A young street thief from the west of Roshar, sharp-tongued, funny, and endlessly hungry, who has gained the powers of an Edgedancer, one of the reborn orders of Knights Radiant. She can make her body impossibly slick and can sense and touch the awareness of living things. Fiercely independent and allergic to responsibility, she once begged a mysterious old power to let her stay a child, and she hides a deep loneliness behind her jokes.

The spren bonded to Lift, a being of the growing world who manifests as trailing vines and crystal and who would much rather be a quiet gardener than an adventurer's companion. Fussy, anxious, and unfailingly polite, he despairs at Lift's recklessness even as he is devoted to her.

A cold, precise immortal, one of the ancient Heralds, who has appointed himself an executioner of newly emerging Knights Radiant. Utterly devoted to law and to a grim logic, he believes that killing nascent Radiants will hold back the return of the world's great catastrophe, and he pursues that purpose without mercy or apparent feeling.

A young man whom Lift once saved from Nale and who has since risen, improbably, to the highest office of the Azish empire. Fond of Lift and grateful to her, he tries to give her a home and a purpose, which she resists on principle.

First appears in chapter 15

A conscientious city watch captain in the Azish city where much of the story unfolds, a by-the-book officer trying to keep order and do right by the people under her authority as strange and dangerous events disrupt her district.
