In short (whole book)
After destroying the Tower of Blight, Hal and his companions are displaced through the Fathomways into the Dunes of Midnight while Val impersonates him to protect Brightsong from the twelve tribes. Hal becomes the unwilling leader of a ruined Adventurers Guild and turns it into a challenge to the desert city's guild monopolies. His allies clear its debt and hall, win territory, ally with the Lamplighters, and secure an exclusive dark-steel supply. Hal masters Anvil Lightning, but its power worsens the strain that threatens his self-control without Besal. A staged storehouse raid and false guildhall fire draw the Merchant Guild into an ambush. Hal kills the attacking house scion, and the surviving Adventurers Guild rises to C grade with restored access to runic keys and dungeons. Hal remains far from Brightsong, Val's tribal trials continue, Besal pursues a covert spire operation, and the absent mistress has yet to respond.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Hal became the leader of Brightsong and gathered companions including Noth, Mira, Ashera, Elora, and Vorax. Their struggle against the Tower of Blight ended with the tower destroyed and Brightsong freed, but the victory left the tower-clearing party missing. Val, another Beastborn and former Kinslayer, remained behind with the settlement's defenders. Hal's inner counterpart Besal had also become separated from him. Brightsong now faces the consequences of its survival without many of its strongest protectors.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
The mistress leaves her desert city for a Trinic gathering, entrusting its surveillance regime to fearful servants. In Brightsong, twelve Shiverglades tribes arrive and demand Hal, but he and the tower-clearing party are missing. Val is disguised as Hal so the settlement can negotiate from an appearance of strength. Hal, Noth, Mira, Ashera, Elora, Vorax, a restored dwarf, and a brewmaster have been carried into the Fathomways and cannot find a route home. While resting at a Memoria Crystal, Hal chooses Magus Eternal and then receives Azure Balance, a path designed for a Beastborn who no longer has a Keros. The change consolidates his magic into stronger Beast Magic and gives him tools to contain and purge strain. Hal also realizes that he, Val, and Rinbast are divergent versions drawn from different Earth timelines. With the party provisioned and his advancement complete, he prepares to explore the hostile passages.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
Hal guides the party through the shifting Fathomways while security constructs accumulate dangerous breach marks against them. Vorax helps map a construct's field of vision, and Mira exhausts herself carrying the group through its blind area. The passages continually redirect them toward greater danger, leaving the wounded party unable to retreat or rest. When supernatural Soul Pressure puts nearly everyone to sleep, Hal resists long enough to burn his companions awake and transfer his own health through their shared connection. The party flees a mounting security response. Ashera and the restored dwarf hold a narrow approach while the others reach a chamber containing a raised pool. Ashera enters first and opens an exit. The group escapes the Fathomways, but the portal leaves them in a hot desert of black sand with a distant walled city as their only obvious refuge.
Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)
The party identifies the desert as the Dunes of Midnight, far northeast of the Shiverglades. Returning overland could take more than a year, so Hal needs higher resistance to Soul Pressure and a Memoria Crystal connected to Brightsong. He disguises his brown Founder eyes and enters the nearby city, whose golden constructs watch the streets for its absent mistress. The local Adventurers Guild is dilapidated and politically disfavored. A deputy uses Hal's qualifications and the city's ban on female guild leaders to make him leader through a one-entry lottery, despite his refusal. In Brightsong, Hermes and Ashera's soul-aider seek a fragment of Ashera's soul with help from an ice dragon. Val continues posing as Hal while the tribes test Brightsong. Her disguise remains vulnerable to magical scrutiny, but she accepts responsibility for the settlement's judgment and defeats the Fangcallers in a prolonged drinking challenge, improving Brightsong's standing.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
Hal learns that his new guild branch has no contracts, little money, a large overdue loan, and members who helped sabotage its former leader. His party pools its portable sparks to clear the debt, and Hal invests the remainder to raise the hall to level five. The building is still infested, and the branch needs genuine members, allies, and standing. Hal decides to rebuild relationships with the Artificers, Smiths, and Alchemists before forcing stronger guilds to recognize the Adventurers Guild. Meanwhile, Besal fights in an underground qualifying arena under a drow trainer and senses Hal nearby. Mira reveals that she is a Magi assigned to investigate Aldim's weakening World Shard and believes Hal's fusion quests may offer a remedy. The harple deputy chooses to remain and gathers intelligence for Hal's campaign. A representative of a powerful mercantile house then approaches her about exploiting the mistress's absence, invoking her concealed identity and a past episode of city-wide bloodshed.
Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)
Mutated vermin erupt from the guildhall walls, but Hal's party clears the infestation and repairs the damaged building. When a Thief's Guild mole draws Hal and Noth into a rooftop trap, Hal disables the attackers, binds a survivor by oath, and destroys a nearby lookout. The strike raises the Adventurers Guild to F grade and makes its return publicly credible. Hal distributes part of the captured wealth to allies and prepares a broader campaign against rival outposts. The mistress's oracle learns that her foresight cannot see the disruption around Hal's guild. Her youngest sister volunteers to watch it while secretly intending to help rebels exploit that blindness. Separately, Ashera's soul-aider and Hermes enter a nightmare dungeon formed around Ashera's trauma. They comfort her fragmented counterpart, break its bindings, and release a cleansed soul fragment with a possible alternative class crystal. The fragment reaches Ashera, but accepting its path would require her to sacrifice an existing class, so she postpones the decision.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
Hal accepts a local trickster-hunter-gambler as a conditional associate and confronts the Assassins Guild station in his territory. When its leader orders an attack, Hal and his companions disable the assassins without killing them and expel the station. Golden Guardians then surround the group, but Hal destroys them and Besal secretly eliminates the remaining observer. Besal's own team is using tournament bouts and a young oracle's dead-fate zones as cover while its drow handler seeks access to the city spire. Hal next negotiates with the Lamplighters rather than attacking them. Their elderly guildmaster explains that the Merchant's Guild controls their charter and stockpiled runic keys, giving it power over dungeon access. The Lamplighters reclaim their charter and ally with Hal, agreeing to make new keys for the Adventurers Guild. Other teams finish the territorial campaign, giving Hal's guild dominant surface control in its districts. Hal reaches base level one hundred and receives a mastery point.
Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)
Hal delays choosing his mastery while the Adventurers Guild adds allies, storage, and a summoned service helper. Mira reveals that she won the Gambler's Guild Imperium in a wager and therefore has the power to dissolve that guild. She keeps it, preferring leverage that protects ordinary workers and gives Hal access to appraisal and sales contacts. Free member storage also provides a direct alternative to expensive Merchant's Guild services. Hal concludes that the Merchants' reserve of short-lived runic keys preserves their dungeon monopoly even after the Lamplighters reclaim their charter. He plans to destroy the stockpile without stealing merchandise, expecting the loss to provoke an attack strong enough to advance his guild. Hermes is assigned a central infiltration role. Before the operation, Hal finally spends his mastery point on Anvil Lightning. The transformation releases uncontrolled golden lightning through the hall and leaves him unconscious.
Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)
Val remains in Brightsong, exhausted but still defeating tribal challenges in Hal's guise. In Merkmire, the tiefling assassin advances his campaign against corrupt elites, kills a power broker who abused coblins, and forces captives to reveal a secret route toward the city's highest political seat. Hal awakens from his mastery transformation with a greatly expanded Anvil Lightning spell linked to an ancient off-world lineage. The power can lower magical resistance and combine with several parts of his magic, but it also changes his body visibly and threatens to expose his hidden Founder identity. Hermes evolves into a Sparkbringer able to strengthen Hal's lightning and monster-core abilities. Hal regains part of an electrical shaping power and can form limbs from lightning. These gains make him far more dangerous, but he must learn control before the storehouse operation and continue hiding what he is from city residents who regard Founders as a threat.
Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)
Hal leaves the city in disguise to test Anvil Lightning and answer a contract from an oasis settlement dependent on dark-steel mining. He promises free protection from future monster threats in exchange for priority access to ore at ten percent above extraction cost. The mine contains a large infestation rather than the single creature reported. Hal limits his attacks to preserve the structure, while Hermes absorbs a full Anvil Lightning strike and channels it into precise bolts that eliminate the remaining creatures. Hermes collapses afterward but survives. Hal kills the last alpha when it attacks the settlement, completing the contract with most of the mine intact. The mayor grants the Adventurers Guild an exclusive dark-steel supply agreement. Hal gives his reward sparks back to the settlement to restart its operations, chooses new leadership and intimidation abilities, and heads toward the city as a severe storm gathers, intending to rejoin the planned strike on the Merchant's Guild.
Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)
Under cover of the storm, Hal, Noth, Mira, Ashera, and a small companion infiltrate the Merchant's Guild storehouse without the missing harple informant. Hal destroys every key detected there, including a unique gateway key that might have offered a route home, because keeping it would endanger his guild. On returning, the group finds the Adventurers Guildhall apparently burning and a Merchant force waiting with the informant. The raid was bait inside Hal's counter-plan: the stockpiled Lamplighter keys were illusions, but the separate deep-gateway key was real and Hal destroyed it. The informant only feigned betrayal to free the former guild leader, and the hall fire concealed a reinforced defense and rapid repairs. The informant disables the attacking house scion's protection. Hal kills him and the surrounding attackers with Anvil Lightning, then nearly continues his assault until Noth, Vorax, and another companion restore his control. The victory raises the Adventurers Guild from F grade to C grade and gives it access to the Lamplighters' real keys. The former leader rejoins, but Hal stays in command. His party survives, yet remains far from Brightsong while Val, Besal, and the absent mistress's unresolved conflicts continue.
How does it end? (ending)
Hal's party and the Adventurers Guild survive the Merchant Guild counterattack. The apparent destruction of the guildhall is a planned deception: Elora, the guild service helper, and the small companion protect and repair the courtyard while the fire hides their work. The harple informant only pretends to betray Hal, using the operation to free the former leader before disabling the attacking house scion's protection. Hal kills the scion and the surrounding force with Anvil Lightning, then nearly loses himself to rage until Noth, Vorax, and another companion restrain him. The victory raises the guild from F grade to C grade and restores access to the Lamplighters' runic keys, dungeons, ruins, and towers. The former leader rejoins, but Hal remains guild leader. Mira, Ashera, Elora, Hermes, and the rest of Hal's group survive. The guild also holds an exclusive dark-steel agreement with an oasis settlement. Hal still has no safe route to Brightsong, where Val continues facing the tribes. Besal's concealed spire mission, Ashera's class decision, the mistress's return, and retaliation from the Merchant Guild and great houses remain unresolved.
