Rezkin (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A ruler opposing Asshai who awakens after a severe poisoning. He accepts Frisha and Tieran's relationship and remains intent on protecting his people despite the unidentified attack.

Frisha (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Rezkin's former intended partner, now openly involved with Tieran. She helps manage the crisis around Rezkin's poisoning and the appearance of two identical companions.

Tieran Nirius (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Frisha’s partner, who intends to marry her if she agrees. Rezkin accepts their relationship without resentment and wants both of them protected.

Wesson (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Rezkin's chosen king's mage, though still formally a journeyman. He seeks full standing and proposes entering Asshai to persuade former mage allies to abandon King Caydean.

Tamarin Blackwater (Supporting)

Also known as Tam

First appears in chapter 2

Rezkin's captive friend and trainee. His location and condition are unknown, and Rezkin is determined to retrieve him personally despite having only just recovered from poisoning.

Uthe (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 15

Tam's fellow quarry slave, bound to him by an enchanted neck-chain. He survives attacks beside Tam and questions whether the quarry stone truly acts under Tam's claimed protection.

Kai (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Rezkin's trusted striker and security leader. He is already known as a close protector before this volume begins.

Farson (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Rezkin's former trainer and a wary protector who keeps watch throughout the poisoning. He identifies himself as a striker even though Rezkin expects that he may eventually try to kill him.

Reaylin de Voss (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

A healer allied with Rezkin who prepares to join the expedition seeking Tam. Her skills make her part of the small party assembled for the rescue.

Peyton DeVos (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 22

Reaylin's father and the leader of the Asshaian rebels near Benbrick. With Caydean's army due within a day, he asks Wesson to unite the local mages behind the defense.

Prince Thresson (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The missing prince of Asshai, whose absence is part of the unresolved succession conflict at the start of the volume.

King Caydean (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The king of Asshai and an established threat to Rezkin's people. Opposition to his rule shapes the conflict already under way when this volume begins.

Equestrius (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 23

Wesson's former master. He publicly supports Wesson's judgment and ability when the gathered mages of Benbrick must choose their leader before the royal attack.

Alantra Doon (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 23

A journeyman and natural battle mage among the gathered mages at Benbrick. She joins Wesson with most of the local faction, although her brother remains with the opposing royal force.

Battle Master Rhone (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 23

A battle mage with an opposing royal force. Alantra Doon’s brother remains aligned with him.

the Sen (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 13

An Asshaian operative reported to be directing the siege of Gage. His force seeks a weapon inside the city while mages prepare marked vessels under his control.

the spirit leader (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

The local authority assigned to observe Rezkin while a hidden council assesses whether his power makes him dangerous. He becomes Rezkin's custodian and explains the history of human-born spiritua.

the spirit general (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

A hidden people’s military commander who regards Rezkin with suspicion. She believes his lack of strength could postpone the madness expected of him.

the bonded wolf-shifter (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 21

The wolf-shifting daughter of the leopard leaders. Rezkin saves her from lethal venom, accidentally creating a bond that he alters so she can live independently and regard him as a friend.

the great wolf (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 21

An ancient pointed-eared person who permanently chose a wolf's form. He agrees to oppose the demons and directs Rezkin's party toward the lion tribe and the missing elder they seek.

the captive lion leader (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 21

An ancient pointed-eared figure leading the lion tribe. He admits murdering lion children born in other forms and blaming rival tribes to manufacture a war, after which his own people take him into custody.
