In short (whole book)

Hadjar and Einen survive captivity beneath Underworld City and join a dangerous expedition to Mage City's lost library. Traveling with mistrustful specialists, they cross the Sea of Sand, encounter surviving allies and enemies, and use Serra's stone to penetrate the city's defenses. Inside the library, Glen betrays the party to Sankesh, whose pursuit of a god-making elixir grew from abandonment, enslavement, and the loss of Aisha. Hadjar advances to heaven soldier, destroys the elixir and the island's power, and survives when Serra sacrifices herself to send him away with one remaining drop. Sankesh dies as his cultivation path collapses. Back in Underworld City, the sage reveals himself as the true Rahaim and explains that Hadjar's incomplete soul blocks the true cultivation path. Rahaim rewards Hadjar and Einen with recommendations to Holy Sky School, where they arrive at the close.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Hadjar traveled with Einen and the tigress Azrea. Serra had become important to Hadjar, and his journey had also bound his fate to a dragon and to questions about powers beyond ordinary cultivation. A passage through a spatial rift ended the previous stage of the journey and separated the companions from familiar ground.

Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)

Hadjar awakens after three weeks in an energy-draining prison beneath Underworld City, immobilized beside Einen. Azrea escaped when they arrived, but neither man knows where she has gone. A city official rejects Hadjar's attempt to invoke Serra's name and says Tilis seeks revenge for Serra's death. Servants led by Salif release the prisoners only to collar, bridle, and march them deeper into the settlement. Hadjar and Einen establish that their captors need them alive, but an attempted reversal earns them further punishment. Karissa then presents the captured outsiders with three compulsory forms of service: decades as servants, years in the mines, or one dangerous year in the research chamber. Hadjar and Einen both select the research path, accepting its risks in exchange for eventual citizenship, freedom, and the return of their belongings.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

The research bracelets permit Hadjar and Einen to use power but punish any intention to harm a city resident. In the blue barracks, they recover their withheld weapons and refuse Glen's authority, leaving them isolated among hostile residents. Hadjar defeats an emerald wolf in his first pit trial, while Einen survives a giant beetle. Principal researcher Paris measures both men at yellow talent and suggests that the city's sage alone could teach the true cultivation path. Their small wages prove inadequate for the techniques sold at auction, and Tilis reinforces her belief that Hadjar caused Serra's disappearance. Paris offers a way out of routine arena service: field expeditions into the Sea of Sand, where specimens and artifacts might bring both resources and freedom. Hadjar and Einen accept, hoping the assignment will also lead to knowledge and escape. When they return to the barracks, however, Hadjar finds Einen tortured and collared by Glen's faction. Glen surrounds Hadjar and tries to force the confrontation the newcomers had previously avoided.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Hadjar answers Glen's attack by killing most of the barracks faction before Karissa uses the slave bracelets to halt the fight. After treating Einen's injuries, the pair spend two months surviving pit battles and preparing for field work. Paris then assembles a deeply divided expedition: Hadjar, Einen, Glen, Karissa, Salif and his young companion, plus Ramukhan and Tilis. Their objective is Mage City's lost library, whose location may become accessible when two red comets converge. Sankesh's competing force, altered beasts, ancient traps, and regions that suppress projected techniques all threaten the search. Each participant bargains for payment. Hadjar secures removal of his restraint and a future audience with the sage, while Einen asks for cores and artifact access. Paris assigns roles based on the travelers' abilities: Salif will preserve maps, Glen will track, Ramukhan and Tilis will manage spells, and Hadjar and Einen will cover conditions that limit conventional magic. Azrea returns before departure, but distrust remains central to the group, especially between the two companions and Glen.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

The expedition leaves Underworld City and enters the Sea of Sand under Ramukhan's command. In the black sands of the Demon's Heart, Hadjar, Einen, and Glen fight powerful beasts. Hadjar develops Falling Leaf and briefly draws on dragon blood to kill a scorched falcon, only for a wounded dragon to appear. Harlim, an Immortal of the House of Golden Heavens, intervenes and removes the encounter from everyone else's memory. He tells Hadjar that his former shadow-master faces judgment and leads him into a blood oath: Hadjar must honor that master through the House of Blade Fury or lose his soul. Harlim also warns against the reputed god-making elixir and privately redirects the search to Stone Trees Oasis. Hadjar later tells Einen what was erased. At the oasis, Ramukhan reveals that Rahaim once ruled the Pearl of the Sands and calls Serra Rahaim's granddaughter. Hadjar withholds his suspicion that Serra is more than human and may be Mage City's key. While he meditates alone, an unknown attacker accompanied by a sand dog disarms and captures him.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

Hadjar's captor is Shakh, now leader of the few survivors from Rahaim's caravan. The devastated group believes Hadjar betrayed them, but the mortally wounded Shakar insists that he could not have broken the contract. The survivors explain that Ilmena was found dead, the caravan was destroyed amid a clash between a black spirit and a dragon, and Sankesh later overwhelmed what remained. They also reveal that Serra is alive and serves as a living map, guide, and key connected to Mage City. After Shakar dies, Shakh gives Hadjar Rahaim's letter. Einen recognizes it as a cipher-map, and the two groups agree to cooperate while concealing the meeting from the Underworld City party. Hadjar then attempts a dangerous advancement. Karissa, Tilis, and Ramukhan contain and hide the power released by his internal struggle. He succeeds in reaching the new soul stage, gains sharper perception of energy, and removes the dissonance from Mountain Wind. His improved strike demonstrates power far beyond what the surrounding practitioners expect from his nominal stage.

Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)

Einen reveals the decoded map to the expedition and swears that it is genuine. The party follows it toward ruins in the likely Mage City region, where Sankesh's daughter invites Hadjar to meet her father alone. Hadjar enters a camp holding hundreds of heavily equipped soldiers and learns that Sankesh knows his past as a general of Lidus and a kingslayer. Sankesh offers to remove Hadjar's restraint, accelerate his advancement, and give him military command. Hadjar rejects both the offer and Sankesh's belief that strength should determine who deserves to live. Bound by hospitality from killing his guest outright, Sankesh orders a northern heaven soldier to challenge Hadjar. The duelist uses ice, a blizzard, and strong artifacts to wound and obscure himself from Hadjar. Drawing on perception, prior training against Einen, and the wind and snow around him, Hadjar forces out the true opponent and kills him with Falling Leaf. Sankesh then tries to strike the exhausted victor, but his own followers enforce the rules of hospitality. Hadjar leaves gravely wounded and marked for pursuit.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

Einen retrieves the badly wounded Hadjar, who reports the scale of Sankesh's army and his belief that Serra is hidden nearby. During unconscious visions, Hadjar rejects an offer to abandon his ambitions and instead renews his determination to seek justice and reach the seventh heaven. His clues point the expedition toward a lake covered by fog at night. While incapacitated, he meets Traves, the dragon fragment bound to his soul, and develops Rustle in the Treetops as a defensive Light Breeze stance. Traves is then confronted by a black ancestral entity linked to Hadjar's inner sword and bloodline. After waking, Hadjar helps select a western lake protected by an anomaly that ignores mortals. Salif's young companion scouts it while magically disguised and finds a passage beneath the false bottom. Karissa prepares an ability-sealing potion so the practitioners can cross. Before entering, they take blood oaths against harming one another. Salif, the boy, and the sleeping Azrea remain at camp, while Hadjar, Einen, Glen, Karissa, Ramukhan, and Tilis descend through the lake into a concealed desert.

Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)

Inside the hidden desert, Einen reveals that he falsified his blood oath and quietly prepared safeguards against the other expedition members. A Spirit Knight-level sand creature nearly destroys the group until Hadjar, Einen, Karissa, Tilis, and Ramukhan coordinate their different powers. Ramukhan spends one of the sage's two seals to eliminate a second creature. Hadjar then heals Glen's damaged meridians, although Ramukhan's control of the blue bracelets exposes the limits of their supposed equality. Comparing the slain spirit's core with Serra's stone strengthens Hadjar's conclusion that Serra is a constructed being tied to Mage City. He also breaks the seal on the Black Gates patriarch's spatial ring and finds dangerous medicines, poison, wealth, and an ancient image of a black swordsman. Mage City's guardians annihilate another camp, while Serra's stone seems to guide Hadjar's party safely around further defenses. The travelers finally reach artificial mountains surrounding a hidden center. An unseen examiner recognizes Darkhan, questions Hadjar's priorities, and subjects the group to three riddles. Their answers dissolve the enclosing walls, clearing the first threshold into Mage City.

Story so far - through chapter 71 (this book)

An ancient golem admits the seekers to Mage City's citadel because one of them bears a Name. Sankesh's force, reduced to ten survivors, follows with Serra as a wounded captive. At the gates, Serra's stone protects the party and Hadjar's voice opens the way, but an ancient sorceress's memory separates him from the others. She identifies him as a descendant of the Black General and confirms that the General's sword exists within his soul. Hadjar refuses an offered escape and instead witnesses a memory of Mage City's fall, though the General's true identity remains unresolved. The memory gives him a blue plate, which works with Serra's stone to reveal the library entrance. After surviving collapsing stairs, enchantments, moving platforms, and lethal guardians, the party reaches the library proper. A childlike golem introduces herself as Serra's sister, then gives her name as List. With Sankesh minutes away, she offers each seeker assistance. The knowledge Hadjar wants has been destroyed, so he chooses an ancient tablet teaching meditation on the sword spirit and begins studying the Black General's image.

