In short (whole book)
Hadjar returns to the Holy Sky School and joins Einen, Dora, Annis, and Tom in a search for Emperor Decatur's tomb. The expedition exposes imperial manipulation, a Winter Court fae, rival clans, assassins, and evidence that the tomb is actually the Last King's repository. Inside, Hadjar abandons revenge as his central purpose and adopts the identity North Wind. Dora is critically wounded saving Einen, while the First Darkhan coerces Hadjar into an inheritance pact that grants Flying Sword and prepares him as a future vessel. The repository's collapse reopens the demon gates. Einen and other allies carry Dora toward urgent treatment as Hadjar remains to defend the fort. Helmer destroys the invading horde for the Demon Prince and gives Hadjar its commander's core. Hadjar conceals this intervention, then leaves for two years of training on Storm Mountain with a new swordsman master.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Hadjar Darkhan survived war, loss, and repeated struggles against powers far above his cultivation. Known as the Mad General, he became a swordsman whose path is tied to an unusual neural network, the Black Blade, and a hostile presence lodged within his soul. His closest companion is Einen, a fellow warrior whose loyalty has endured danger and separation. Helmer, the Lord of Nightmares, has interfered in Hadjar's life and holds unresolved claims against him. Hadjar's earlier actions created enemies as well as allies, while the destruction of the Drunken Goose scattered members of a prior expedition and left lasting grievances.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Hadjar returns to the Holy Sky School as an advanced Heaven Soldier whose body is already comparable to a stronger cultivator. The school is preparing for imperial war games after a deadly attack, and Hadjar learns that Einen, Dora, and the Dinos siblings helped defend it. A map and key linked to Emperor Decatur's tomb have been recovered, giving Holy Sky disciples a short advantage in the coming search. Hadjar, Einen, and Dora leave for the Wastelands aboard Dora's flying ship, despite warnings that someone may be targeting Hadjar. A pirate frigate intercepts them. Einen boards the ship with Hadjar and sabotages its gunpowder hold, while Dora prevents the pirates from escaping. The captain admits that an unknown employer hired her crew to seize Hadjar, but her personal vendetta keeps her from naming that employer. Hadjar defeats her suicide attack, and he and Einen escape just before the frigate explodes. The immediate ambush ends, but the force behind the repeated attacks remains unidentified.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
The travelers reach the fortress guarding entry to the Wastelands and reunite with Hadjar's ancient tigress, who survived the earlier shipwreck. Annis and Tom join the expedition, forming an alliance based on necessity rather than trust. Dora reveals that the original companions have faced repeated assassination attempts and traced the attackers' chain of command back to the Holy Sky School, though the person responsible remains unknown. Hadjar has memorized the tomb map, and Einen may be able to reproduce the key. After the group enters the Wastelands, Hadjar encounters the hostile raven-like fragment within his soul. The fragment calls him a descendant and presents an unverified history of Erhard, its disciple. In that account, Erhard was revived before birth, became a prodigious warrior, killed his uncle, united the Hundred Kingdoms, and became the Last King before his empire fell and his enemies sealed him alive. The fragment claims that the supposed tomb of Emperor Decatur was built around Erhard's prison and offers Hadjar a sword technique hidden there. Hadjar cannot tell whether the offer is guidance or a trap.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
The expedition encounters dozens of blue-flamed guardians created as weapons in an ancient war. Ordinary attacks destroy only a few of them, and their fire wounds both physical and energy bodies. Annis reveals an extremely rare World River sword spirit, annihilating many guardians but collapsing from the damage it inflicts on her. When more enemies emerge, Hadjar refuses to abandon her. He joins willingly with his bird spirit through the ancestral path and releases an enhanced Black Wind that destroys the remaining formation. The effort stops his heart and leaves him near death, but the ancient tigress carries Hadjar and Einen away from the ruins. Hadjar eventually regains consciousness with grave physical injuries, while Annis begins recovering from severe damage to her energy channels. The group concludes that the map and key have recently awakened dormant defenses throughout the Wastelands. Their quest is no longer simply a race against rival cultivators - the artifacts themselves appear to be activating ancient dangers along the route.
Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)
The five travelers swear mutual secrecy over Annis's rare spirit and Hadjar's ancestral method, creating a fragile bond without removing their distrust. They learn that the history of the ancient war has been deliberately suppressed and that the seven empires answer to the Dragonlands. After avoiding a spirit-stage manticore, the group diverts toward red mountains. Annis tells Hadjar that her uncle murdered her parents and seized the Predatory Blades clan, leaving her and Tom alive in disgrace; revenge remains her driving purpose. Helmer then appears to Hadjar, admits manipulating an earlier affair, and warns him to survive an unexplained danger. In the mountains, Dora, Tom, and Annis disclose their hidden objective: Grevendor, an ancient site associated with the Last King's training. Their houses supplied artifacts and a secret map for this mission. A blizzard and confrontation force the nobles to share that map, but an enormous ice golem attacks before trust can be restored. Unable to defeat it, the party escapes by leaping into a ravine under Hadjar's protection and becomes trapped below.
Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)
The party follows the ravine to a concealed approach containing a flowering tree, a chasm, and a river of lethal celestial metal. Guided by information from the hostile fragment, Hadjar activates the entrance and reveals Grevendor beyond an invisible energy bridge. The bridge ends partway across, forcing Hadjar to continue on a rope while freezing pressure immobilizes his body and suppresses his sword power. He reaches the celestial-metal fumes and condenses enough material for the Path Through the Clouds technique. Elsewhere, a dragon official learns that this supposedly lost technique survives, kills the servant who brought the evidence, and decides to seize it before informing the Dragon Emperor. Hadjar then undertakes a dangerous advancement within his soul. Instead of following the technique exactly, he forges the celestial metal into protective dragon armor and incorporates his dragon call. Annis identifies him with the Mad General of legend while the others believe the process will kill him. Hadjar completes the transformation, advances to peak Heaven Soldier, and reaches the far side of the bridge. A powerful dragon pursuer is now searching for the unknown practitioner of his technique.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
The remaining travelers cross the energy bridge and reach Grevendor's sealed gates. Hadjar's neural network identifies sword movements hidden in the gate reliefs, and Annis performs the paired form with him to open the way. Inside, the group follows the nobles' map through ancient corridors tied to the Last King. An ice-armored spirit golem attacks with strength comparable to a lord. Hadjar, Tom, Dora, Einen, and Annis combine their techniques, but the construct withstands their strongest blows and repeatedly regenerates. Annis takes command of a coordinated assault. Tom accepts severe backlash to create an opening, Hadjar forces the golem's guard down, and Dora, Annis, and Einen strike together. The golem responds with a freezing ray that incapacitates Dora and wounds the others. Tom uses a rare fire artifact to thaw her and damage the construct, but it begins restoring itself again. Seeing no conventional path to victory, Hadjar takes a stimulant and drives the golem over the complex's exterior edge. Both fall into the chasm, leaving his companions unable to determine whether he survived.
Story so far - through chapter 57 (this book)
Hadjar awakens injured in a hidden ice hall ruled by a Winter Court fae. She controls his speech and movement, identifies his ancestry, and imprisons him in ice that suppresses his cultivation and artifacts. Helmer confirms that the fae is using Hadjar as bait. He offers an escape tool only if Hadjar accepts another unspecified future debt, and Hadjar agrees. The fae tries to make him submit by showing visions of his family and a possible death within a few years, but he refuses her offer of an eternal reunion. Einen, Dora, Annis, and Tom arrive before she can kill him. Using Helmer's staff splinter, Hadjar wounds the fae and takes the core she leaves behind. The victory exposes the nobles' concealed imperial mission: they came for the fae's core and expected Hadjar and Einen to emerge crippled or stripped of their abilities. Einen ends his personal friendship with Dora. Hadjar prevents the nobles from taking the core by force, then accepts Annis's claim through a sword-only duel. Although her formal technique initially outclasses him, he adapts, defeats her, and leaves Grevendor with Einen and the core.
Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)
Hadjar and Einen reunite with the ancient tigress and conclude that the wider plot may have placed Dora in danger as well as themselves. Helmer then takes both the fae core and the staff splinter under their existing agreement. He warns that a powerful family intends to kill Hadjar and keeps an eventual tournament obligation open. A week later, seven Dead Moon Clan assassins confront Hadjar and Einen under separate contracts, demanding their cultivation and an ancient-beast core. The leader's concealed movement technique overwhelms Hadjar, forcing him to let the neural network control his body temporarily. Its precise counterattacks kill one assassin and injure another, but Hadjar rejects permanent dependence on autonomous control even when the network predicts that taking command himself will be fatal. He merges his Quetzal spirit with the Black Blade and uses an enhanced Black Wind to kill two more attackers. The effort leaves him unconscious. The approach of many other cultivators forces the surviving assassins to withdraw, but their leader promises to return with a stronger clan technique. Hadjar and Einen survive, while the contracts against them remain active.
Story so far - through chapter 77 (this book)
After disabling the neural network's compulsory control, Hadjar begins using its battle simulations for training. He and Einen continue toward the tomb and find the key's discovery site covered with hundreds of dead cultivators. Tracking the new key-holders leads them into the custody of an Eternal Mountain Clan expedition. Hadjar avoids execution by claiming that he and Einen can recreate the encrypted tomb map. Thea, the sister of a deceased former ally, protects him from a hostile spearman and later shares a brief intimacy with him, though neither treats it as a commitment. Hadjar redirects the expedition into an ancient underground route while planning to steal the key. He lures a stone crocodile into the party and secretly disrupts their attempt to kill it, causing several deaths. Thea repudiates him when he admits that he intended the monster to eliminate the expedition. With Hadjar and Einen exposed and ready to fight, the junior heir chooses negotiation. He apologizes and offers equality for as long as their goals coincide. The result is a conditional truce inside the ancient sewer route, with every faction expecting eventual betrayal.
