The fifth entry in the King's Dark Tidings series finds Rezkin recovering from a mysterious poisoning as he juggles the fallout of his growing web of alliances: a duplicated companion who must be recognized as two separate people, a friend's new relationship, and Gendishen's offer of its crown after its king's death. Determined to rescue his captured friend Tam from the Isle of Sand, Rezkin is instead forcibly diverted by nonhuman captors who identify him as a rare kind of powerful being, one whose ancestry and past bargains may commit him to a coming war against invading daemons. While Rezkin argues for his freedom before a wary council, Tam remains a prisoner elsewhere, enslaved and searching for any chance to escape.