Story so far - through chapter 78 (this book)

Sankesh and his remaining fighters enter the library with captive Serra. He demands the divine elixir and another lost technique, then tortures List when she cannot provide them. Glen betrays Hadjar at knife point, but Einen wounds Glen and reveals Shakh's concealed allies. Sankesh takes Serra and List deeper into the complex while his northern head of security blocks pursuit. Serra calls Sankesh her younger brother, and his memories show that he is Rahaim's abandoned son. Rahaim once chose to rescue Serra after both children were captured, leaving the boy in slavery. The library fight divides. Shakh and his scouts engage Sankesh's daughter and her soldiers, while Hadjar and Einen struggle against the northern spirit knight. Sular and Kharad are killed, but Shakh decapitates Sankesh's daughter. Einen advances to the spear-wielder stage during the continuing battle. With direct attacks still failing, he positions three power-bearing artifact stones over the enemy. Hadjar breaks them open, causing a massive release of energy that kills the spirit knight and destroys the library hall. Hadjar shields Tilis from the collapse and falls critically wounded.

Story so far - through chapter 84 (this book)

Einen uses a rare extract to close Hadjar's worst wounds. Tilis accepts Hadjar's account that he did not kill Serra, but the surviving party is nearly unable to fight: its spellcasters have lost their principal artifacts, Shakh is badly injured, and the library island will soon collapse. Hadjar decides that Sankesh must be stopped from obtaining the elixir. When Einen refuses to leave him, Hadjar knocks his friend unconscious and sends the group toward the escape seal. In the power complex, Hadjar finds Serra alive beside a dying fellow golem. Sankesh nearly cuts Hadjar in half and destroys Mountain Wind, but Hadjar survives the apparent death and advances to heaven soldier. His black sword can now manifest physically, allowing him to contend with the much more experienced Spirit Knight. Under repeated attacks, Hadjar creates a new movement stance called Wind and begins wounding Sankesh, though he cannot overcome the enemy's strengthened body. Instead, he destroys the crystals supporting the flying island. A fragment of Mountain Wind breaks the final crystal and the elixir's shell. The vessel shatters, the elixir spills across crystal fragments, and the entire island begins to fall.

Story so far - through chapter 89 (this book)

The shattered elixir forces Sankesh to relive the purpose behind his pursuit of strength. As a boy, he was taken from the Sea of Sand and sold in the North. A village chief purchased him with Aisha, renamed him Aril, and made him responsible for her. They later became lovers, but a visiting leader's son assaulted Aisha while Aril was beaten for trying to intervene. When Aisha became pregnant, Aril abandoned her. He survived alone, found sun-cultivation teachings, and returned with power, only to learn that Aisha had died giving birth to their daughter. His later campaign and search for the elixir grew from a desire to create a world where strength would prevent such exploitation and separation. Faced with the elixir's ruin, he recognizes the failure of that path. His halberd spirit cracks, his cultivation collapses, and he dies. Serra then uses her nature as the library's key to force Hadjar away from the falling island. She remains behind, but secretly leaves one drop of elixir in his spatial ring. Hadjar survives the explosion and resolves to return to Underworld City.

Story so far - through chapter 90 (this book)

Three weeks after Mage City's destruction, Einen's party finds Hadjar. The survivors take another month to return to Underworld City, where Hadjar demands the audience promised before the expedition. The city's sage reveals that he is the real Rahaim, an ancient lord who left a golem in the Pearl of the Sands to manage the search for the library and care for Serra and his son. That substitute chose Serra when both children were captured, beginning the chain of abandonment and loss that shaped Sankesh. Rahaim also explains that the prophetic image of a dragon consuming the sun concerned the conflict between Hadjar and Sankesh. When he tests Hadjar's new ability to draw on external energy, he finds a fundamental obstacle: Hadjar's soul is incomplete, preventing him from following the true cultivation path despite his advancement to heaven soldier. As the expedition's reward, Rahaim gives Hadjar and Einen recommendations to Holy Sky School in the imperial capital. The two companions arrive at the school's gates, still seeking advancement and knowledge about the land of the immortals.

How does it end? (ending)

Hadjar reaches the collapsing library's power complex alone, survives an apparently fatal blow, and advances to heaven soldier. Unable to defeat Sankesh directly, he destroys the crystals sustaining the flying island and shatters the god-making elixir. Sankesh's memories reveal how abandonment by Rahaim, enslavement, Aisha's suffering, and the loss of their daughter shaped his pursuit of absolute strength. When that purpose fails, his cultivation path breaks and he dies. Serra uses her power as the library's key to expel Hadjar before the island explodes, remaining behind after placing one elixir drop in his ring. Einen's group finds Hadjar three weeks later. They return to Underworld City, where the sage identifies himself as the real Rahaim and explains the disastrous choice made by his golem. He also confirms that Hadjar's incomplete soul prevents him from using the true path of cultivation. Hadjar still carries the Black General's inheritance, the dragon-heart debt, and his House of Blade Fury oath. Rahaim's promised reward sends Hadjar and Einen to Holy Sky School, opening their next search for advancement and knowledge of the immortals.
