Lift, a young thief who has quietly become an Edgedancer, one of the reborn Knights Radiant, travels east to an Azish city in search of good food and an aimless kind of freedom. There she learns that the immortal executioner Nale, who hunts and kills emerging Radiants to hold back the world's coming catastrophe, is stalking the city for his next victim. Rather than flee, Lift decides to find and shield the person Nale is hunting. Using her powers and her stubborn compassion, she interferes with his hunt and finally confronts him directly, pointing out that the very disaster he kills to prevent has already begun, making his crusade pointless. Shaken, Nale relents. In the course of protecting the vulnerable and forcing herself to care, Lift speaks a deeper oath of her order and grows into her calling, accepting that she cannot stay a heedless child forever. She leaves resolved to seek out the growing company of Radiants gathering to face the true enemy.

Before this story: On the world of Roshar, an ancient enemy has returned, and a second, unnatural storm has begun circling the globe, awakening old powers and reviving the long-lost Knights Radiant. Among these new Radiants is Lift, a young orphan and street thief from the far west. Some time earlier she sought out a mysterious old power in the wilderness and made a strange wish connected to not growing up, and in the aftermath she found herself bonded to a spren and able to wield the abilities of an Edgedancer. In her wanderings she once crossed paths with a lethal immortal who hunts new Radiants, and she saved a young man from him who has since risen to rule the Azish empire and who would gladly give her a home. Uneasy with responsibility and more interested in her next meal than her destiny, Lift keeps moving, drifting eastward and dodging the calling that keeps catching up with her.

Lift makes her way to a large Azish city, drawn by rumors of remarkable food and by her habit of never staying still. Traveling with her put-upon spren, Wyndle, she slips into the city and its underclass with a thief's ease. There she picks up word that the cold immortal executioner who preys on emerging Knights Radiant has come to the city, searching for someone with newly awakened powers to kill. Recognizing the danger, and unable to simply walk away from a person she has never met, Lift sets herself the task of finding Nale's intended victim first. She begins working the streets and markets for clues, testing her slick, quick abilities against the city's dangers while trying to stay ahead of a hunter far older and more powerful than she is.

Lift's search draws her into direct conflict with the Herald Nale as she works to shield the vulnerable from his lethal justice. Forcing herself to care for people she would rather ignore, she grows into the oaths of her order and speaks a deeper Ideal, coming more fully into her Edgedancer powers with Wyndle beside her. In the decisive confrontation she stands against Nale and dismantles the reasoning behind his crusade, reminding him that the catastrophe he kills to forestall has already arrived, so his executions accomplish nothing. The rigid immortal wavers and withdraws, his purpose undone. Having chosen to protect the overlooked rather than to run, Lift sheds a little of her fear of growing up and accepts that she has a role to play. She sets out to find the Knights Radiant now gathering to face the returned enemy.

Lift succeeds in thwarting the Herald Nale's hunt. After maneuvering through the city and protecting those he would kill, she confronts him and argues that his logic has collapsed: the great storm marking the return of the ancient enemy has already come, so slaughtering fledgling Radiants can no longer delay anything. Faced with this, the rigid immortal falters and withdraws, his grim purpose broken. In choosing to listen to and defend the overlooked and the helpless, Lift speaks a further Ideal of the Edgedancers and comes more fully into her power, with her spren Wyndle at her side. She sheds a little of her insistence on staying a careless child and accepts, on her own terms, that she has a part to play. The novella closes with Lift deciding to make her way toward the gathering Knights Radiant and the war taking shape against the returned enemy, no longer running from who she is becoming.
