Dust World recap

Economic collapse sends James McGill back to Legion Varus, which is dispatched to a lost human colony in Zeta Herculis. Cephalopods seize and doom Corvus, stranding the legion on Dust World amid hostile Hydra colonists and a slaving army. McGill repeatedly crosses the human divide, helping restore revival capacity and forge the alliance that defeats the invaders and captures their ship. Varus then plans to destroy Hydra before a Galactic inspection, so McGill warns the colonists and triggers a new conflict. The Nairbs halt the fighting and initially order mass execution, but Dust World's pre-treaty settlement and nanotechnology establish humanity as a two-world, level-two civilization. Hydra keeps the captured ship, humanity becomes a regional imperial enforcer, and Varus exterminates the cephalopod homeworld. McGill returns to Earth with Natasha Elkin and rejects Della's attempt at reconciliation.

Previously: James McGill served as a legionnaire in Legion Varus and took part in the classified Steel World operation. He believed the Saurians involved in that campaign had intended to undermine Earth regardless of the legion's actions, but he remained unable to discuss the mission openly. Military service repeatedly cost McGill his life, and revival technology returned him in replacement bodies. By the beginning of his next shore leave, he counted his current body as his fourth. His survival had also placed him at odds with his commanders. Turov had previously ordered his execution, yet an unauthorized revival brought him back afterward. McGill's earlier Galactic encounters included Inspector Xlur, whom he had killed twice. Carlos and Centurion Graves were already part of McGill's Legion Varus service, while Corvus was an established ship in his military life. These prior campaigns left McGill tied to a legion whose missions, command disputes, and revival system continued to shape his circumstances.

James McGill finds civilian life intolerable just as the loss of Earth's alien contracts causes an economic crisis and turns public anger against Legion Varus. He returns to the legion and learns that it has a secret mission to expand Earth's territory. After harsh screening, Varus boards Corvus for Zeta Herculis. The long-lost Hydra Project established a human colony there, and the legion has orders to help the settlers while preventing them from becoming a rival mercenary power. McGill is reassigned as a heavy-armor weaponier and trained by Sargon. Near the destination, unknown scaled and tentacled attackers seize Corvus's bridge, kill its Skrull crew, and disrupt the ship. Centurion Graves organizes a counterattack. McGill and Sargon use heavy plasma weapons to defeat the first boarding group, while Natasha Elkin determines that the creatures' outer covering is simple protective gear. The attackers' identity, numbers, and connection to the missing colonists remain unknown. Varus reaches a vacuum-sealed bridge bulkhead and prepares to breach it.

Varus fights through Corvus's breached bridge and restores communications, but discovers that the attackers have deliberately sabotaged navigation. The ship is falling toward Zeta Herculis and cannot be saved. The legion abandons it in lifters and lands in scattered valleys on the system's dry habitable planet. McGill's cohort reaches a volcanic crater with breathable air, a lake, and hazardous but edible wildlife. An armed human sighting leads to the Hydra descendants, who live underground and use advanced nanite weapons. They mistake the legionnaires for creations of their cephalopod enemies. During McGill's attempt at peaceful contact, Stott shoots him with a nanite bolt and Della kills his failing body. Revived at the lifter, McGill convinces command that the colonists built their defenses against the cephalopods rather than Varus. Turov pauses the immediate assault but continues to regard the colony as a possible political danger. Corvus is destroyed with its remaining crew. Before its loss, it detects a large ship leaving the water world for Dust World. Natasha also reveals a gap in her recorded memories, leaving open the possibility that another version of her escaped Corvus.

An ultimatum fails to reconcile Varus and Hydra. The colonists seize the cohort's lifter and damage its revival system, killing its bio staff. McGill and Natasha improvise a reconstruction of Anne Grant, who restores the machine and revives dozens of casualties. A huge vessel then lands by the crater lake. Della identifies its forces as recurring abductors, including giant soldiers bred in groups and controlled by cephalopods. She and McGill arrange a temporary nonaggression pact, though neither human faction trusts the other. After McGill attacks an enemy surveillance craft, the invaders turn on the legion. Their giant troops inflict heavy losses, and the cephalopods deploy a shield and turret that destroy the lifter. The revival unit survives because it had been moved. Leeson sends McGill, Carlos, Kivi, and Hudson to reconnoiter the shielded ship. Tall humanoid trackers capture all four with electrified nets. McGill escapes his restraints and kills Carlos and Kivi so their confirmed deaths can be reversed through revival, but he cannot reach Hudson. McGill dies during the attempt, while Hudson is taken aboard alive and therefore cannot yet be legally reconstructed.

