In short (whole book)
After sealing a portal created by a hostile organization, Kazimir Wolfe and his allies discover that a wyvern, a young dragon, and a speaking Nether feline crossed into this world. The wyvern dies in a road collision, while the group follows the dragon to a later search region amid public sightings, enemy attacks, and the arrival of a time-displaced assassin. Kazimir develops new control over chaotic energy and devises a false portal signal to lure the dragon. With Macarius and Duke, he captures it alive and opens a real portal to return it to the Nether. An elder Nether god then takes control of Kazimir and tries to enter through the opening. Kazimir knocks himself unconscious to close the portal. Injured but convinced that the Convergence is real, he resolves to lead an offensive against the hostile organization, while Azib and the Nether feline choose to remain with his group.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Kazimir Wolfe's guardian raised him and introduced him to minor magical practices before armed attackers killed her. Her death became one of Kazimir's reasons for opposing a hostile organization, but her true relationship to him and her role in the deaths of his parents remained unresolved. An ancient wizard spirit was drawn to Kazimir in order to train him. Instead of arriving alone, the spirit became bound to Duke's body and could not be separated from the dog. It remained a distinct presence, while Duke gained speech and unusual understanding without losing his own identity or ordinary canine nature. The spirit's earlier relationship with the jinn Azib was also unresolved.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Kazimir is left temporarily blind and dangerously depleted after sealing the portal. Mike extracts him, Duke, an injured agent, Macarius, and Giselle, but police and a hostile organization are searching the area. Kazimir remains because at least one dragon escaped. Tracks soon establish that both a young dragon and a wyvern crossed from the Nether. A third trail leads to an intelligent, three-toed feline trapped in the woods. Kazimir rescues him, and the feline makes a binding pledge to protect Kazimir's household when able. The creatures scatter while the injured party hides in a motel. Azib explains that fragments of the hostile organization's ritual bowl may retain chaotic energy capable of tracing them. Police have collected the fragments, so Kazimir considers asking a federal contact for covert access. The feline then develops a severe fever caused by dark energy in his injured leg. Kazimir extracts the energy at considerable risk and saves him, adding a further life debt between them. The federal contact agrees to try arranging private contact with the evidence. Meanwhile, a trail camera records a winged creature attacking a deer decoy, and the video begins spreading online despite being dismissed as a fake.
Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)
With help from the federal contact, Kazimir enters police custody under a cover identity and transfers the shattered bowl's remaining energy into a cast-iron pot. Its pulses give the party rough headings for the dragon and wyvern, but the power is fading. A separate report leads the injured agent, Macarius, and Giselle toward an armed man who appears displaced from the year 519. One winged Nether creature is then killed in a truck collision and dissolves, leaving little evidence behind. The stranger uses magic to draw Kazimir's team into the forest. He claims to seek a wizard and pretends to offer service, then tries to assassinate Kazimir. Duke, Giselle, and Macarius stop him. The captive declares support for a Convergence and the return of old gods before killing himself. Two incoming reinforcement agents are ambushed and killed, and a compromised message exposes Kazimir and the injured agent to another attack. Mike finally identifies their allied network and its long-standing enemy. The survivors continue east. Their last magical scans place the remaining dragon in a northern lake region, but the pot's tracking energy is exhausted. They establish a rental house and prepare to search by conventional means. The Nether feline chooses to stay with Kazimir and opposes a Convergence that would threaten both worlds.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
