo of his sword spirit and launches a dragon-shaped attack despite wounds that leave him near collapse. His three-part Falling Leaf strike breaks through the commander's layered defenses without killing him. The oasis sheikh then reveals his own Spirit Knight power and finishes the wounded attacker with an arrow. The siege ends, but Hadjar is severely injured and his exhausted sword breaks after Ignis's temporary enhancement fades.

Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)

Hadjar survives the oasis battle. Sheikh Umar, the oasis ruler and a former student of the caravan owner, forgives his forbidden ascent because of his service but orders him to leave. As compensation, Umar permits one choice from his treasury. Ignis guides Hadjar to a heavy heaven-level sword, later called Mountain Wind, and Einen extracts him before Umar can intervene. Ignis then recognizes Hadjar as a descendant of the Black General and turns against him, though she cannot act beyond the oasis. Outside the settlement, Einen explains inherited nonhuman blood and reveals his own pearl-trout lineage. Hadjar admits that his inheritance comes from a dragon. With Einen prepared to kill him if he loses control, Hadjar enters a ritual dream to confront Traves. The dragon recounts the destruction of his Dark Storm village and tests Hadjar against the merciless strength of his former self. Hadjar cannot overpower him directly, but persists through devastating attacks and finds a way to wound the trial figure. Traves declares the test won and accepts Hadjar into the Dark Storm tribe.

Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)

Hadjar awakens from the inheritance trial with a Dark Storm mark over his heart. Traves teaches him to keep the dragon call secret. With Einen's help, Hadjar learns to sustain its power for only a few seconds, gaining greatly increased movement and striking force. The pair rejoin the caravan. A living Serra gives Hadjar a warm pink pebble and briefly speaks with an adult manner, while Einen warns that her apparent father treats her as valuable property. The caravan owner summons Hadjar and Einen and finally reveals the expedition's concealed purpose. Its route bends toward Mage City, where a legendary elixir is said to turn its drinker into a god. The owner's account says the elixir was created to free a woman imprisoned by the god of war, though the story remains only a legend. When the guards resist, the owner incapacitates them and uses Black Gates poison and its antidote as leverage. Hadjar, Einen, and the others submit under duress. Roughly three hundred people will join the year-long venture, and the owner reserves the elixir for himself.

Story so far - through chapter 73 (this book)

Hadjar and Einen suspect that the caravan owner's explanation conceals further plans. Before they can investigate, more than three thousand supposed bandits approach. The caravan forms a fortified camp, and Hadjar and Einen take the exposed western flank. They cut through the mounted attackers until a wind-using Heaven Soldier stops Hadjar. The opponent reveals himself as an officer of the desert king, proving that regular troops are hidden among the raiders. Badly wounded and nearly empty of energy, Hadjar briefly invokes his dragon heart, destroys an autonomous dagger artifact, and ultimately kills the officer with a new understanding of his bond with the sword. The caravan routs the remaining attackers, but the apparent victory is a trap. An illusionist has replaced Ilmena. She kills the caravan owner, abducts Serra, and summons a sand dragon. Dying, the owner identifies Serra as an ancient magical key connected to a library and asks Hadjar to use the gods' elixir to make her human. Hadjar swallows the dead divine messenger's body and releases a column of black energy as the dragon arrives.

Story so far - through chapter 77 (this book)

Hadjar's desperate act draws him into childhood memory, where Queen Elizabeth is confirmed as his mother and tells a tale linking a black-armored general to divine powers. In a separate vision, Hadjar encounters an overwhelming scarred figure with a black sword. At the caravan fortification, a black-armored manifestation emerges from the energy column and drives back the summoned sand dragon. Einen risks himself to pull the exhausted Hadjar away through shadow. They arrive badly injured at Underworld City. A red-haired disciple of the city's sage tries to kill the unconscious Hadjar, but an official stops her and takes both strangers inside. Einen remains unconscious, while Hadjar is detained under the sage's authority. Elsewhere, the desert king's army conquers and destroys a fortified city. The illusionist who replaced Ilmena is revealed as the king's daughter and presents Serra to him as the captured key. The king seeks immortality or godhood and retains Serra despite her warning that Hadjar will kill him. Hadjar awakens in Underworld City calling Serra's name. The true Ilmena's fate, the broken Mage City expedition, and Serra's rescue remain unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Hadjar kills the Heaven Soldier commanding the caravan's western attackers, exposing the supposed bandits as troops of the desert king. The victory immediately collapses when an illusionist who has replaced Ilmena murders the caravan owner, seizes Serra, and calls a sand dragon. The dying owner identifies Serra as an ancient magical key tied to a library and asks Hadjar to use the sought elixir to make her human. Hadjar consumes the body of a divine messenger in a desperate response. A black-armored manifestation drives back the dragon, and Einen removes the exhausted Hadjar through shadow to Underworld City. Both arrive injured, Einen unconscious and Hadjar subject to the city's judgment. The real Ilmena's fate is unknown. The caravan's expedition toward Mage City has lost its leader, and its survivors' position is unstated. The desert king's daughter delivers Serra to her father, whose army continues its conquests and whose ambition is immortality or godhood. Serra remains captive as Hadjar wakes in Underworld City calling her name.
