Book 5 of the Dragon Heart series opens with Hadjar and his companion Einen waking captive and immobilized beneath Underworld City after a violent journey through a spatial rift. Stripped of freedom and fitted with power-suppressing collars, they are offered a narrow way out: a single dangerous year fighting unknown creatures in the city's research-chamber pits in exchange for eventual freedom and the return of their belongings. As Hadjar builds a wary reputation among the city's outsiders and researchers, old grudges and new rivalries complicate his search for a path back to the surface and toward the Empire's true cultivation teachings.