Thermal drones prove unreliable because Nether creatures may produce little infrared signal. A blurry public video nevertheless confirms that the young dragon is alive in the search region, while the remote leader releases convincing false footage to weaken belief in the real sighting. The dead creature from the earlier collision is therefore identified as the wyvern. At the dragon's latest location, Kazimir learns that he can compress and trigger the chaotic residue attached to it, suggesting a close-range way to disable it. The dragon ranges too widely for the team's search grid. Two civilian investigators join the growing public hunt, bringing recovered residue, film cameras, and other equipment that could expose the truth. The hostile organization has also exploited allied communications, and the federal contact's inquiry links the attack on the reinforcement agents to hired criminals while leaving their employer unknown. Kazimir studies the failed Convergence expected by the assassin from 519, but his theory that an earlier wizard prevented it remains unproved. Macarius and Giselle then explain why protectors were sent through time: wizards and their defenders were being hunted, so future wizards near a Convergence were expected to need help. They were told to find the wizard most in need, not given Kazimir's identity or era. Kazimir concludes that the enemy's archives may contain the answers his group lacks.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
Repeated drone searches fail as public interest in the dragon grows. Giselle argues that the creature is a displaced animal rather than inherently evil, and Kazimir develops a plan to attract it with magic instead of ordinary bait. Azib believes a false portal signal could tempt a dragon seeking a route home, though such a lure could also expose Kazimir to the hostile organization. The remote leader approves a diversion rather than a direct attack on enemy personnel. Kazimir's control expands while he treats lingering injuries in the Nether feline. He eases distorted energy in the feline's body, calms his mind, and places him into sleep. The group selects an isolated, screened field for the dragon encounter. The remote leader fabricates a sighting at a diversion site to draw civilian pursuers and enemy units away, while Mike acquires a powerful rifle as a last resort. The preferred plan is for Kazimir to disrupt the chaotic energy clinging to the dragon and then calm it before the agents shoot. At a remote wildlife refuge, Kazimir learns to reproduce portal-like energy strongly enough for Azib to detect. The effort exhausts him, but the test succeeds. With the deception attracting several enemy teams, the allied network obtains a box truck and commits to the operation that night before worsening weather or fading interest ends the diversion.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
Kazimir emits the false portal signal in the isolated field while Mike and the injured agent take firing positions. The magic intensifies the cold and fog, destroying visibility and forcing Mike to cancel the planned shot. The dragon advances through the cover and attacks Kazimir. He shocks its chaotic residue, and Macarius and Duke keep it from flying until Macarius renders it unconscious. Kazimir then places it into a magical sleep, allowing the group to secure it alive in the box truck. They transport the dragon to the former portal site while Kazimir sustains the sleep. The Nether feline explains that he fled a devastated Nether but remains because he expects Kazimir's future help for his people. He and Azib both decline an offer to return. Despite uncertain alignment, Kazimir opens a portal, and the team drives the awakened, reluctant dragon through it. As the passage closes, an elder Nether god takes control of Kazimir and forces him to keep it open. Kazimir repeatedly strikes his own head against the truck until unconsciousness breaks the control and closes the portal. The dragon is back in the Nether and Kazimir survives, injured. The encounter confirms the Convergence as an existential threat. He resolves to lead an offensive against the hostile organization while his companions remain together and the motives of their Nether allies remain open.
How does it end? (ending)
Kazimir's false portal signal draws the young dragon to an isolated field, but the same magic intensifies the cold and fog, ruining the planned rifle attack. Kazimir shocks the chaotic energy clinging to the creature, Macarius and Duke stop it from escaping, and Kazimir places it into a magical sleep. The party transports it to the former breach, where Kazimir opens a portal and sends the awakened dragon back to the Nether alive. An elder Nether god seizes Kazimir's will and forces him to hold the portal open. Kazimir breaks the control by injuring himself until he loses consciousness, closing the passage before the god can enter. The escaped-creature crisis is resolved, but traces of both animals remain vulnerable to public discovery. Kazimir survives with a likely concussion and accepts the Convergence as a world-level threat. Duke, Mike, the injured agent, Macarius, and Giselle remain with him. Azib and the Nether feline decline the chance to return to the Nether, while the remote leader's allied network and the federal contact remain allies under continuing security pressure. Kazimir intends to strike the hostile organization, whose magical archives, compromised operations, and wider plans remain unresolved.
