Hadjar carried a dragon heart and the Black Blade, but poison damage left him with only a few years to reach lord level and prevent the collapse of his soul. Orune took Hadjar as his disciple and brought him to Storm Mountain for severe training. Meanwhile, Einen gained prominence in imperial war games and remained committed to Dora despite the political barriers to their marriage. War with Laskan drew nearer, and the Tournament of the Twelve offered Hadjar a place among the empire's strongest young cultivators.

The imperial capital is crowded for the Tournament of the Twelve as recruitment and artificial cultivation accelerate ahead of war with Laskan. Hadjar instead fights alongside his Quetzal spirit and destroys the fragment's demonic heart. Mortally damaged, it warns him to distrust others and investigate the secret of his birth. Hadjar collapses after freeing the garden from its jailer.

Hadjar and the other survivors are recovered after the lake's destruction, but their dream wounds linger. Einen saw his dead mother, and two cultivators remain unable to wake. An inner confrontation reunites him with the abandoned part of himself represented by the Quetzal, and he emerges as a Spirit Knight known as the Knight of the North Wind. After the palace battle, Dora's aunt treats Hadjar and warns that the First Darkhan fragment has grown stronger, leaving him about four years. The treasure tower strips Hadjar of cultivation advantages and places him as a mortal captain in an ancient siege. After enduring grave wounds, he recognizes that the inner sword he forged for himself cannot be taken away. That realization lets him overcome an opponent shaped like his uncle and pass the personal trial. The keeper explains that Hadjar needs power rooted in himself because no imperial strengthening method can safely supplement his altered body. For the next trial, Hadjar must create music no one has heard. He reconnects with the music that sustained him in his former life, composes an original song, and passes.