Story so far - through chapter 83 (this book)
Hadjar leads the uneasy alliance from the sewers into a ruined capital, where a mysterious light draws him to an abandoned temple of the god of war. An unnamed immortal servant explains that fairies belong to a wider system and says Hadjar's own path has been manipulated. He admits that he also wants to influence Hadjar and offers him the god of war's permanent mark, promising immense power. Hadjar refuses divine patronage and declares that he will reach the Seventh Heaven through his own efforts. Afterward, the same light approaches Derek, a maimed former companion who has sworn to kill Hadjar. At midday, the expedition follows a magical bird to the mound marked on Hadjar's map. Tom, Annis, and Dora ambush the Eternal Mountain group with a binding net, intending to seize both map and key. Hadjar and Einen use the confusion to bind the Dinos group in turn. They reveal that they retained the real artifacts all along, substituting copies while their rivals handled them. Leaving both competing groups trapped, Hadjar and Einen take the authentic map and key into the supposed tomb.
Story so far - through chapter 90 (this book)
The mound proves to be a spatial artifact holding the Last King's repository rather than a conventional tomb. Blood activates the entrance, separating Hadjar and Einen inside a sequence of trials. Apparitions of Hadjar's dead family and friends accuse him of failure and urge him to betray Einen, but he recognizes them as false and rejects their conclusions. He decides that his purpose must extend beyond revenge toward freedom and protection for those subject to arbitrary power. After briefly reuniting, Hadjar and Einen are separated again by a shifting maze. Hadjar escapes by studying when its barriers appear, then faces a bull-headed guardian who demands that he make it draw its sword within three attacks. Raw strength and his most powerful technique fail. The guardian instead forces Hadjar to confront the fear and revenge governing his life. Hadjar accepts fear without submitting to it and commits himself to a new foundation. When he asks the guardian to draw, it does, confirming his success. Hadjar continues the battle, kills the guardian, and leaves the trial under the identity North Wind, dedicated to freedom rather than vengeance.
Story so far - through chapter 98 (this book)
Hadjar reunites with Einen in a gravity-defying staircase maze where advancement requires defeating another challenger. They lure out an Eternal Mountain spearman and prepare explosives against the surrounding opportunists. Hadjar kills the spearman after their energy techniques disrupt the maze, but Tom attacks during the aftermath. Dora shields Einen and suffers a catastrophic chest wound. Before Hadjar can return to them, the repository pulls him into its final trial. The undead Emperor Decatur removes access to Hadjar's cultivation, soul, and sword powers, then offers safety if he abandons his path. Hadjar's concern for those he failed and for Einen leads him to reject an ordinary life. His will stops Decatur's descending sword, allowing him to pass. In a graveyard of immense swords, an ancient shadow offers its personal inheritance and reveals itself as the Black General. It explains that it is the First Darkhan, Hadjar's ancestor, and that its surviving self remains imprisoned elsewhere. When Hadjar resists, the ancestor threatens Dora's life. Hadjar accepts the inheritance under coercion while privately resolving to destroy the First Darkhan with the power it gives him.
Story so far - through chapter 102 (this book)
The First Darkhan's inheritance binds Hadjar to study its knowledge and prepares him as a possible future vessel. It grants him Flying Sword, the first Sword of Four Strikes. The repository's collapse reopens the demon gates, and Hadjar returns to find many challengers dead and Dora alive but critically wounded. Einen carries her as the survivors flee to the fort. A healer says only Dora's aunt can save her, but the demon horde attacks before the group can depart normally. Hadjar holds the infirmary entrance, cuts Dora's ship free so Einen and the others can escape with her, and stays behind to defend the fort. He spends nearly all his strength using Flying Sword against the invaders. Helmer then arrives as an emissary of the Demon Prince. He explains that the rebel demons violated their own laws by seeking the world's destruction, erases the horde with nightmares, and gives Hadjar the commander's core. Hadjar helps conceal the intervention. When three clan leaders later press an unidentified claim against him, a famed swordsman declares Hadjar his disciple and deters them. Hadjar leaves for a potentially lethal two-year course of training on Storm Mountain, while Dora's survival and his ancestral pact remain unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
Hadjar passes the repository's trials, but the First Darkhan forces him to accept an inheritance by threatening Dora. The pact grants Hadjar Flying Sword while obliging him to keep studying the ancestor's knowledge, and the ancestor intends to use him as a vessel. Hadjar plans to turn that power against its owner. Dora remains alive after shielding Einen from Tom's attack, but her chest wound is fatal without rapid treatment. Einen, Annis, the Dinos siblings, the giant cultivator, and other allies escape aboard Dora's ship to seek her aunt's aid. Hadjar stays behind at the fort and spends nearly all his strength resisting the demon horde released by the repository's collapse. Helmer intervenes as the Demon Prince's emissary, erases the invading army, and gives Hadjar the rebel commander's core. Hadjar helps hide Helmer's role. The demon gates remain a wider threat, while Helmer's debts, the divine interest in Hadjar, the Dead Moon contract, Derek's oath, Dora's survival, and the First Darkhan's plan all remain unresolved. A famed swordsman finally claims Hadjar as his disciple and takes him to Storm Mountain for two years of dangerous training.