McGill, Carlos, and Kivi are revived, though Carlos resents McGill's decision during their capture. Della secretly brings McGill to Hydra's leader, the investigator. McGill learns that the colony survives inside its dismantled original ship, concealed within a cliff. He proposes cooperation against the slavers, and the investigator seeks formal contact with Varus. Della and McGill become intimate, rupturing McGill's renewed relationship with Kivi. A slaver penetrates Hydra's tunnels and threatens to expose the refuge, pushing both human groups toward action. Varus attacks the enemy ground force and destroys its bred soldiers at severe cost. Stott, who once survived captivity aboard the alien vessel, guides McGill's team through the tunnels to an exit near the ship before being recaptured. The legion enlarges the route and emerges inside the vessel's force dome. A slaver delegation demands surrender. Centurion Graves refuses, is struck down, and dies after McGill kills the slaver leader. Leeson then fires on one of three enormous shielded giants, ending the standoff and beginning open battle around the ship.

Varus repels the alien ground assault, but the enemy destroys the medical bunker and the legion's local revival machine. Leeson leads the survivors into the grounded ship, where hostile nanites force an initial withdrawal. Scout Alders brings Hydra fighters whose nanites neutralize the ship's defenses, allowing a joint advance. The force finds the captive colonists and Hudson, who has been severely tortured. Leeson kills Hudson to end his suffering and permit later reconstruction. Despite orders to wait, Leeson presses the bridge assault and eliminates the remaining cephalopods before they can escape. A revived Graves supports the result. The investigator claims the captured vessel for Hydra but provisionally agrees to share it with Varus. The victory immediately creates a greater danger. A Nairb inspection ship arrives, and Tribune Drusus warns that the unauthorized human settlement and captured alien vessel could bring extermination. Drusus, Turov, and Graves decide to destroy the ship and kill the colonists before the inspectors arrive. McGill overhears their plan and flees into the tunnels to warn Hydra, breaking openly with his command.

McGill reaches Hydra and warns the investigator. The colonists refuse evacuation, retake the cephalopod ship, and kill pursuing Varus personnel whose identities McGill records for revival. Della kills McGill when he tries to return to the legion. Anne Grant revives and briefly conceals him, while Graves spares him from permanent execution and demotes him. The arriving Nairbs halt the renewed human battle and investigate both factions. McGill persuades the investigator to communicate, but his testimony exposes Hydra's Earth origin and adds charges of illegal colonization. The Nairbs initially order every legionnaire and colonist to undergo permanent self-execution. McGill identifies Dust World as humanity's second populated planet, and Turov establishes that its settlement predates Earth's imperial treaty. The ruling changes: humanity qualifies as a level-two civilization but must supply a second trade good and accept regional enforcement duties. Dust World's nanotechnology satisfies the trade requirement. Tribune Drusus gives the captured ship to Hydra, and Varus helps the colonists operate it. Varus then exterminates the cephalopod homeworld as an imperial penalty. McGill returns to a prosperous Earth with Natasha, while Della remains with Hydra and her apology does not restore their relationship.

The Nairb hearing accepts that Dust World was settled before Earth's treaty with the Galactic Empire. Its human population and nanotechnology give humanity a second world and a second trade good, raising it to level-two status and preventing the ordered permanent deaths of Legion Varus and the colonists. Tribune Drusus accepts regional enforcement duties because the usual imperial fleet is unavailable. He recognizes Hydra's ownership of the captured cephalopod ship, and Varus technicians begin teaching the colonists to operate it. Under its first enforcement obligation, Varus destroys the cephalopods' homeworld in punishment for their attack on an imperial vessel. James McGill survives and returns to a rapidly recovering Earth, where he and Natasha Elkin resume their relationship. Della remains with Hydra, and McGill refuses to renew their connection after her apology. Graves, Turov, Drusus, Carlos, and the colonists remain active under the new order. Hydra is secure for now but distinct from Earth, while humanity must police its region amid signs that the imperial core and Battle Fleet 921 are under strain.
